Her eyes had shimmered like amethysts in the dim twilight of the early evening.
"Do you realize why you are being punished?"
His brown eyes were lifeless as he watched a drop of his own blood run down the bridge of his nose.
Red like the passion they shared.
He felt a slap across his face but couldn't find it in himself to react, his dead eyes meeting the white wings of his back.
White like the vow I once took.
"You are being punished for succumbing to sin, Kurosaki Ichigo." He watched impassively as his white feathers turned pitch-black.
Black like my soul.
"You shall remain in limbo until you repent."
In a flurry of black feathers he disappeared from sight, his last conscious thought of the vibrant smile of the human he'd fallen in love with.
-o-
When I see your smile,
-o-
The first time she'd seen the angel she had felt unworthy, dirty and jealous. Her orange hair fell down her back like molten sun rays, her body slim and tall and her wings as white as fresh snow. A permanent glow seemed to emanate from her and the only thing marring her perfect features were the tears falling from her golden eyes.
Rukia's heart jumped to her throat. With a gulp she gathered all the courage in her tiny body and stepped towards the angel, every step closer toward her perfect figure making her skin crawl and burn. "M-may," she cleared her throat and tried again. "May I help you?"
The flawless creature in front of her raised her head to look at her, her eyes even more beautiful now that they were locked on her own purple ones. Sniffing, the beautiful woman took her hand. "May I know your name?" Her voice shook as she helped the taller woman stand.
-o-
Tears run down my face.
I can't replace.
-o-
The angel regarded her with a look that resembled a lost puppy and, what neither of them knew, this would mark the beginning of over a century of suffering. Just when Rukia was about to ask whether she understood her the rose-colored lips of the angel parted and a voice resembling the tunes of a harp kissed her ears. "I'm Ichigo."
It was the beginning of the end.
-o-
And now that I'm stronger, I have figured out,
How this world turns cold and it breaks through my soul.
And I know I'll find deep inside me,
I can be the one
-o-
Kuchiki Rukia was engaged to a very kind man and she adored him greatly. There was no love for him in her heart, not the kind of love that should be the foundation of a marriage at least, but admiration and respect. But after her encounter with the beautiful angel a wretched feeling spread throughout her body whenever she thought of her impending wedding.
It didn't feel right.
The soft, black silk of her wedding gown felt wonderful beneath her fingertips as she fingered the hem. Her large, expressive eyes stared solemnly ahead as she sat on her bed, maybe for the last time. Her wedding was to be held the next day and her heart was beating too fast for her liking.
Then suddenly there was a breeze of warm wind and that feeling of being unworthy enveloped her again. Rukia's gaze snapped towards her open window and her eyes met the eyes of the angel again.
-o-
I will never let you fall. (let you fall)
-o-
Kurosaki Ichigo was engaged to a very passionate man and she revered him greatly. She did not love him the way a human would, as their love was flawed and sinful and caused nothing but suffering, but she also didn't love him the way an angel would. He only wanted her hand in marriage because of her beautiful white wings, the most pristine an angel had ever acquired in all of heaven, and he knew she would make a wonderful trophy.
Abarai Renji was, after all, the angel of Superbia, the first to be granted that title since the betrayal, and what better angel to fuel his pride than the angel of Caritas, one of the three divine virtues. She had, of course, accepted, what other decision was she supposed to make?
But meeting that human girl had changed something in her. For some reason, that idle, sinful creature stirred something in her she, as a pristine being, was not supposed to feel.
True, passionate love.
Selfish love.
-o-
I'll stand up with you forever.
-o-
"What are you doing here?" The angel only regarded her, mulling over something that eluded the human woman. The feeling of being worthless intensified once more as the angel stepped closer, wordlessly, until she came to a halt in front of her, her glow blinding Rukia.
The next she knew the angel was kissing her, clumsily, but with a vigor that betrayed her graceful appearance.
Then the black-haired woman regained her senses and pushed the angel away, her eyes wide and her heart in an uproar. To her horror the angel didn't seem upset by her action, and instead smiled at her. "I love you." The human froze, but the angel just kept staring at her with a vibrant, naïve smile that made you want to hug her and coo at her.
-o-
I'll be there for you through it all. (through it all)
Even if saving you sends me to heaven.
-o-
Panic enveloped Rukia as everything that had just happened sunk in, and her voice was hysteric as she yelled at the angel, whose expression morphed into one of hurt. "What the heck was that just now! I'm a human, and we're both women! What are you thinking?"
