It was a beautiful day in feudal Japan. Kagome and her friends had just finished off some task they had in a nearby village. They returned and were currently resting in Kaede's village.
"Are you going home, Kagome?" Sango asked, watching Kagome put on her yellow backpack. It was just her, Kagome, and Kirara in the house. Miroku and Shippou were off in the village and Inuyasha was most likely at the tree he normally sits in, watching the whole village or being lost in his own thoughts.
"Yeah, I have some important tests tomorrow that I can't miss," Kagome said.
"Well, whatever these tests are, good luck in defeating them," Sango said.
"Thanks, I'll need all the luck I can get," Kagome said. "Well, I'm off!" She left the house and headed towards the bone eater's well.
"Where do you think you're going in such a hurry?" Inuyasha asked, walking down the path towards her. His arms were in the sleeves of each other.
"What does it look like? I'm going home," Kagome said, putting her hands on her hips.
"Home? What for?" he asked.
"I have some important tests tomorrow and I need to study for them!" Kagome said.
"What're you gettin all snippy for? I only asked you a simple question!" Inuyasha yelled.
"Well don't make it sound like there's a problem with me going home once in a while!" Kagome yelled.
"There's no problem with that, I just wanted to know the reason since I'm the one that has to come and get you!" Inuyasha yelled.
"You don't have to come and get me! I can come back just fine by myself!" Kagome snapped. She stormed by Inuyasha.
"The past few times you went home don't exactly back up what you said you know," Inuyasha said.
"Sit boy!" Kagome yelled. The beads slammed Inuyasha to the ground as he screamed. She grumbled as she walked away, jumped down the bone eater's well, and got back to present day Japan.
The day after she returned to her time, she ran to school and met up with her friends.
"Oh? It's Kagome!" Ayumi said.
"Hi Kagome! I can't believe you had the measles!" Eri said.
"How did you recover so quickly? Your grandpa said you'd just got them yesterday!" Ayumi said.
"Oh, ah, um, well you see…" Kagome drifted off.
"More important, what about that no good two timing cheat of a boyfriend you have?" Yuka said.
"Wh-what about him?" Kagome asked, a small bead of sweat appearing on her cheek.
"Well have you dumped his sorry butt or not?" Yuka yelled.
"Kagome!" Hojo yelled as he ran up to the girls.
"Oh, it's Hojo," Ayumi said.
"I heard you had the measles so I was going to stop by your house after school today. I found some medical herbs that were supposed to help, but I guess you don't need them since you recovered. Say, how did you recover so quickly? Normally it takes people a long time to get over it, yet you just got it yesterday. I-I mean not that you're not normal or anything! I just…" he trailed off. The bell rang as he finished speaking and Kagome breathed a sigh of relief.
"Sorry, but I don't want to be late for class. Bye guys!" Kagome said as she dashed to her first class. "That was close. Looks I was saved by the bell," she muttered as she walked to class alone.
The morning flew by fast and Kagome and her friends sat together to eat lunch.
"How do you think you did on the exam, Kagome?" Ayumi asked.
"Ugh. I think I failed it. And I studied really hard last night too," Kagome sighed.
"Hey, did you hear that our school is getting an exchange student?" Eri said.
"Really?" Kagome asked.
"Yeah, and get this, someone said her last name was Higurashi!" Eri said.
"Seriously?" Kagome yelled, slamming her hands on the table. The three of them stared at her, along with a few groups of people that were nearby.
"Yeah."
"Do you know what her first name is?" Kagome asked, learning close to Eri's face.
"Um…I don't remember," she mumbled, leaning away from her. Kagome sighed and sat back down.
Later that day Kagome left school and was on her way back to her home.
"Could it really be her? Is she seriously back in Tokyo?" Kagome whispered, looking up at the sky. "It's been so long since I last saw her. And so much as happened to me too. I wonder if she's changed at all."
"Hey sis!" Sota yelled, running up behind her. "Hurry up! Mom told me she wants us to hurry home after school!" He ran past her.
"What? Oh, wait up Sota!" She yelled, running after him. After a few minutes of running, they arrived back at home.
"Mom! We're home!" Sota yelled. Kagome leaned against the doorframe.
"You…didn't…have to…run so….fast," Kagome panted. Sota laughed.
