I do not own Teen Titans.

...

Second

She would always be second. The second sister. The second in line to the throne. The second female member of the team. The second crush. The second kiss. The second love. Starfire would never be first.

She was the second sister in the And'r dynasty. By the time the ladies in waiting had to brush her hair they would be bored and sick of picking out knots. The tutors would sigh and fidget as they went through their lessons for a second time. The cooks in the kitchens would mutter in annoyance when they were begged for cookies again. The maids would whisper to each other as they had to clean up after a child once more.

When Komand'r had left Tamaran as a traitor, Koriand'r was the second in line to the throne after their brother. Once again, the tutors would tut as they had to repeat lessons for now the third time, training the young girl skills that they had never anticipated her needing. Ryand'r would bait her and show off the abilities that she was trying to catch up with. Their parents would look at her with sad eyes and she would know that they were wishing she was Komand'r.

As part of the Teen Titans, she was always second behind Raven. Second behind her in command though Starfire's own strategic and battle skills far exceeded Raven's, the aliens apparent innocence and naivety creating the wrong impression about her. Whenever the team would be brainstorming her ideas would come second to the dark witch's. Raven and Starfire, not Starfire and Raven.

She was the second crush for the boys. Though she was still flattered that any of the male members of the team found her attractive, it was as though she was a consolation prize. Beast Boy would playfully flirt with her, touches to her arm and cheeky winks, but only after he had been shot down by Raven. She would go on little dates with Cyborg when he was sad that he couldn't see Sarah due to her work and he would call her pet names as they ate and then danced to cheesy Latino pop. Robin would talk about Batgirl – how brave she was, how hard she had worked as they swung through Gotham City at nights. He would get a little bit starry eyed and would smile secretly sometimes when his communicator would go off before disappearing off to answer it privately. But then he would grab Starfire's hand and pull her off to the roof to watch the sunset and tell her how much he cared for her. And then he would smile, the same way he would smile when Batgirl called.

But then she was Robin's second kiss. Being his second kiss was both disappointing and wonderful. To know that he had ran his fingers through Batgirl's hair and panted against her mouth first had made Starfire sad for a moment, but being led through her first kiss had made her body tingle and her heart flutter. He had not been anxious in his movements, but so confident that she could only melt against him.

Finally, she was his second love. Starfire was Robin's second love. The declarations of feelings and the slow kisses had eventually led to private caresses and gasped proclamations of love and she had smiled. But then he would compare his feelings to those he had felt for Batgirl, and he would tell her about them with a sad smile before pulling Starfire towards him for another kiss. The alien girl had realised then that Batgirl had been his very first love and that she was now his second.

She supposed being second wasn't always the worst thing.
