"His Spark"

By MakoRain

There was always blood, so much blood. Everywhere he turned he saw red in pools all over the body.

How could one single bullet cause such a mess?

He ran to his fallen friend, always a moment too late. He would look around, trying to see who or what had done this before turning to the still body in military uniform.

This time, something was different.

Instead of a mess of unruly black hair there was a sheen of pale blond now tinged red as the blood soaked each strand slowly. Quickly, he sank to his knees, fighting futily to stem the flow of the life blood pouring out of her.

Instead of black lifeless eyes he was met with light hazel ones, looking back up at him into nothingness.

No, not Riza.

Nothing he did could bring that spark of life back. It didn't matter, it never did.

Roy woke up with a start, his body shaking and bare chest heaving as he took in deep breaths of air, trying to calm his nerves.

Not Riza.

He wiped the sweat off of his forehead with still trembling hands, clenching them into fists.

Riza didn't die. Riza's-

A shift by his side caused his heart to stutter before a small hand tucked those same pale blond strands behind her ear and hazel eyes blinked up at him sleepily.

"Roy?"

Riza is alive.

The shock on his face made Riza ask worriedly, "Are you okay? You're so pale."

He didn't bother answering her question, instead grabbing her up in a bear hug and squeezing her tight. She laughed and that made him hold her tighter, clucthing him to his chest.

It was so good to hear her laugh after what his mind had just been put through.

"What has gotten into you?"

She looked up at him from her place cuddled into his chest and he eased his death grip, rubbing up and down her arms where he had been holding her so tightly.

"Would I sound like a complete prick if I said I was happy it was Maes that died instead of you?"

Riza wore a look of surprise that spoke volumes even if she couldn't ask him where such a question had come from. He'd been having nightmares again. She didn't want to bring up painful memories for them both.

"A prick? You may be a smart ass from time to time but I don't think ever a prick."

His hands stopped combing through her ever growing hair to look at her with a smirk.

"Haha, very funny."

A few moments passed by before either spoke.

He was the one to break the silence once again. "If I lost you, I'd lose my spark."

Riza pressed her face into his chest, hiding her smile at how corny that had sounded but she knew what he meant. It really was the sweetest way he could express himself.

He was the Flame Alchemist after all, his spark was everything. She was his spark.

"I love you, too. Now let's get some sleep."

She leaned up to kiss his lips softly before slipping back down onto the bed to rest at his side, her back to him as she waited expectantly. He obeyed the wordless order, leaning onto his side and sliding his arm along her waist with a whispered, "Yes, ma'am."

This was met with an elbow to his stomach, making him groan in her ear lightly before kissing her cheek. She had him trained well, and he'd never forget it, nor regret it.

As it was meant to be.

The End.

A/N: It's kind of a weird way to end it but the more I wrote, the worse it got so I did the best I could do after my laptop deleted the end of my first draft-grumbles at picky technology-Please R&R.
