All sidekicks have the same goal, to learn and grow with help from their mentors to one day take up their teacher's mantles.

But the path to becoming a superhero is hard and for most sidekicks the goal of taking up the mantle of their mentor will never happen.

Heroes become too set in their ways to retire, sidekicks end up yearning for their own identities and somewhere along the line the tradition is never finished.

Wally West was a rare form of sidekick as Kid Flash because his mentor, the Flash, was not only his friend and teacher but his Uncle as well. He not only idolized Barry Allen for being a hero but loved him for being himself.

Barry Allen was good natured, friendly and always willing to do whatever it took to protect anyone he could and he eventually proved how far he was willing to go to protect the world and his family.

Nobody ever thought that five years from Wally's fifteenth birthday Barry Allen would be forced to sacrifice his life to save not only the world but all of existence.

Nobody would ever believe that in five years, Wally West would shed his Kid Flash costume and take up the title of the Flash, fastest man alive.

Nobody would think that Wally, still fresh and inexperienced in many superheroes' eyes, would be welcomed into the JLA by not only Superman but Batman as well.

And Wally would never think that one day people would begin to forget about his Uncle Barry, that people would forget the sacrifice he made or that people would start to believe he was the original Flash.

But all of these things were going to happen because Barry Allen was doomed to die, Wally West was destined to become the Flash and nobody in their right mind expected either.
