Chapter One: Prologue

Kurt regained consciousness slowly, each movement causing him confusion and immense pain. Initially pulling him from his haze was the familiar snoring of his dad who was sitting in what looked to be the most uncomfortable chair, his hand loosely grasping Kurt's in his sleep.

The light was the next to rouse him, as well as blind him, forcing him to immediately shut his eyes again.

Opening his eyes more slowly this time he registered the splitting headache beginning to form while taking in his surroundings. He was in a hospital room. Cream walls surrounded him, various balloons and cards filling every surface the small room had available.

Finally getting his bearings Kurt became short of breath, not understanding how he had got here, an array of tubes inserted into his arm restricting his movement a great deal.

Being a light sleeper it didn't take long for the movements to wake Burt, his gaze immediately falling on Kurt, tears forming in his eyes.

"Kurt, you're awake! How do you feel? Does anything hurt? I can't believe you went driving in that weather. I told you- I'm so glad you're alri-"

Kurt, winced at the volume and velocity his Dad was speaking.

"Dad…DAD! What happened? Why am I in the hospital?"

Burt let out a long sigh raising his eyes to meet Kurt's, the pain and exhaustion clearly written across his face.

"Buddy you were in an accident. When you didn't come home we called Blaine to see where you were, he said you'd left half an hour ago and should have been home by then. That was when we got the call. It was the hospital saying that you'd just been rushed to the Emergency Room. You swerved into oncoming traffic, and no it wasn't your fault," Burt explained, already seeing the horror in his son's face at the thought of causing potential harm to others, "the roads were just too slippery. When they found you, you were in pretty bad shape. Broken ribs, dislocated shoulder, some pretty nasty bruising and a severe concussion. The paramedics told me all you kept saying was 'Blaine, Blaine' until you lost consciousness. You've been out for 3 days. They were so worried you'd suffered brain damage, it's been hell not knowing what we'd discover when you woke up but Oh God Kurt I'm so relieved. Hell everyone is going to be so relieved, we've all been worried sick."

Kurt sat through the whole explanation in a shocked silence, until with a blank face he asked his dad in a whisper.

"Dad…Who's Blaine?"