"Sorry sis. But you know, you really should get your stamina up. That run should have been nothing for you," Sota said. Kagome's eye twitched while her eyebrows slanted downwards.
"You little…"
"Now now, children. No fighting. But I am glad that you two got back so quickly," their mom said, walking out of a side room and into the main hallway.
"Why did you want us back so soon, Mom?" Sota asked. Kagome, now having caught her breath, took off her shoes and walked further into the house.
"Well, there's someone I want you two to meet. Kagome, you've met her before but I doubt you'd remember her. You two were very young when she left. Anyway, you can come in!" their mom said, calling to someone in the other room at the end.
A girl came around the corner. She was Kagome's age, had long silver hair that reminded Kagome of a certain brother of Inuyasha's. The girl's eyes were golden and she had two blue streaks on each of her cheeks.
"Um, who is this?" Kagome asked. She didn't remember meeting such a person from this time period.
"My name is Soishi Higurashi. It's a pleasure to see you again, Kagome. And I don't believe I've ever met you, little boy," Soishi said, barely making eye contact. She held her head high, slightly moving it as she greeted the siblings.
"Sorry, I really don't remember you," Kagome said.
"I didn't really expect you to. I left when we were both very young," Soishi said.
"I'm Sota, Kagome's little brother!" Sota said, walking up to Soishi and holding out his hand.
"Hello Sota," Soishi said with a gentle smile, shaking his hand.
"So, where have you been? How old are you?" Sota asked. Soishi's smile grew a little.
"I've been researching my ancestry and I am 17 years old," Soishi said. Her answers sent Sota into a question frenzy.
"How are you related to us?" he asked.
"I was adopted into the family."
"Do you know who your real parents are?"
"Yes actually. Sadly I am unable to come into further contact with them though. Their current whereabouts are unknown. However, now I know about some of my ancestors as far back as the feudal era," she said.
"Really? That's awesome! Were they some famous people we learn about in school? Or the average villager?"
Soishi folded one of her arms and leaned her elbow on the folded arm, resting a finger on her chin as she thought about an answer. "Hmm. I guess in certain circles they were well known," she said.
"Why don't we all move into the living room? Then you can tell us all about your research, Soishi," Kagome's mom said.
"That's a great idea Mom!" Kagome said. They all went into the living room. As they were sitting around the table, Soishi pulled out a rolled up parchment. Unrolling it, she laid it down on the table, revealing her family tree.
It was almost blank, except for a few names here and there.
"Uh, Soishi? There's not much on it," Sota pointed out.
"Good observation Sota. You see, from what I found, most of my ancestors were demons. In fact, my many times great grandfather was the lord of the western dog demon lands. I'd found out that he had two wives, one at a time. His first wife was a full blooded dog demon. I couldn't find her name at all, no matter where or how hard I searched. They had a son named Sesshomaru, who also happens to be my many times great grandfather. Then, Grandpa Sesshomaru's father left his first wife to be with a human. They had a son named Inuyasha, who is my many times Great Uncle," Soishi explained. Kagome's eyes widened.
"You're…his great granddaughter?" Kagome whispered. Soishi glanced at Kagome.
"What was that?" she asked.
"Huh? Oh, nothing nothing!" Kagome said, laughing nervously. "So, um, did you happen to find any pictures?" Not that she needed to know what Inuyasha or Sesshomaru looked like.
"Oh yeah! I found a few!" Soishi exclaimed, digging into her backpack. She pulled out a few pictures with Inuyasha and Sesshomaru on them. Well, they were more drawings since digital pictures weren't exactly a thing back in the feudal era.
"Hey Soishi! Did you find anything else out about your Grandpa Sesshomaru or your Uncle?" Sota asked.
"Yes I did. In fact, I found out that my Uncle Inuyasha got married to-"Soishi was interrupted by a door sliding open, revealing none other than Inuyasha standing there, looking very annoyed.
"Hey Kagome, what's taking you so long?" Inuyasha said. The door was behind Soishi so she couldn't see who it was at first. Taking advantage of this, Kagome jumped up and ran to get Inuyasha out of eyesight of Soishi. He yelped in surprise and she pulled him outside.
"What are you doing here?" Kagome whispered.
"I'm here to take you back. And what's with the whispering?" Inuyasha asked in his normal tone.
