Before Valkyrie

Before there had been Valkyrie, there had been Stephanie.

When she had been Stephanie, her biggest worry was that her English essay had to be due in the next day.

When she had been Stephanie, her biggest fear had been her ipod running out of charge on a long car journey.

When she had been Stephanie, there was safety; any fears were banished by her parent hugs and soothing words.

When she was Stephanie, there had been no monsters, only the ones in horror movies.

When she had been Stephanie, no one had wanted to kill her, except, perhaps, her mum, when she hadn't tidied her room.

When she had been Stephanie, her nightmares had ended when she woke up.

When she had been Stephanie, her only friends had been the characters in her books.

When she had been Stephanie, the biggest adventure was trying to find the bathroom in the middle of the night.

When she had been Stephanie, the only magic had been the street magicians who pulled rabbits from their hats.

But now she had become Valkyrie. And she had never looked back.
