The Promises We Keep

If Nami had any self-control left it was all going towards restraining herself from pulling out all of her long orange hair. She had been locked up in this operating room for the last 24 hours and wasn't getting any closer in finding a solid escape route out. Scathing every last inch of this room, Nami could not even find a sliver of optimism when it came to breaking out of this place. No loose bolt to unhinge. No vent to wiggle through. Not even one goddamn lock to pick. The only door in the room was locked from the outside and it was so tightly sealed there was no chance of her busting it through.

It was driving her absolutely positively MAD.

Curling herself in corner, Nami reminded herself to stay calm. No matter how dire things looked, Luffy would come for her. She didn't know how but her captain had the ability to turn an impossible situation into a possible one. Even when this submarine sunk deeper and darker into the depths of the ocean she knew Luffy would find her and take her back home to the Sunny.

Nami could feel tears of frustration pinching at the corner of her eyes. She missed her crew. She missed her night talks with Robin. They would always calm her down after a long day chasing the boys around the Sunny. She missed having heartfelt laughs with Usopp and giving comforting hugs to Chopper whenever Luffy and Zoro were stressing him out. She even missed those idiots too. Sanji did always make her the best drinks and desserts. Franky was always excited in her trying out his newest addition to the ship. Even Brook's music could relax her from time to time. And as much as Luffy and Zoro gave her a throbbing headache she knew she would always be safe with them by her side. Letting out a deep sigh Nami finally gave into the tears.

I want to go home.

I want to be back on the Sunny.

Please. Please find me.

Rubbing the wet tears off her checks she finally gave into her smile.

Luffy. Everyone. I know you will find me.

And when you do, this bastard doctor won't stand a chance.

Nami had all the faith in the world in her crew. Yes they would find her and that was that. The only thing that would hold them back is if they did something silly... like allow Zoro navigate the ship!

"There's no way Luffy would do something that idiotic," Nami reassured herself, "My crew wouldn't allow a man with such poor sense of direction steer the Sunny! No! Impossible!"

She tried to laugh it off but quickly found herself choking on her own words. Her captain was known to make the impossible possible. No matter how fucking stupid it was.

Luffy if I find out Zoro was navigating our ship…and you still manage to find me, your dumb ass won't stand a chance.

Finally! Law could finally retreat to his room after dealing with such a hectic day. And calling it hectic was just putting it mildly. He couldn't remember the last time a woman giving him this much trouble. He was pretty sure he couldn't remember because he had never dealt with a woman like her…ever. As tempted as he was to just throw her off his ship and called it a day, Law knew he would a step closer to his goal with her than without her.

Looking at the scattered loots of treasure around his room Law couldn't help but frown. After she almost escaped with all his findings he couldn't let her off that easy.

Unforgivable.

Law rarely kept secrets from his crew. But even they didn't know what weight these stolen goods had carried. Or should he say stolen good. There was one thing hidden in these bags he was really searching for. The one thing that actually got him in this fine mess to begin with. Creating a room around the bags, Law concentrated in scanning each individual sack carefully with his powers.

As much as he hated to admit it, the woman was right about his capture. He got careless.

Getting capture was not on Law's agenda at all when it came to searching Angre's ship for this object. Sure the doctor was confident he would've been able to free himself either way but even he had to admit that the woman's assistance save him some valuable time. Too bad the woman's greed was quickly wiping away any last ounce of gratitude he had for her.

"Unforgivable," Law whispered to himself as he started to scan the sixth bag of treasure.

The search was over. He finally found it. Taking a deep breath he quickly untangled the loose knot wrapped around the bag and pulled the opening apart. Although this piece was quite small in comparison to the other items tucked within the bag, its presence was unmistakable to Law. Dipping his hand deep into the bag he could feel his heart beating rapidly. The beats pulsing as he wrapped his fingers around this hidden treasure. He gave his knuckles a quick squeeze as he felt its smooth surface pressed against his palm.

Law closed his eyes in hopes to calm all the hot air building in his chest. He found it. After all this time he finally found it.

Sixteen years earlier

"Law! Law are you in here?"

Law could hear his little sister calling for him from the hall. He was fooling around his father's doctor office looking for all kinds of medical supplies to steal and tinker with. He puffed his cheeks and hoped Lami wasn't going to tattle on him. He was only stealing these items for research. And he wasn't really stealing them… more like borrowing them and returning them back in a few years.

Lami's eyes lit up when she found Law sitting in her father's office chair. Even thought her older brother was threatening her with his dark stares she couldn't help but smile and laugh at him.

"There you are! Father is looking for you! He just came back from a meeting with the World Government and he said he's brought back something very cool for us to look at."

