It was early, that much I could tell. The man had returned and was sitting somewhere close to me, fast asleep. I could hear his deep breathing, the poor man. Did he even stop by home after work? And what required him to work at such a late hour? Mentally, I shook my head. That was beside the point. I had to do it, it had to be today. If I could open my eyes, then all my questions would be answered. Right? Banishing all my fears, I struggled to open my eyes. Slowly, if I was going to do this, it was going to have to be slowly. I started with my left eye, and after several moments I was able to just barely crack it open. The light wasn't as blinding this time. I struggled to keep it open for fear of not being able to open it again. After a while, once I was able to adjust to the new light, I began to open my eye a bit wider before doing the same thing with my right eye. Once my eyes were fully open, I had to take a minute and let them adjust. Everything was blurry and the color of everything looked unnatural. I blinked a couple of times to adjust them before things finally began to come into focus.

The room itself was nothing spectacular. It was like every other hospital room. There was a window on the wall in front of the bed, the shades were drawn but I could tell it was early by the pinkish hue coming through. There were flowers, cards, and little novelty bears sitting on the window sill. A slight groan from my right caught my attention. I turned my head ever so slightly and finally, finally, gazed upon the man that had been sitting by my bed side for God knows how long.

He was reclined in a chair, facing the window. He looked tall, taller than me anyway. He had brown hair that was currently mussed about. He looked freshly shaven, probably for last night I imagined. He looked quite handsome if I was honest. Nice cheekbones, lean looking. Though, personality was more important than looks. But looks were a nice bonus. The bags under his eyes though were worrisome. They were very prominent, and it looked like he hadn't slept in months. Why would he do that to himself?

For the longest time, I just sat and observed him. Taking in every aspect of him. Slowly, the sun rose and the noise of the hospital began to pick up. Still, I kept my gaze on him. Who was he? He looked familiar, like I should know him. But I don't know why I should know him. There was a light knock at the door that drew my attention. As I turned my head, I was greeted with the sight of a short nurse,

"Oh! You're awake!" Her voice was light and soft and her smile was bright and cheerful. She closed the distance between us, "Now, you can't talk just yet, but, how do you feel?" I wrinkled my nose a bit causing her to chuckle, "Yes, I imagine you don't feel too swell. Does your head hurt?" I thought about it, there was a slight ache but other than that it wasn't so bad, so I shrugged my shoulders, "Not a lot? Good, good. Now, do you remember who you are? What your name is?" I nodded, "Good. Do you remember who the gentleman beside you is?" I looked over at the man once more, desperately trying to remember a name or a connection but still could come up with nothing. I looked back at the nurse and gave her slight shake of my head. Her smile fell a bit, "Oh, okay dearie. Nothing to worry about. I'll go get the doctor and let him know you're awake." She glanced at the sleeping man once more, "We'll let him sleep a bit more. He hasn't slept for more than a few hours here and there since you've been here." With that, the nurse left. I turned my head to look at the man again, I should know him. By the look on the nurse's face he must be quite important to me.

Another knock drew my attention back to the door, it was the doctor. He was a younger man, older than me, but clearly not sixty. He was tall and had dark skin with kind brown eyes. He smiled at me,

"Glad to see you're awake Miss Williams." He looked at the man beside me before turning his attention back to me, "Now, I know the nurse already asked you, but before I wake him, are you sure you don't remember who he is?" Sadly, I shook my head. The doctor gave me the same look the nurse did before letting out a dejected sigh. "Alright, well, we'll work on that." The doctor quietly approached the sleeping man before he gently began to shake him. I waited with baited breath as he began to stir.

"Mhmmm, wha-?" He opened his eyes and groggily rubbed at them, "Doctor McGuire? Is, is something wrong?" The doctor smiled slightly at him,

"Not quite," He nodded towards me causing the man to look over at me. His eyes widened and his mouth fell open,

"Kyla…" His voice was soft, disbelieving even. He tried to scrambled out of his chair but the doctor stopped him,

"Now, hold on a moment."

"But-"

"David," David, so that was his name. "I'm sorry to tell you this, but she doesn't remember you."

"What?" My heart broke, he sounded so crushed. And when he looked at me again I could see just how heartbroken he was. I tried to convey how sorry I was but it just didn't do justice. "She- you don't… you don't remember me?" I tried so hard to think of anyone I knew named David and I couldn't come up with anything. Sadly, I shook my head no. Tears welled in his eyes,

"Now, don't worry David. This could be temporary. We don't know how much she remembers or has forgotten. And she can always gain her memories back. It'll just take time." The doctor was good at consoling the man. He motioned the nurse over who gently took David by the arm and helped the man out of the chair. "Now, Nurse Jameson here is going to take you outside while I check Miss Williams over. She'll help you in calling the family." I watched as the dejected man was led out the door. I could just hear the broken sobs escape him as the door shut. A tear made its way down my cheek. The doctor sighed,

"Poor man. Now, don't let this get to you okay? Like I was telling David, this could very well be a temporary thing. I have a few tests that we need to run before we test your memory okay?" I nodded. The doctor checked everything, vitals, swelling, throat, vocals before I was finally given the clear to speak, "Take it slowly, your voice hasn't been used in a while. Slowly." I licked my lips,

"What… happened?" God, my voice sounded horrible. All scratchy and horse.

"You were in a severe car crash with a lorry."

"How long?" The doctor gave me a long look, like he was debating if he should tell me or not.

"A few weeks. You had a pretty severe head injury. Your body needed to heal, it needed time." I licked my lips,

"Why… why don't I remember him? The man that was in here earlier?" The doctor sighed,

"Like I said, you had a major head injury, it was a possibility that your memory or even some of your faculties could have been effected."

"Will I get them back? My memories?"

"Yes, it's possible. It's also possible that you'll get parts of it back or none of it. And there's no saying how long it could take." I nodded, trying to process what the doctor has told me. A moment later the nurse from before came in,

"The family is on their way," She paused and glanced at me for a moment before hesitantly asking, "Would you like David to wait out here?" I thought about it, I don't know this man. He looked familiar but I had no idea who he was, or he was to me.

"No, I… I'd like to talk to him if that's okay." She nodded and backed out of the room. A moment later David entered and the doctor took his leave. David awkwardly rubbed his hands together before approaching the end of the bed. There was a long pause and he couldn't make eye contact with me. "David?" His eyes finally met mine, "I… I'm sorry. I… I'm really really sorry I don't remember you. I want to, I want to know you. I want to know who you are to me." I could see tears well in his eyes, "Would you… would you tell me, please?" He looked at me for a long time,

"Yeah, um, yeah I can tell you about me. About us. Um," He cleared his throat and dabbed at his eyes, "Forgive me I just-"

"No, no, it's okay, this is… difficult all around." He sat down in the chair next to me and sighed,

"What would you like to know?"
