Day One.

"This time when kindness falls like rain
It washes me away. And Anna begins to change my mind.
And every time she sneezes I believe it's love"

-Counting Crows "Anna Begins"

He did not believe in love - or, at least he never had before he met her.

It was so damn hard for him to come to terms with the fact that he could maybepossiblysortof love her. Charlie was in love with dragons, his work, his freedom - not girls. There was something about this girl that made that statement so, so false.

It had been so unplanned. George had set them up on a date when Charlie had came up from Romania a few years back. Charlie really had not wanted to go but after a bit of coaxing and pleading from his younger brother, he complied. The only thing that George had told him about this girl was that she was different.

Different. Well, that was one way to describe her but Charlie thought that adjectives like perfect, spectacular, and amazing were more fitting. Everything about Verity made him question his thoughts on love. She was so fascinating, he could just listen to her talk forever. She was, unlike most girls, interested in the work that he did in Romania; she had said once how she had always wanted to go there. Before Charlie knew it, he was fallingfallingfalling so damn hard for the blonde. He caught himself making up various excuses about why he had to go back up to England. "I haven't seen the family in a while." "That - that concert." "Teddy's third birthday is right around the corner." Each time he went up, he found himself spending more and more time with Verity. It scared him.

He wasn't ready for this. He wasn't ready to fall in love - was anyone really? Charlie never wanted to feel like he needed anyone but, recently, he realized how much he did need her. How much he missed her and all of the little things that she did when he was away. Her laugh. Her sense of humor. The way she always put her left shoe on first. The way she looked at him. Just e v e r y t h i n g.

Now, as he woke up, his arms wrapped around her slim figure, he knew exactly what he had to do - what he wanted to do. Charlie cleared all trace of fear of commitment, fear of dependence, fear of rejection from his mind as he took in a deep breath. He moved his lips close beside her ear and whispered, "I love you, Verity."