"Keep it down! We have a guest over today and if she sees you, she might ask questions that shouldn't be asked or answered!" Kagome whispered.
"Who the hell is this guest anyway? She don't look like those three friends of yours and she sure didn't smell like someone related to you," Inuyasha asked.
"I'll tell you when we get back! You just have to leave now before she comes and starts asking questions!" Kagome said. Inuyasha stood there for a moment, glancing between the house and Kagome.
Soishi rolled up the scroll and put it and the pictures back into her backpack. She glanced at the open sliding door Kagome had dragged their guest from.
"Who came that made Kagome act like that?" Soishi asked.
"That was just Inu-" Kagome's mom covered Sota's mouth.
"Just a friend of Kagome's," she said. Soishi raised an eyebrow.
"Is that so?" she said. She was about to ask another question but Sota moved his mom's hand from his mouth.
"So Soishi, since your ancestors were demons does that make you part demon too?" Sota asked.
"Huh? Oh, um, yeah. Once I find my parents I'll find out how much demon I am, but for now all I know is that I am at least part demon. Enough to be able to appear as I am now and have some of the powers my ancestors had. The only things I am desperately trying to figure out is to what extent these powers went and how many of them I inherited," she explained.
"What do you mean by 'appear as you are now'?" Sota asked.
"I've found out that over the course of the years demons have been able to blend into human society by making themselves look like humans while keeping their powers in control. I've managed to perfect this technique over the years and only appeared to you all as this since I trust the members of this house," Soishi said.
"Can you show us what you look like as a human?" Sota asked. Soishi chuckled.
"Sure." She closed her eyes and exhaled slowly. Her silver hair turned brown beginning at the roots and raced down until the brown color reached the tips. Her claws, which were folded in her lap, shrank down until they looked like harmless nails. The blue streaks on her cheeks receded into her hair so that they were barely visible. When she opened her eyes again, they were as brown as her hair, not a trace of gold to be seen.
"Wow! That's so cool! It looked like you did a magic trick!" Sota yelled.
"Sit boy!" Kagome yelled outside. A bang was heard soon after and Soishi stood up.
"What was that?" Soishi asked.
"Oh don't worry about it. Inuyasha must have said something stupid and Kagome got angry," Sota said.
"What did you just say?" Soishi asked, her eyes going wide. Sota realized what he did and covered his mouth with his hands. Soishi raced out of the room and out of the house.
"Soishi wait!" Kagome's mom called. Soishi stood at the open doorway of the house at the scene in front of her: Kagome glaring at whatever laid on the ground. Kagome walked up to the person on the ground and crouched in front of them.
"You idiot! Why can't you just listen to me and go back? I already told you I would explain when I went back!" Kagome yelled.
"I don't see the problem in explaining now!" the person yelled. He glared up at her as small pieces of rock were falling from his face.
"If I explained now I would run the risk of her hearing and the last thing we need is one more person from this time period meeting you! Besides, if her research is right then she's a descendant of Sesshomaru's and she has pictures of what you two look like, so she would recognize you immediately!" Kagome yelled.
"Kagome," Kagome's mom called. Soishi had stood there silently this whole time, taking in what she was hearing. Kagome looked over her shoulder at her mom and noticed Soishi standing there.
"S-Soishi? Is that you? What, um, what happened to your…everything I guess?" Kagome asked, attempting to stand in front of Inuyasha who was in the process of standing up.
"How is it possible?" Soishi asked. She stared at Inuyasha.
"W-what do you mean?" Kagome asked. Soishi walked up to her, shifting her attention to Kagome.
"How is he here? How is one of my ancestors here in the present time?" Soishi asked. Inuyasha stared at Soishi.
"Who the hell are you? You don't look like anyone that was in the room," Inuyasha asked.
"I am capable of changing my appearance to look like a full-blooded human. Kagome answer me," Soishi said. Inuyasha sniffed the air.
"You don't exactly look like someone that would be related to me. Although you vaguely smell like Sesshomaru," Inuyasha said.
"Shut up you idiot!" Kagome yelled.
"What did I do?"
"Sesshomaru is my ancestor, you are my great uncle. Although I don't know how many times great," Soishi explained. Kagome sighed.
"Let's go back inside. I'll explain everything, Soishi," Kagome said. Soishi nodded and they went back inside.