Something flashed in the golden eyes of the angel, and her voice was flat when she answered. "If I were a man, would you reconsider?"
"That doesn't matter!"
The angel was gone in a flurry of feathers.
-o-
It's ok. It's ok. It's ok.
-o-
I will do anything, my dear.
The man's hands on her shoulders were burning like fire as she stared at the black liquid in the iron chalice in front of her, her heart beating fast enough to almost burst.
-o-
Seasons are changing
And waves are crushing
-o-
"And this will help me win her heart?"
Mischief was sound in his voice as he pushed her closer to the goblet, his fingers detestable to her flawless being. "Of course, my dear. Don't you trust me?"
-o-
And stars are falling off for us
Days grow longer and nights grow shorter
-o-
"Should I?" With these words the angel swallowed the contents of the cup, a feeling like ripping apart the last she remembered.
"Probably not." Urahara Kisuke bent down to pick up the empty goblet lying next to the man, blood flowing freely from the wounds in his back where his wings once were. "Who would trust the devil, after all."
-o-
I can show you I'll be the one
-o-
The black wedding gown was heavy on her petite frame as she walked down the small path that would lead her to the aisle, and she wondered what the angel was doing right then, her heart aching.
In her peripheral vision she could already make out the assembled wedding guests and her groom, a little way off. A strong breathe ruffled the silk and lace of her dress, her hair obscuring her vision for a moment. When she was able to see clearly again, her eyes met a pair of amber orbs that were like molten pools of gold, and her heart skipped a beat.
"I will ask you again," the voice was different from before, but she knew he was the angel she met in that dingy alleyway, and she didn't know how he was even able to stand before her like this but she didn't really care for an answer. She was slowly falling into his deep eyes and didn't want to return from their depths. "Will you reconsider?"
She could only stare at him, her mouth slightly agape, and without thinking it through at all, she grasped his outstretched hand in hers, the bouquet of flowers falling from her left hand and onto the ground. All Rukia could see was his beaming smile, his glowing eyes and the promise of a fairytale life.
-o-
I will never let you fall
I'll stand up with you forever
I'll be there for you through it all
Even if saving you sends me to heaven
-o-
But life isn't a fairytale.
Rukia stared happily at the silver ring on her finger, her heart swelling with love as she remembered the moment he put it on her finger with the promise of eternity together.
"You filthy piece of trash." Her head snapped around at the cold voice, her mouth opening in a silent gasp as her gaze met the barrel of a gun, held by the shaking hand of a man, his flaming red hair falling down his back like lava, and his gaze cold as his gray yes, pupils slitted like a snake's, regarded her hatefully. "So you are the scum Ichigo left me for, huh?" As he spoke she could see his curved fangs and reptile tongue, and her blood froze in her veins.
"Say a last prayer, and hope for forgiveness."
Her world was black in a flash.
-o-
Cuz you're my, you're my, my, my true love, my whole heart
Please don't throw that away
Cuz I'm here for you
-o-
The gun crumbled in his hand, the angel no longer worthy of wielding the celestial weapon, and he only looked on impassively, wondering whether it was the fate of the angels of pride to fall sooner or later. His gray eyes flashed to the door as it opened, and in ran the angel he had once been engaged with, the sight of him disgusting him.
Tears were running down the tanned cheeks of the fallen angel as he clutched the bleeding corpse of the human he had broken god's commandment for.
And then he felt the shift in the air, watching on silently as black-feathered wings sprouted from the sinner's back and the wound in the woman's chest healed.
He was breaking another commandment.
The former angel disappeared in a flurry of feathers, and the woman's huge purple eyes only stared on in shock as a single one fell into her outstretched, left hand.
-o-
Please don't walk away,
Please tell me you'll stay, stay
-o-
Rukia was clutching the tiny black feather to her chest, her tears falling from her eyes uncontrollably as she curled into herself at the loss of the man she loved.
"Do you want him back?" The voice froze her body solid, and it took all the power she had left in her broken body to raise her head, only for drops of burning blood to splash on her face as a pale hand ripped through the head and upper body of the angel who had shot her before, the man the hand belonged to smiling at her with his eyes obscured under his bangs. The smile, as warm as it tried to be, oozed pure, unadulterated evil. "Well, do you?"
Her purple eyes flickered to the mutilated corpse of the angel in front of her, his blood pooling from the open veins and staining her dress.
