Summary: The world in which Darth Vader lives is silent.
A/U: I was 'putting my thoughts to paper' when one of the lines struck me- and thus a Vader sketch is born.

Remember to review =)

The world in which Darth Vader lives is silent.

He remembers a time when he could hear things- living things all around him, vibrating with existence. The gentle beat of small wings, the steady pulse of a heart... the pleasant hum of a galaxy at peace.

He can't hear that now. He's unsure exactly when it began to dim, as it happened in the transitional stages of his life.

As a child when he was racing it was most apparent. The sandy dunes of Tatooine, the deadest of planets, reverberated with waves of this power like a an echoing song.

In the Jedi temple it was strongest. It energized him, giving him strength when there was none, holding him together when he about to break and taking the pain away.

When he was alone he was most in tune. He could hear everything. Without distraction the whole galaxy seemed to be within his reach. Innumerable lives harmonised in a grand symphony, and for a moment everything would melt into the melody.

It was only a whisper when Order 66 was executed. It was all but gone on Mustafar.

He had yet to hear it in his bionic hell.

The din was his only companion for so many years; first as a slave, then a padawan, and later a knight. It was there when no one else would listen. It held him close as he clung to the fleeting shreds of sanity after a vision. It warmed his heart in moments of dread and fear. It dried the tears he desperately tried to restrain, keeping him afloat in a sea of despair.

It was his one constant in life.

He knew it was still there. He still received the subtle warnings of danger, the fleeting touch of the few force-sensitives that had not been annihilated, the last cries of a life before being snuffed out... but the placating white noise was gone. The soft whispers of love, the nonsensical words of comfort... all gone. Quiet.

And he finds he misses it.