Law's ears perked up to the news. If his father was excited to show this thing to him and Lami it must be something special!

Law quickly jumped off the chair and rushed passed his little sister.

"Hurry up Lami or I'll make dad show it to me first," teased Law as he ran down the hall.

"No fair, Law," cried Lami as hurried behind her brother. "After I went out of my way to find you too!"

Law let out taunting snicker as he stuck out his tongue at his little sister. Lami was too easy to tease sometimes. He'll have toughen her up one of these days. He was her older brother after all.

They found their father sitting in the living room with their mother. Law had never seen his father so excited and his mother so proud.

"Dad! Dad! Lami told me you brought back something really cool from your visit with the World Government!"

"And don't you dare show it to him without me," yelled Lami as she entered the room shortly after.

Their father let out a cheerful laugh as he stood up from his seat. He had one of his arms hidden behind his back. Law was sure his father was hiding this very cool thing in that hidden left arm.

"Don't worry Lami, I'm going to show it to you too," reassured their father as he gave his daughter a gentle pat on the head. "But honestly I believe this thing would be more of your brother's interest than your own."

Lami crossed her arms and gave her father one of her best pouts.

"No fair!"

Law couldn't help but stick out his tongue again to tease his little sister. He quickly bit his tongue when he noticed his mother's dark stare. His mother could be a scary woman from time to time and he did not want to get on her bad side.

"Do you two remember why I was called by the World Government in the first place?"

"They wanted to ask you about treating patients with Amber Lead Syndrome," shouted Lami as she jumped up and down victoriously.

"That's right! Very good, Lami," chuckled their father as he gave his daughter another loving head pat.

"I was going to say that," grumbled Law under his breath. He was going to stick out his tongue at her again but he could still feel that deadly stare coming from his mother. If he want live long enough to see this amazing prize he knew he would have to hold back. He would just have to tease Lami later. He was his big brother after all.

"As an award for sharing all my medical findings they gave me this," beamed their father as he brought his left arm forward and slowly opening the palm of his hand.

Law's jaw dropped and his eyes sparkled. Lami, as her father predicted, looked at item nonchalantly as she made her way to sit beside their mother. Clearly she wasn't as interested in the item as her older brother.

"Dad, is that what I think it is!" squealed the young boy.

His father let out another delighted chuckle has his pat the top of his son's fur hat.

"Yes it is, Law," confirmed his father as he twirled the coin between his thumb and index finger, "It's a Flevance commemorative coin to celebrate our city's medical research of Amber Lead!"

Law was grinning from ear to ear. No wonder his father was so excited to show this coin to him. Law and his father partook on the hobby of coin collecting together and it was one of the cornerstones of their relationship. His father took pride in sharing his great knowledge of being a seasoned coin collector and Law could go on for hours and hours eagerly listening to his father discussions about the world of rare coin collecting. And here his father was holding one of the most rarest coins of his grand city of Flevance. This kids at school were going to be super jealous when he told them this news on Monday morning!

"And other than myself, they only awarded two other doctors with this type of coin!"

"No way, dad," shouted Law as he jumped up and down. "That's so COOL!"

"I know right?! And you know what the best part is?"

"What, dad?"

Law stopped jumping when his father kneeled down beside him. His father couldn't help but smile proudly once more as pulled his son's hand open and gently placed the coin in his hand.

"That one day you'll be a great doctor and this coin will belong to you."

Law had to remind himself to breath as he pulled his arm out from the bag. His knuckles were shaking as he slowly opened his fingers. The coin looked just like it had 16 years ago. Law was met once again with the words "Flevance Award of Medical Research" as he read the rim of the coin. His city's once prized white castle was etched in the coin's silver. He had no doubts that amber lead itself was laced within the silver of the coin. Yet here he was tightly holding this deadly coin in the palm of his hand.

Never had something brought him so much joy.

Never had something brought him so much despair.

Law knew this coin was a falsehood. Shortly after his father's visit with the World Government his whole city was wiped out and burned down to the ground. He knew now that the World Government was never interested in his father research to begin with. They could careless on how dedicated his father was in treating those impacted by Amber Lead Syndrome. No. All the Government cared about was the confirmation that Amber Lead Syndrome did in fact exist and how they now had grounds to perform a great genocide on the people of Flevance.

Holding this coin meant inviting back a dark part of his history. A history Law dreaded to reunite with. Part of him wanted to hurl this coin to depths of the sea where it would be long-forgotten.

But the other part….the other part wanted to relive a joyous moment when his father placed that coin so proudly in his hand.

Law squeezed the coin hard into his palm and cough back a sob.

He had kept his father's promise.

He was a great doctor and now this coin belonged to him.

*cries*
