DISCLAIMER: Me no own. Life goes on. (when I'm Goooone... shutting up.)

Maureen Johnson is laying on her face, on the floor, humming Octopus's Garden and playing with a spoon. She is five, and her mommy has left her alone, in her room. Many toys are scattered around the room, but Mo finds a certain pleasure in playing with things that no one would expect.

Mo's mommy and daddy are fighting about money in the next room. She is not worried, because they fight like this every night, then mommy starts to cry, then daddy says he is sorry, and then Mo hears a lot of banging against her wall. Mommy and daddy are always happy in the morning.

Her big sister, Abigail, has come home for the week from university. Mo likes Abigail, because she tells her stories, and dances with her, sings, and always has candy in her bag. But most of all, Mo likes Abigail because Abigail takes her to plays.

The two sisters have much in common, from their madly curling brown tresses, to the way they snort when they think something is absolutely hilarious, but most of all, they have Broadway. Their favourite show is Hair. Their parents, contemporaries of the sixties revolutions, are unsuprised with their daughters' choice of activites, and assume that the girls will settle down when they are older, like they did.

When Mo and Abi go out, they have a ritual; first, they go to the grocery store, and buy a big box of Apple Jacks, and a bottle of Cream Soda. Then, they sit on a park bench in Thompkins Square and feed the cereal to the pigeons, drinking the pop themselves, before picking a new show to go to. They do this because Mo thinks that even vermin deserve a little compassion.

They pick Chicago. Mo likes it, and her sister knows that she would. The next hallowe'en when Abi is home again, they go trick-or-treating as Velma and Roxie.

Mo has a best friend. His name is Mark. She likes him okay, and he adores her when she isn't making him cry. They play blocks together in school, and sometimes even dress-up.

When they get big, Mark and Maureen go out for a while, and she busts his heart for the last time. But that's another story.
