On with the show.
She looked so small lying there in that hospital bed. Tubes and wires surrounding her, beeping machines and monitors everywhere, she looked so helpless.
So fragile.
Dom reached out to hold her tiny palm in his own, her thumb was no bigger than his pinky finger, he noticed. He smiled slightly at that. She was always small, smaller than Mia, smaller than Letty even. She had the cutest little nose on her heart shaped face, cupid's-bow lips, and the biggest soulful brown eyes that could get her whatever she wanted… But they weren't open.
The doctors weren't sure if they ever would again.
Dom looked up at the sound of the door opening and saw Mia slip inside, closing the door quietly. She had a Styrofoam cup in her hand which she handed over to him. Coffee, he discovered after a sip. He needed it. He took a bigger mouthful and rubbed a hand over his scalp, feeling the stubble there. He couldn't remember the last time he shaved.
"I talked to Letty. Let her know that we'll be a few more days." Mia murmured, "You should go back to the hotel Dom, get some sleep. I'll call if there's any changes."
Dom shook his head, "No," he said, "I'm fine." He wasn't leaving. He wasn't there when child services took her six years ago after he got arrested, and he sure as hell wasn't going to leave her side when it looked like death was angling to take her away too. He couldn't.
Mia understood. She gripped his shoulder in comfort as they both sat in silence and watched the still form of their baby sister. The soft beeps of the machines and the rasp of the respirator fading into the hum of white noise that filled the hospital.
Some time later Dom broke the quiet, "She hasn't changed, has she?"
Mia stroked her sisters forehead, the only part of her that wasn't covered in bandages, "Just older, her hair's longer, that's about the only thing I can see. She's still so tiny." she breathed a soft chuckle, "Vince used to call her the littlest Toretto when we were kids. She would get so mad at him… She got Letty to beat him up once, remember?"
Dom smirked at the memory, and remembered another. "You know, its funny, she's the one who dragged him home with her in the first place. Like he was a stray puppy, you remember that?" he asked Mia, who nodded. "She had fallen off her bike -lost a training wheel or something- and he fixed it for her. Put a band-aid on her knee and everything…"
"And she drug him all the way to the garage to tell you about it, then asked you if she could keep him." Mia added, "God, she hero worshipped him for like a month after that. She was what? Four?"
"Yeah… me and Vince have been friends ever since."
Their conversation drifted off and the siblings were quiet again, worried and afraid for their youngest. Eventually Dom succumbed to exhaustion and Mia wrapped him in a blanket before letting her own eyes flutter shut. They were both so tired.
Ring…Ring…Ring…
"Hello?"
"May I speak to a Dominic or Mia Toretto please?"
"This is Dominic."
"My name is Doctor James Everett, I'm calling from Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City… Your sister Rosalie has been in an accident."
"What? Wh-What kind of accident?"
"There was an explosion at the theater where she was performing… she was... injured in the blast"
Dom couldn't speak. It felt as if someone punched him in the gut. He couldn't breathe. The doctors words echoed in his head like a bad recording.
…She's slipped into a coma.
Explosion.
…We have her on life support.
Injured in the blast.
… I'm sorry.
That was my first chapter, hope it made sense, since I didn't know exactly when Dom went to jail or got out. And it is pre-movie right now if you didn't catch that, but will follow the first movie closely (kinda) as the story progresses. I'm dragging out the time-line, so it will take longer than the month (and three weeks) the movie says it does when Brian enter the picture.
Examples on the time-line:
-Mia quote at Toretto's café: "Every day for the last three weeks you've been coming in here and you've been asking me how the tuna is."
-Tran quote before car explosion: "I'll see you out in the desert next month."
Love ya
