so write it down in lover's blood.

books & love & endless summers.

ii.

Derrick doesn't think to talk much. She does that for him.

iii.

Kristen Gregory is enigma.

iv.

Kristen likes the burning sensation that comes with rubbing salt on the tip of her tongue.

She likes reading novels written two hundred years ago.

And she admits to enjoying sitting in her room and drowning herself in the emotion of music more than playing soccer.

Derrick still l...ikes her.

v.

Derrick lays on his unmade bed, fingers digging into the threads of his bedspread, and he lets the sun shining through the window soak him into an oblivion.

He thinks of her until it hurts.

He thinks of her until he can't anymore.

vi.

They're kissing on his bed on a Tuesday afternoon.

She nibbles at his bottom lip and he plunges his tongue into the space between her lips.

She gasps and moans and Derrick, Derrick is lost.

viii.

She tells him to meet her in the water.

He goes of course, because she's Kristen and she's beautiful and she's got him wrapped around her red nail polished finger.

Between the saltwater kisses and the pruned intertwined fingers, he whispers 'I love you' into her damp, warm neck.

She stays quiet.

He thinks she doesn't hear him, or maybe she just pretends not to.

ix.

They watch movies on Saturdays.

His phone starts ringing incessantly during one of those days— she doesn't recall which one.

She does recall the look in his eyes, before he presses ignore.

It's Massie.

He doesn't have to tell her.

x.

They play soccer in his backyard when they get tired of playing scrabble— she's way too smart, and he's way too "academically challenged."

She falls dribbling the ball to his beaten up net.

He runs to her; asks her if she's okay.

She's blushing really, really hard and he thinks it's the most adorable thing he's ever seen.

He kisses her knee "better" after and she laughs.

xi.

Sometimes he thinks, she might be the one.

xii.

Massie comes back from Paris on a Saturday.

He thinks that isn't fair.

Saturday is only for him and Kristen and endlessendlesseendless movies.

xiii.

Kristen sleeps over on a Wednesday.

And Derrick, he doesn't think he'll ever be the same.

xiv.

Kristen ignores his calls for the next week.

He sees her at the mall, sitting on a bench by the fountain.

And he blows up.

He's screaming, screaming at her; telling her she can't do stuff like that. He was worried sick.

She gives him the most heartbreaking look he's ever seen, and he immediately wants to wrap her up in his arms.

Someone beats him to it.

Except he's the one being wrapped up in someone's arms.

And they're Massie's.

xv.

It's not right, she tells him. She's not like Alicia and Dylan and she just can't do this to Massie anymore.

xvi.

He lays on the wooden floor of his bedroom, slams his knuckles into the wall beside him until they're red with blood, and cries.

xvii.

It's the first day of senior year, and it turns out, there's no such thing as endless summers.

And love only comes in unrequited doses.
