Warzone

"Hold me."

He did as she said; wrapping his arms around her trembling frame, pulling her as close as he could, the scent of her engulfing his senses. As she cried onto his shirt, he couldn't imagine being without her, couldn't imagine waking up without her within arms' reach.

"I thought. I thought that, that you were-" She chokes on the final word, unable to utter it.

His arms tightened around her, as he whispered soothing noises to her. He knows what she thought, knows that she thought her worst fear had come true. As he holds his wife, he wonders why they do it. Why they let themselves love this much, when all it takes in one spell to unravel it all. How do they allow themselves to care this much, when every day they wade out into the battlefield, thoroughly unprepared for what awaited them. As his wife shook in his arms, clutching at him as though making sure he was real, all he knew was that he would always love her. That he would always risk loving her.
