Sagara Sanosuke worried. It was not something he did often. In fact, it was something he regularly went to great lengths to avoid, usually with the aid of a sake flask. This time, however, Sanosuke couldn't escape the object of his concern through liquor or any other means. Nor did he care to.

Sitting cross-legged in the dark stillness of the quiet room, he watched Kenshin sleep. The small redheaded man looked almost younger and somehow even more world-weary than he did when conscious. It was a decidedly strange combination of impressions that only added to Sano's unease.

As his eyes traveled over the pale and scarred planes of his friend's face, Megumi's words echoed through his thoughts. //He can't keep doing this to himself! Every battle takes more out of him, and soon there simply won't be anything left.//

Leaning back against the wall, Sanosuke muttered through the habitual fish-spine dangling from his lips, "And he does it all for us, for people he's never even met. Just 'cause he wants everyone to have peace and happiness." He sighed, "it may be a stupid philosophy to live by, but I sure as hell admire him for it."

It was almost time for Karou's shift, Sano noted, tossing the fishbone into a waste basket. Scooting across the tatami mat, Sanosuke gently shook Kenshin awake. The usually alert lavender eyes were cloudy, had difficulty focusing. "Oi, Kenshin. How do you feel?"

Kenshin smiled, his split lips bleeding anew. "Better," he croaked out. It pained Sano to hear the usually smooth voice so hoarse.

Pulling aside the covers and parting Kenshin's gi, Sanosuke revealed the bandaged expanse of the rurouni's torso. Using the knife on the tray beside the futon, Sano cut away the blood-stained bandages. Kenshin said nothing as his tall friend cleaned and redressed his wounds, careful not to break any of the neat stitches, and spreading a cool salve on the burns.

"Thank you very much," Kenshin murmured, already drifting back off to sleep. Aside from the pain and exhaustion, Megumi's drugs were still in effect.

"You're welcome," Sanosuke replied, and still he worried.
