So odd ._. Oh well. The story is simple: Mai is going out with Malik for one reason. He carves their initials in the wood on a bench at the park. This is onesided Malik/Mai, though they are going out. It's supposed to be Marik/Mai for Compy's contest, and there's some of that too. Onesided or both ways, well, you can decided. This could be AU or AT or cannon. It's rather vague! I hope some one likes it more than I do.

DISCALIMER: Imagine what it would be like if I owned Yu-Gi-Oh. Too bad I don't.

It was carved in wood, just like all of the others. Simple. Average.

Everything their love was not.

-

"Why carve it?" she asked him.

"Why not?"

-

To the outside world, the two were the perfect couple. Both attractive, both successful. The wild, passionate young man with the witty tongue and the bold beauty with the teasing streak.

Made for each other.

And yet they couldn't be more wrong.

-

He said bluntly, emotionlessly, "I know why you said yes."

"What?" she asked, playing innocent.

"It wasn't for me." Not a question. "It was only for him."

Only a short pause filled the air before, "Yes."

-

He loved her confidence.

She hated his smirk.

He hated her heart.

She loved his other.

-

"I don't get it," the blonde lady insisted as he carved the initials in.

Just a glance is all she received.

"You know the truth. Why?"

"I'm giving you what you want."

-

To any bystander, they were a normal pair. Just sitting and walking, arguing and laughing. Two sweethearts madly in love.

And yet they never saw the deep secret. Never saw what was below the surface.

-

It wasn't the boy. She knew it wasn't. "Hello, my dear."

Shivers went up her spine.

"I'm what you wanted, no?"

Again, she stayed quiet.

"Afraid?" he chuckled.

She almost laughed with him.

It was the one thing she was not.

-

No one saw the change between light and dark. No one knew. They kept it hidden. To the world, they were smitten. Inside, they were torn between what was right and wrong.

But the boy wanted his unrequited love happy.

She was too blind to see.

The other played along, toying with her, making her fall deeper in, almost as if only to torture the boy.

He was powerless to stop it.

She caved so willingly into his words, his touches, his smirk.

The other knew this well.

-

This day, it was the innocent boy.

She asked, "Why are you here?" Her gaze drifted to the carving next to them.

"To say goodbye."

She gasped in horror. "Goodbye?"

"Don't worry. He will stay." His eyes betrayed no emotion. His beautiful violet eyes had dulled noticeably only to her.

"Oh." She didn't mask the relief in her voice. He knew her too well. "But why?"

He looked her right in the eyes. "You've chosen him." The boy felt no need to sugarcoat it. She never did.

The girl wanted to feel sorry. She wanted to feel pity. She wanted to love him.

And yet she couldn't.

She felt nothing at all.

With that, he faded away without a fight, and the other was back.

"My dear," he purred, smile victorious.

-

Lies were carved in that wood.

To most people that saw the initials would think of a happy couple head over heels for each other. They had no idea. No idea at all...

-

The young man didn't warn her about what would come. The agony she would endure. The horrific nightmare, a living Hell. She didn't know that she was playing a dangerous game. One she was destined to lose. "You made your choice, Mai."

She would never hear him.

"You are at his mercy now."

I hope it wasn't too confusing. You can ask if you want. I'll try to answer the best I can. Comments and criticism are greatly appreciated.
