Summary: AU: When young Elphaba can't sleep one night, Frex reads her a story, realizing how special his daughter really is. One-shot. Bookverse.
Genre: General/None
Rating: K
"Daddy!" five-year-old Elphaba called, hugging her doll closer to her. Her mother was busy taking care of newborn Nessarose and her father was home for a short time before he had to leave.
"What is it?" Frex asked.
"I can't sleep. Can you read me a story?" Elphaba questioned. Frex nodded and went to Elphaba's bookshelf in the corner of her room.
"Is The Greenface Monster okay?" Frex inquired. Elphaba nodded and propped herself on her elbows. Frex sat down on the chair next to Elphaba's bed and read her the story.
"One day, in Mrs. Violet's classroom, Ms. Sully called my name. When I heard my name, my stomach turned oozy and I felt like I was about to puke. I noticed that my body was changing and I could not stop it no matter how hard I tried. Everyone said that I looked really weird." Frex read, showing Elphaba the illustrations. He then turned the page.
"Maybe it was that weird soup I had for lunch.
I went to Mrs. Violet's closet and looked in the mirror. I could see eight eyes on the top of my head. My face was turning green. The green started on my nose and then spread everywhere. My body was turning purple. I felt angry and mean. I began to growl and bare my teeth.
The kids screamed and ran out of the classroom." Frex continued to read. Elphaba was now on her father's lap, looking at the illustrations and asking questions here and there.
Mrs. Violet called the principal and asked him to come to her room immediately. When he got there, Mrs. Violet was standing on her desk and Mr. Rico couldn't find me anywhere. Mrs. Violet said, "You are not going to believe what happened to Tara Donovan!"
Then Mrs. Violet fainted.
Mr. Rico went down the hall way heading for his office. On his way, he ran into the greenface monster. He ran from the monster and made it back to his office.
He quickly pulled the fire alarm and all the children and adults left the building. All the children thought there was a fire except for the fourth graders from Mrs. Violet's room. They knew that I had turned into a monster.
When all the children were out of the school, Mr. Rico began to look for me. I had made my way to the cafeteria to see what was in the soup. Mr. Rico was coming to the cafeteria. I hid behind one of the tables. When he couldn't find me, he shrugged and continued his search.
I went to find that soup. When I went into the kitchen, I found one of the cafeteria ladies. She said, "Ah Hah! My magic potion really did work!" This made me furious. I tried to bite one of her feet, but all of a sudden I felt my body changing. I began to feel like normal again. The cafeteria lady said, "See my potion that I put in your soup, Tara, really did work. It was supposed to last an hour and it did!" Frex continued reading, noticing that Elphaba's eyelids were drooping, so he placed her in her bed and read the last couple pages to her.
"I went running outside to tell everyone that I was no longer a monster and to tell them about the cafeteria lady. We all ran back into the school to find her but she was no where to be found.
The end." Frex finished, kissing his daughter on the forehead. He then blew out the candle on her bedside table and exited her room.
It was then that Frex realized that his daughter was special in her own special way.
