Chapter 16

"Got a feeling that I'm going under
But I know that I'll make it out alive….

.You watch me bleed until I can't breathe
I'm shaking falling onto my knees."

The next few days passed in a blur. Anya remained for two days in the private ward, rebuilding her barriers and controls. She spent a fair amount of time sending out letters to handle the fall-out from the party while dodging the undoubtedly number of people "stopping" by her rooms.

Word had spread like wild fire at what had happened at the party and how Anya was barely seen around. More importantly, she withdrew from everyone. No clan had received any word or reply from her at all.

But her rage was noted in the standard letter she sent out to everyone, withdrawal herself and her "services" until further notice.

She chose to punish everyone. She simply disappeared.

Salus, on the other hand, spent the following days after the attack unconscious. Drifting through dreams that sometimes seemed like memories that always slipped out of reach when he woke up and his wildly surging magic. Litiso was keeping a careful eye on him, as Salus's magic shifted and changed. Physically, Salus was healed quickly. But his mind and magic was another story. And Anya had to be in full control before she could even attempt to help the human.

The new term started and Salus was still confined in the private ward. He was conscious more and more, and Anya finally regained full control. She was also trying to explain to her clan what exactly had happened.

It was quite embarrassing to say she accidentally magically adopted a twin human brother.

Gossip picked up school wide, according to Litiso, when neither of them returned to class with the start of the term. While Anya's presence as an apprentice could be explained, Salus's absence was raising eyebrows. He hadn't been seen at the party. Anya 'passed' on a missive 'from' Salus to the administration citing his absence as "familiar obligations in the human realm". Shakti had some leeway for "clan" work. Litiso lent his help in this as he "confirmed" Salus's absence, mentioning he had visited the human in the human realm as he had a scheduled medical check-up.

The elf did not mention that both Faeli and Alcander had approached him for further information. Information that the elf had blandly stated he did not have. Rather Salus Moriens "had regular medical checks due to the nature of his magic and the development since his attendance at Shakti." And it was truthful. Salus's magic would not have changed as much as it did if he had remained in the Human Realm, without contact with the multiple branches of magic he had been exposed to. Litiso has allowed himself to smirk as he also mentioned he was not allowed to extrapolate further due to patient confidentiality.

The interest from both professors was eyebrow raising even if Salus Moriens was an unusual student for both of them but to seek information on a personal level was practically unheard of, especially in the case of a student unrelated to them. Alcander had some leeway, with Salus being "the prodigy in Summoning" and his knowledge of Salus's unusual magical make up. But such personal interactions, from both men, was a drama all on its own.

"It's rather impressive how fast you got your controls back," Litiso commented as Anya sat next to Salus's bed, waiting for the boy to wake up. She finally had enough control to help the human sort out his mind. Litiso had joined her just in case.

Anya sent the elf a dry look as she replied, "Most of my life has been focussed on creating these controls."

Darian merely stared at her. Anya met his gaze head on and unflinchingly. The healer, in an even voice, said "You studied here to be a Seer and a healer first. Now Death Magic. You weren't given a choice in regards to learning to control your Sight. And being a High Seer, you are entrenched in the magic. Elven sight is different."

Anya nodded stiffly. "Elven Sight is a gift; at times you ask. Like Draconi. I don't ask. I demand and I am shown. Even the branches of magic are different."

Darian hummed as he nodded but their conversation halted as Salus stirred. The elf moved his hand, touching the human gently on the forehead.

"I can bring him out of it. Create a three-way connection. I'll remain an observer just in case."

Anya nodded as Salus's eyes snapped open, shifting from an emerald green into the striking blue she was more familiar with.

Salus groaned. His body felt heavy as he blinked, vision clearing, to see both Anya and Litiso hovering by his bed.

"Hey bro," Anya chirped, with a grin albeit a tired one.

Salus's blinked in response.

"Yeah," Anya continued at his blank expression, "not feeling that either. So, Salus or Harry?"

"Harry's dead," Salus replied, trying to understand everything, even with his head spinning. It was hard to tell dreams or visions from reality. And he had been whirling around in both for days now. Physically he was healed, if he remembered correctly, but still reeling from the mental shock.

