"Edward?" I asked, confused. I opened my truck door because that window didn't open. He casually leaned against the now open door.
"I couldn't help noticing that you were having car troubles. Would you like me to drive you to the hospital?"
I was lost for words. Edward Cullen was offering me a ride in his car?
"Um…" What was I supposed to say? Of course I wanted to go in his car, but I didn't want to be a burden to him. I'm sure he had some kind of reason as to why he was still here.
"Of course, you don't have to. It's just that I was going to go to the hospital anyway…"
"If it wouldn't be too much trouble…"
A wide smile spread cross his perfect face. I blushed.
"Come one, or you'll miss your appointment." He smirked.
I leaned over to grab my bag. Edward moved out of the way so I could hop out of the car. I slung my bag over one shoulder, forgetting about how heavy it was with my books in it.
"I'll take it, Bella." He said, putting his hand out for my bag. Without thinking about it, I gave it to him. My shoulder immediately felt relief. I walked around to the passenger side of his car, and just as I was about to open the door, he appeared out of nowhere and opened it for me.
"Allow me." His eyes bore into mine, momentarily dazzling me.
"Thank you." I got into the car and buckled my seat belt. I could smell a really sweet smell, I looked around for a car air freshener, or something of that nature, but I couldn't see anything. Maybe he was wearing some kind of scent? Whatever it was, it smelled amazing.
Edward got into the car and threw my bag in the back seat. He pulled out his phone and dialled a number.
I listened to him. He was calling someone to come and get my car. He hung up his phone and turned towards me.
"Would you like to go straight to the hospital or would you like to go home first?"
"Straight to the hospital, please." I didn't want him stopping by my house, but I wasn't really sure why.
The put the keys in ignition and the quiet, smooth sounds were strange compared to my trucks rumble.
"So… how are things?" I mumbled, trying to fill the awkward silence.
"Things are good." He smiled. "They are very good actually."
His smile was contagious. "That's good to hear."
Way to fill a conversation, Bella.
I looked around in his car; it was so neat and tidy that I was almost afraid to touch anything. I saw a small red box right in front of me, slightly bigger than the ones that earrings come in. I wondered what was inside, but didn't ask because I feared that I would sound rude or nosy.
I looked at his radio and noticed a huge pile of CDs.
"You have so much music." I stated quietly. "Would you mind if I had a look?"
"Go ahead. I'm not sure you would recognize any of the artists, though."
"What were you listening to?" I pressed play on his CD player. It took me a while to recognize the music, but after a few seconds, I got it.
"Clair De Lune?" I asked, surprised. I didn't think anyone my age knew any classical music; but I guess Edward never seized to surprise me.
"You… know Debussy?" He asked me. I couldn't tell who sounded more surprised out of the two of us.
"I only know some. My mother used to play a lot of classical music around the house. I only know my favourites."
He paused for a moment. And for the first time since driving he looked at me. "It's one of my favourites too."
My breath came in in a shaky gasp, and my heart rate accelerated. He still didn't look at the road, he just stared at me.
I was the one to break the stare - if that's what I should call it – because I was worried about the fact that he was supposed to be driving. I looked out my window to see how close to the hospital we were.
I couldn't see anything. Everything was so blurred that all I could see was green.
"Edward, slow down!"
He laughed. "Bella, relax. I drive like this all the time."
"You have to be driving… ten times faster than the speed limit!" My father was a policeman, I was taught to obey the road rules.
"Bella, I've never once gotten a ticket. I'm a safe driver." He said coolly.
"I beg to differ." I tried my best to distract myself from the death roller-coaster that I was in. I thought of one thing in particular that would avert my attention.
"Edward, what's in that red box?"
He looked at the box and seemed to think for a moment. "Take a look. If you'd like that is."
"Are you sure?" I bit my lip.
"I'm sure."
I grabbed the box and opened it. I saw a single fish scale. They seemed familiar somehow. The colour was the same orang-ish colour as my tail.
"Where did you find this?" I asked - my voice was shaky.
"Just near my house."
"Ah…"
Oh God. Could this be from my tail? What if he did tests on it? What if he found out about mermaids? What if he finds out that when they dry, it won't be a scale, it would just be skin?
The scale changed to red in my palm. I have never had a scale that has changed colour; but I was sure that that was proof that it was mine.
My thoughts were interrupted when I felt a sudden jerk; He stopped the car.
"Isn't it strange?" He looked at the scale. "It is unlike anything I had seen before."
I put the scale back in the box. "Doctor Appointment for one." I mumbled, opening the car door.
"I'll come with you; I need to speak to Carlisle, anyway."

I had already changed into one of the hospital night gowns when Carlisle walked in.
"How is your leg, Bella?" Dr Cullen asked.
"It's fine." I thought for a second, finally realizing something. "It hasn't been hurting… at all."
"That means it must be healing fast." He put on some gloves. "I'm just going to undo the bandage and properly clean the wound."
"Um…Ok."
"It might hurt a little bit if I need to pull something out."
I didn't want to dwell on the fact that he was taking things out of a huge cut on my leg.
He grabbed some tweezers and began pulling. I didn't know what he was pulling out because I refused to look.
It began to sting, and when it hurt enough I balled my hand into a fist. I suddenly noticed that my hand was on my necklace. Please stop hurting, my mind pleaded.
My leg actually felt better. I easily took in a deep breath in and then out.
Hang on, my leg felt better when I held my necklace and I wished that it would stop hurting.
No, it's probably just a coincidence.
…Or is it?
I couldn't continue my train of thought because Carlisle said something that made my heart stop.
"I'm just going to need to wet it down a bit before I put on a new bandage."
No. no, no, no, no! I can't let water touch me -unless I want to grow a tail right here!
"It's already pretty clean; you don't need to do that. It's clean. Yeah, it's really clean. You don't need to do anything else." Bella, you sound crazy.
"It's just a routine thing. I have to wipe off the new blood."
I was instantly dizzy with the mention of that word.
Maybe I could test the necklace.
I put my hand on the necklace and closed my eyes. I wish Carlisle didn't have to clean the wound.
I looked at Carlisle, who seemed confused. "I'm just… afraid of water… and blood… together."
I felt a tingly feeling on my leg. I looked down and saw my skin around the skin rise ever so slightly. It looked like I was getting severely burnt and my skin was peeling. The skin on my cut changed to my normal skin colour and the skin around it covered it up.
Holy Cow!
"Carlisle," My brain searched for the right thing to say. "You were right, it is healing quickly."
"I guess we're done here." Carlisle walked so quickly out of the room that I didn't know he was leaving until he opened the door.
I knew that Carlisle knew something was up.
And I knew something was up with the Cullens.
