A Surprise for Alice

"Just a few more steps love!"

"Hatter, we're in the apartment, you don't need to cover my eyes. It's not really a surprise of where we are." Alice said, placing her hands on his.

She felt his chest rumble against her back as he chuckled, "Ye of little faith. You should know by now, I have surprises around every corner. I felt that eye roll miss!"

"Hatter." she warned

"Fine, fine. Before I reveal the special surprise, I want you to think long and hard about what today is."

"Tuesday?"

"Yes, good. Tuesday…"

"March second?"

"Yes! Splendid! You're ready!"

Alice felt a wave of panic, did she forget his birthday? No, that wasn't until May. Was it an anniversary? When they met? When they started dating? When he came back? She wasn't the best with dates, but she always remembered those days….

"Three….Two….Two and half…" He drummed his fingers on top of her eyes.

"Uncover my eyes!" She said, becoming more and more anxious.

"One!"

He removed his hands and Alice saw that their kitchen table was connected with about four others, with a giant yellow tablecloth spread on top. There were a dozen seats, each one unlike the one next to it. Also, more tea pots than Alice had ever seen in one setting. Every kind of desert imaginable was placed around the table, mostly little cakes. The most outstanding, a large pink with three layers and tiny white candles surrounding the poor thing.

"Hatter, I don't understand…"

"Nonsense! Of course you do. Sit, sit, sit." he said pushing her into one of the seats. He plopped her down at the head of the table in a big cushy chair. She sunk into it while he sat in the chair beside her.

He picked up the remote for the DVD player and pointed it at the television. "Went nuts tying to find this, I had to talk to your mother about it. Apparently you have three different kinds of ways to watch a film. Ridiculous. And, action!"

The television sprang to life, revealing the back of a blonde girl in a blue dress. There was whistling as the girl made her way closer to the noise. Alice stared at Hatter in disbelief.

"You're joking right?"

"Shush! This is my favorite part."

The lyrics to Merry Unbirthday came to their ears. Alice saw Hatter bopping along with the beat and quietly whistling. He began to sing along with the words, intently watching the screen.

"Imagine if I actually looked like that love." he said pointing to the Mad Hatter on the screen. "Wouldn't ever get laid, would I? Not from a pretty thing like you anyway." he winked at her, giving her that crooked smirk that she loved, and before she could respond he began singing again. Alice poured them some tea, shaking her head. He was right, this was definitely a surprise.

"There better not be a rat on this table." Alice said to the air, jokingly of course, before raising her cup to take a sip. Hatter swatted her hand.

"Not yet!" He protested. She put the cup down gently and continued to watch the screen. She sang along quietly, since she knew all the words. By the end, they were belting, waiting for their favorite part.

"Wait for it." Alice and Hatter braced themselves, edging at the end of their seats, their hands at the end of the table, ready to spring up.

"Change places!" They chorused together. Hatter and Alice shot up and ran to different seats, crashing into the tables making some of the tea pots topple over. They finally landed and broke into laughter, as they lovingly looked at each other.

Hatter picked up the remote and pressed pause again. He got up, bringing the large pink cake to her. He sat beside her, "Merry Unbirthday my little oyster." He kissed the top of her head. "Make a wish." he whispered into her ear.

She looked up at him with her big blue eyes, and inched closer to him, resting her forehead on his. "I already have it."
