written for Lady Eleanor Boleyn's challenge on the forum Bellatrix Lestrange: The Dark Lord's Most Faithul

the challenge prompt is as follows: Traditions: We all know about the traditions that J.K's told us about – like giving a wizard a watch on his seventeenth birthday, but there must be hundreds more, right? And what about the Muggleborns? Wouldn't they bring Muggle traditions to Hogwarts. The challenge for this fortnight is to write a story of more or less a multiple of 1oo words involving one or more characters and a tradition.

bachelor party: a party held for a man shortly before he enters marriage to celebrate his "last night of freedom" with his male friends (also known as stag night, bull's party, buck's night)

John Middleton was Arthur's best friend. He wasn't sure what wizards did to celebrate a fast-approaching marriage but he knew what the Muggle tradition was and decided that, seeing as he was best man, he should go about making arrangements to hold to that tradition. And so it came to be that, on a Thursday night, two days before the wedding, John Middleton and Arthur Weasley were on their way to a Muggle gentlemen's club.

John had been to a bachelor party with his (now married) Muggle friend. It had been a long night of fun, with a constant stream of booze, loud music, bouncing lights, and women shimming down poles. He was sure Arthur, with his fascination of Muggle behaviour, would appreciate and enjoy this Muggle custom.

Well, Arthur certainly did enjoy himself. But not in the way John expected.

"Incredible! Look at all the lights in this place! The walls must be loaded with elyktricicy!"

"Wow! Look, John, it's a fellytone, just like you were telling me about!"

"Oh, is that Muggle money? Let me see!"

"You went to a beauty saylong to get your hair that colour, didn't you? Tell me, do the chairs actually have to be raised and lowered manually?"

"John, John! I asked the barkeep for a drink – well, he didn't have anything but in the end he just mixed me this, and it's not too bad really - and he had to mix it all on his own. Record time, too! Faster than going to a regular bar!"

"Oh look! Incredible! I just found where the lights are attached into the wall. They have these cords, see, and you put them into the wall, into elykrike sockets – oh, well, you know, I suppose. It's amazing!"

"John! You won't believe it, someone actually has to play the music! Yes! Look, there he is, the whatchamacallit, disc player and he is actually mixing! Look at him work! Do you think we can take a closer look?"

John sighed. After an hour and a half of trying to keep Arthur's attention on the women, he gave up and just made sure he didn't attempt to stick his finger into an electric socket.

Mental note to self: never take a wizard to a Muggle tradition.
