For "ignorance is the mother of devotion," as all the world knows.– Robert Burton

Edward Jacob Cullen loved his sister.

He loved more than anything else in the world, more than their parents, their grandparents, their aunts and uncles. She was more precious to him than any material thing in the world could ever be.

He was her brother, her protector. He was always there to take care of her and help her when she needed it. He loved her so much it hurt.

Because he knew he could never have her. She was his sister and in the eyes of the world, what they felt for each other was wrong. Even though to him, nothing else felt more right.

He never felt more calm and happy then when he was with her, making her laugh and smile, dancing with her through meadows to a song they could only hear, playing the piano as she hummed along, arguing over the TV remote, teasing each other mercilessly…tasting her lips, kissing her in that way that made her giggle, his hands exploring her soft pale skin, her gasping as he explores the sensitive spots with his tongue, her moans as he thrusts into her, so wet, warm and inviting…

He loved her so, so much. But she loved their family too and she couldn't bear to lose them. Not even for him.

So what ever made her happy…

"You won't remember a thing."

His hand on her temple, tears streaming down her cheeks, eyes filled with regret.

"I'm sorry."

The nomadic vampire assured him that his power was lasting, that the memories once erased were gone forever. For a moment, he felt doubt and wanted to back out. He could run away with her, start over, just the two of them. Run to some place far away where no one knew them and they could be together.

But he squashed those thoughts just as soon as they came. He was a realist at best and he knew that they would be found eventually. Even with all his nifty little talents, they couldn't hide forever for all they wanted.

And it was better this way, he tried to convince himself. Better for everyone (else) that is.

"I'm sorry too."

Because he loved her too much, because he had to tear his own heart out for her and he would do this all willingly.

With a deep sigh, he started to concentrate and closed his eyes feeling the rush of power in his hand, concentrating on erasing what he wanted.

Her memories flashed through his mind as well as hers in a fast pace, like blurs of light almost not understandable but he recognized and understood them just the same. The first time he kissed her under the mistletoe that Christmas, that night in Paris where they broke into the Eiffel tower and danced under the moonlight, the first time he told her he loved her, the first time he made love to her…and so much more memories, so beautiful and tragic, he had to stop himself from crying.

Faith was cruel. Because the one girl he'll ever love is the one he can never have.

His hand fell from her temple when it's done. He stared at the perfect face of his beautiful twin as she opened her chocolate brown eyes, full of innocence.

"What happened?"

She smiled the way only a sister can smile at her brother and his heart ached in his chest so badly that he wanted to die.

"Nothing."

Nothing at all.

I adore Edward Jacob Cullen. I make him into such a tragic character.

By the way, his power is absorbing and mimicking the powers of vampires.
