A/N: Quick drabble I did last night dedicated to Kingchips on tumblr. c: More Dick and Damian. You'll probably be getting a lot of them for me as I angst about the Reboot.

The silence between them is unbearably tense. Damian's mouth is drawn in a tight, thin line, and he seems determined not to breathe a word during their patrol. And Dick dares not say anything because his partner is different than usual tonight. Delicate, like glass. Like he'll break if he says a single word.

But he doesn't want it to end like this. He doesn't want it to end on such a bad note.

As they swing to the next building, Dick reaches out. Takes Damian's hand.

They land, and Damian looks at their hands, then at him.

"Don't be sad," Dick murmurs, just loud enough to be heard over the city noises. "It's such a beautiful night. I don't want you to be sad."

Damian still doesn't say anything, and Dick can't tell what he's thinking because the mask is covering those expressive blue eyes of his.

Dick tilts his head back, looking at the early night sky, searching desperately and hoping he's not too late. He breathes a sigh of relief when he spots what he's looking for.

"Look," he says, glancing back at Damian, "the first star. Make a wish."

Damian seems confused, so Dick explains, "If you make a wish on the first star you see, your wish is supposed to come true."

He turns his head back to the stars, and repeats the old rhyme from his childhood. "Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight; I wish I may, I wish I might, have this wish I have tonight." Then he closes his eyes, channeling all his emotions into a single wish.

When he looks to Damian again, he is facing the sky, the lenses of his mask narrowed to slits. A moment later, he drops his head and lets out a shaky breath. For the first time that night, he speaks, and his voice is uncharacteristically quiet.

"What did you wish for?"

Dick shakes his head at him, smiling sadly. "If...if I tell you, it won't come true."

Damian's small hand closes around his and grips tightly.

Dick has to take a steadying breath to regain his composure, and his wish echoes once more in his head.

Please don't make me let this child go; don't make me say goodbye.
