A/N Sorry it's kind of a short one-shot, but I tried to add more and just couldn't.
I hope those voting for the Carlisle's Birthday one-shot contest like it. (Those, too, who aren't voters, I hope you like it also.) For that is what this is for.
Enjoy!
R&R
I knew coming home from work would be an experience to remember. We hadn't celebrated a birthday in nearly forty years, the year we changed Emmett. But I smiled none the less, my children, my family, were quite boisterous, I just hoped that they didn't do anything too outrageous. They would have to rein Alice back if that was so.
I pulled into the graveled driveway and relished in the sound that came along with the tires crunching against the small rocks. When I neared the end, I slowed down, still worried with what was to come. I cautiously got out of my Mercedes and closed my door by leaning wearily against it. Surprised that there were no bright streamers or party favors covering the house.
My family was standing outside our small home in Oregon, watching me with excited eyes. Esme stood near the front and extended her hand towards me as I stood a few feet away from them, they had been awaiting my homecoming for a while now.
"Come, darling, we have something to show you." She smiled warmly and I took her hand, letting her lead me into the large granite entryway. It was normal except for the small package on the old, antique even, hunter's table.
The rest followed us closely, their smiles covering their whole face."We didn't know what you would want, so we got the first thing that came to mind." Emmett told me this sincerely, something I had yet to see from him.
"Thank you," I looked at him before turning to all of my children, then my wife who had walked over to hand me the small cardboard box which was wrapped in "Happy Birthday" floral print. I took it cautiously in my hand, examining the wrapping paper closely.
"It was Alice's idea," I heard Edward tell me from the back of the room. Then there was a loud smack and I guessed that was Alice's idea of payback. I smiled at my children before slowly un-peeling one piece of tape.
It took a couple of minutes and encouraging coughs to finally get it all off. I unfolded the paper from the box and let it fall to the floor, I was shocked at what I was holding in my hands.
I turned to look at the anxious people staring at me patiently. My shock slowly turned into pure happiness.
"Thank you," I murmured gratefully.
"Happy Birthday!" I heard a small voice pipe up from the back. Emmett pretended to count his fingers.
"Happy 350th birthday!" Emmett sang with Alice. I laughed at how that sounded and in the background my family started to sing, I held what was in my hand appreciatively and wrapped my other arm around Esme's waist.
I kissed her ear, "Thank you, darling, it's perfect."
"It's so very little compared to the love we always give you, the love that you will always be given. That's your real present, the present of companionship, the present of family, just don't waste it. Though I have no doubt in my mind that you would ever use it for selfish needs. Because that's not you, we knew you would be happy with anything that we got you, so we got you the one thing that really showed exactly what we were trying to say." Esme took it from my hand and placed it on the fireplace mantle.
I smiled at the little picture frame, "You are the number one dad." They all said at once.
"Happy Birthday."
A/N Please review, I enjoy what you have to say!
Was it too short?