"All you have to do is pledge your soul to me, my dear." He held out his left, blood-stained hand to her, his evil smile never wavering as her teary eyes tried to make out his in the shadow of his hair.
-o-
Use me as you will
Pull my strings just for a drill
-o-
Her hand shook as she grasped his, the blood repulsing her and staining the black feather that was now pressed between their palms like a token of the pledge she was taking.
The smirk of the devil broadened. "Welcome to hell, my dear."
-o-
And I know I'll be ok
Though my skies are turning gray
-o-
"Be thankful he released you from limbo despite your unwillingness to repent, Kurosaki." Amber eyes glared at the haughty angel he was walking down the street with, their presence hidden from the eyes of the humans around them.
He didn't repent, as he didn't regret his love for the young human all those years ago.
All he regretted was dragging her down with him.
-o-
I will never let you fall
I'll stand up with you forever
-o-
While the angel next to him droned on and on he barely managed to avoid bumping into a petite woman walking in his direction. While the humans couldn't see them, they sure as hell could feel them. His gaze followed her on instinct, and the light shining on her silken black hair caught his eye.
And then her earring appeared beneath the strands, and his eyes immediately locked on the black feather standing out amid the white ones, stained with brown.
He followed her without a conscious thought, ignoring the other angel's calls.
-o-
I'll be there for you through it all
Even if saving you sends me to heaven
-o-
Before long he had followed her into a dingy alleyway, not aware it was the very place his descent had begun over a century ago. The lithe woman stopped, and Ichigo barely caught himself a few feet away from her. He felt foolish and naïve, but he had to ask or else succumb to madness at last.
"Rukia?"
The angel didn't expect the woman to turn around, as his presence was still largely disguised, but she did, and her violet eyes were as vibrant and shining as the day they had met. At first her face was too much for him to bear, but slowly he realized that she was not supposed to be there, a hundred years after his sacrifice for her, she was not supposed to hear or see him.
And then he saw her slitted pupils and the hint of curved fangs protruding from between her scarlet lips, the pointed ears and the nails that were claws.
He felt his world crush to shambles.
Sensing his distress Rukia's face morphed into one of hurt and compassion, and her lips curved into a sad smile. "It has been a while, hasn't it?"
-o-
I will never let you fall
-o-
She watched him look her up and down then return his golden gaze to hers. "What happened?"
The demon shrugged her shoulders, attempting to seem uncaring but failing. "After you disappeared the devil showed up and offered to let me see you again." Seeing his shocked expression she chuckled humorlessly. "I wasn't as naïve as you might have taken me for, I could guess what happened to you well enough." She paused, taking a deep, calming breath. "And I knew accepting his offer would be the last chance for me to see you again, at least once."
Tears had started to run down her cheeks against her will, and even more began to fall when she felt his warm hands on her unworthy skin, his forehead touching hers gently and scalding her. "This won't be the last time."
-o-
I'll stand up with you forever
-o-
Before she could ask what he meant by that a voice reached their ears, high and livid and disgusted. "What do you think are you doing, Kurosaki? Haven't you broken enough vows already?" They turned around, Ichigo's hands never leaving her face, and his next words shocked her to the core. "This will be the last one."
The air around them was charged with electricity, his eyes seeking hers, not caring for the enraged angel running at them. Subconsciously she raised her left hand, dark energy rooting him to the spot as she just stared at Ichigo in flabbergasted silence.
"My heart will always be yours."
-o-
I'll be there for you through it all
-o-
The words were heavy with a vow that was even darker than the one she took all those years ago, because he was forsaking more than just his immortal soul.
-o-
Even if saving you sends me to heaven
-o-
But none of that mattered to her when his lips touched hers and flames erupted from the ground.
-o-
Yes, so Renji was the angel of pride, cos in my opinion, he's an arrogant ass, so sue me. And Ichigo represented charity in the original sense, meaning generosity and self-sacrifice, as I thought it fitted him. I hope this wasn't too sad, what with that happy ending and shit.
Inspiration hit me when I listened to "Secret Black Vow", a Vocaloid song, which also explains why Ichigo was a girl for half of this. I always wanted to have him as a girl, but it always sounded so silly that I didn't dare.
Considering a lot of classical plays have the protagonists crush for someone and instantly want to marry them (as well as most Disney movies... yes, I'm looking at you, Arielle and Anna) I thought I may be allowed that little freedom as well~