Anya blinked at the response before nodding after a moment, "Right, I forgot. Your goblins are helping set that. I can be your witness to that, by the way."

Salus blinked at her with wide eyes.

"Right, first sort out the mess in your head. Ready?"

Salus opened his mouth to answer but Anya had already reached out and touched his temple. And all Salus knew was darkness once again.

"Well, I know you're alive but I need to know if you're still a fully functioning being," Anya's voice cut through the darkness as Salus struggled to wake up damn it.

It almost took more than he had, to open his eyes. The room was thankfully dim. The pain, on the other hand, only worsened as he woke up fully. Salus moaned as the pain overtook his senses.

Muttering from Anya, and being fed a potion that tasted of nasty socks helped alieve the pain partly, enough to for Salus to sit up and take account of where he was. And what had happened.

Salus blinked as he tried to make sense of what was happening. "What's going on?"

"You don't remember?" Litiso stepped forward, worried evident in his voice. His own concerns over the changes in Salus's magic (and genes) were the effect it would have on the human's already unstable bonds. How it would effect could have happened already, or could happen in time especially with Anya's unique magic. There was no standard rule book for what was happening.

Salus blinked at the elf as he tried to recall what had happened. Anya stayed quiet at his side, eyes locked on him with a gaze that should have been eerie.

Salus thought for a moment before the memories trickled forward. "We have a familiar soul bond. You helped me re-organise my mind and stabilise my magic?"

Anya nodded, "You have your mental facilities back. Your mental defences are a bitch by the way. I want to meet that Salazar ghost who came up with the idea."

Salus actually shuddered at the thought of Anya meeting Salazar but bit back with a smirk, "Maybe he could make you into a decent potion maker."

"He made you one so it should be easy," Anya threw back without missing a beat as her smile grew.

"Before you two having your first sibling moment, may I check Mr Moriens' health? And his memory? You know, the very things we have spent this week worrying over?" Litiso cut in with his dry voice.

The healer sighed at the twin blank looks. 'Dear Kali help us. These two are a handful on their own and now they have permanently teamed up.'

Salus started to recite what he recalled from his memory: the mishap before the party with the wards. Waking up in these rooms after the party and Anya had been attacked. That she used her magic to protect him and they shared a familiar soul bond. The second time he woke up, she helped wort out his mind. And now, he felt some pain but he felt better. More settled in control. And somehow more at peace with Anya knowing about his real identity because he knew hers.

When Litiso declared him as "reasonably healthy and not dying the imminent future", Salus could only turn to Anya and ask "Now what?"

Salus found himself once again confined in the infirmary, granted in a private room and under observation until Sunday evening.

Litiso had levelled a look so dry when he gave the sentence that Salus kept any comments to himself and Anya just hovered in the background quietly. She had managed to keep his presence in the medial ward quiet, and perpetuated the fact that Salus was dealing with personal business.

The first week of the new term was almost over.

Everything and nothing had changed. He was still dying but he now had a sister of sorts.

He still had to deal with Voldemort, the new term at Shakti and catch up on knowledge he should know but doesn't.

Salus also had to finalise Harry Potter's death and create the evidence. Anya had mentioned in passing that she could help.

But all of this requires leaving the hospital wing where he was kept prisoner by the healer elf. He didn't have time, not enough, to do what he planned.

And they still had to deal with the fallout from the party and what feels like a war with the vampire clans. Anya's attention made him a prime target.

Salus groaned as he slumped further into his pillow, resisting the urge to scream in frustration. What had felt like a controlled situation was spiralling out of control.

Too much was happening.

Not enough was being done.

And he still didn't know who and how far he can trust these new people.

'I should make a list,' Salus thought grimly as he wandlessly summoned a notebook and pen from the bag of his things. Anya had packed some of his things for his weeklong stay in the infirmary despite being unconscious for most of it. She included the books he had been reading, which seems like such a long time ago, but it all seem so mundane in comparison to his problems.

Sitting up, Salus started writing.

'Anya will be by after dinner. We can make a plan of action.'
