It's a World War

Chapter 1. The Back Story

Baston. A forest quite similar to any other gathering of trees... save for the fact that it was in the center of a war zone.

A tall shadow shot between the dense trees; his figure outlined by what little moonlight had managed to filtered through the canopy. Suddenly a blast exploded near him sending chunks of dirt ricocheting off of his helmet.

Completely unfaised by the attack, the soldier continued on. Running at top speed seemingly ignoring the barrage of mortar fire that followed the first shot. Even through the rumblings of the explosions around him, if one listened close enough, they would hear his gasps for breath, the clink of his ammunition in his pockets or the shifting of the gears in the rifle he was carrying.

Light snow flurries mixed with clumps of dirt that cascaded through the air, clinging to his already bulky uniform as he continued to run. Calls from familiar voices in the shadows told him he was almost safe, almost able to breathe normally.

It was his won fault when he didn't notice the obstacle blocking his way, sending him face first into the ground. Reacting immediately he gave a few curses then turned to see what it was that had tripped him. Another mortar exploded just off to the side of him giving him a moment of light. In that split second that he had he saw wide eyes staring up at him from a younger soldier who was painstakingly clawing his way to the fox holes just up ahead.

They shared a moment in time, watching each other, before the soldier once again heard the shouts from the others calling his name. Without a second thought the soldier pulled up the other man, gazing him over carefully and as fast as possible he only saw a gash on his forehead. The kid would live, the soldier decided. So, without a moment to spare, he raised his injured comrade and carried him over his shoulder the rest of the way to the closest fox hole.

Diving in just in time to escape the main blast of another mortar round but not soon enough to dodge the injury to the head that knocked him unconscious.

I'll tell you upfront that this story is going to have a cliffhanger as an ending but its a good one. BB end up together, with a few bumps along the way, a fight or two. Its also going to be a very short story. it was supposed to be a oneshot but i wanted people to review about the prologue before I continued. You'll review right?
