The three of them finally made it to Traverse Town. It was a large town that was divided into three districts. The scenery was very reminiscent of Radiant garden the differences being there were no gardens and it looked more of a middle class town than where the noble lived. A heavy rain had settled in and they needed to find shelter fast. Ventus and Vanitas stood under an overhang of a nearby restaurant while Sora went in search of lodgings.

"How are you holding out?" Vanitas asked Ventus who looked pale.

"I'm alright, just tired." Ventus replied.

Ventus was cold and wet not to mention tired and hungry but, they all were. They had been traveling for days on end it seemed. Vanitas pulled Ventus to him and held him close unconsciously trying to make Ventus feel better.

Sora pulled his hood over his head a bit more. The rain seemed to have gotten harder since he left his brother and Ventus. He had wished more than anything that things would have turned out a little better but just being alive and not in jail after what they had done was better than nothing. For now the task at hand was to find somewhere safe to stay until they could find permanent residence somewhere in Traverse Town. A streak of lighting lit up the sky and a loud clap of thunder followed shortly after. With that Sora ran into the nearest shop he could find. He was no coward and his courage in going with his brother proved that but still, lighting was lighting and if hit it could be disastrous and Sora wasn't stupid either.

"Hey there, What can I do for ya?"

Sora looked around. It was a small shop that sold a collection of things. The store keeper who had just spoken was a tall well built man with blonde spiked up hair that was held in place by a pair of goggles.

"Hey kiddo, you new around here?" The man asked.

"Yes, I-I'm trying to look for a place to stay the night. I have two others in my company. I had to take shelter here for the meantime until this storm calms." Sora replied.

Sora then realized what the man had just called him. "I'm not a kid and the names Sora." Sora said a little annoyed at the lack of etiquette.

"Alright, simmer down. So your looking for a place to stay eh? I'll look out for ya and put in a good word for you. And where are these companions of yours anyway? Didn't leave them out in the rain did ya?" The shopkeeper asked.

"You'd really do that? Help us out? But you just met me. Oh my friend and brother are safe for now. They've taken shelter near one of the restaurants. By the way, by what name shall I call you good sir?" Sora asked reverting back to his etiquette.

The shopkeeper laughed heartily. "good sir?" He chuckled again quite amused at the boys proper speech pattern.

"The names Cid. Why don't you bring your companions here and you may stay the night at my place. It's quite late. Tomorrow I'll help you start your search. Besides what kind of man am I if I leave a kid like you and by the sound of it two more kids out on the street to get robbed or sick from all this rain." Cid said.

"Oh thank you Sir!" Sora said and dashed out the door.

Sora ran back to where Vanitas and Ventus were as carefully as possible. "Vanitas! Ventus! I've found a place to stay for the night." Sora said as he came up to them. Ventus was leaning against one of the beams supporting the overhang with Vanitas beside him making sure that if he were to drift off, he wouldn't fall.

"Good then lets get moving." Vanitas said.

The next morning as promised Cid asked a few of his well known costumers if there were any places that three travelers might stay.

The three of them were also out looking for a place to stay. They were in the second district which was where the majority of homes were versus business's. So far they were having no luck. When it was around dinner time they headed back to Cid's shop.

"Hey there kiddo's, don't look so down. I think I might have found a place for you." Cid said as Sora Ventus and Vanitas walked in.

Sora saw two familiar people and his face lit up. "Mr. and Mrs. Kriess!" he said excitedly.

"Hello there Sora, Vanitas and who might this young lad be?" Serah asked.

"This is Ventus." Sora replied quite happy to see them.

Vanitas huffed and folded his arms. "leave it to my idiot brother." He thought to himself.

"Cid tells us that you need a place to stay." Noel said.

"Yes, we are currently looking but so far we've had no luck." Sora replied.

"Why don't you young dears come and stay with us. I don't know what kind of situation you have been in to not be with your parents but we can discuss that later." Serah said.

"If you send us back to those people then I will not have us go with you. Even if we must live on the streets for a while. I am sure that Sora will tell you what has happened, for I will not and if you have any intentions of sending us back then we will disappear." Vanitas said rather rudely.

"whoa, slow down there Vanitas. We're not heartless you know." Noel said.

So with the dissatisfaction of Vanitas the three of them left with Noel and Serah.

Noel and Serah Kreiss were nobles but they weren't your average nobles. They stood for the little man, the everyday worker who didn't have much and that is why Traverse Town was so successful and not bothered by the King or his subjects. Their home was a smaller mansion In the third district. It had a cozy look to it and not at all intimidating like other homes of the wealthy. A few servents came out to great their masters and took the trio's horses and luggage with them. Yuffie one of the maids who worked there greeted them at the door.

"welcome back!" She said cheerfully.

"Thank you Yuffie. Would you tell Leon to get supper ready and tell him to prepare three more plates." Noel said.

"Sure thing." She said and was off.

Serah led them to the living room and they all sat around the fireplace. Vanitas made sure to sit in the middle of Sora and Ventus so if things were to go south he could grab the both of them and run. He did not trust anyone except for Sora and Ventus.

"So tell us, what has led you boys here?" Serah asked politely.

"Do not worry this home is unbiased. In fact our town we created for those who could not fit elsewhere." Noel said.

Sora was the first to speak. Ventus was too scared and Vanitas did not feel like cooperating. Sora gave his account of everything that had a happened. From when he first picked Ventus up from the side of the road to the present. It was a long tale that took a little over an hour. After Sora had finished Noel and Serah were quiet for a while and then they talked amongst themselves. When they finished they turned to the three boys. Vanitas was tensing up getting ready to be betrayed.

"You boys are welcome to stay with us. Our only request is that you send a letter to your parents explaining where you are and that you are safe. Do not worry we will not send you back." Serah said.

All three of the boys looked relieved. They had found a place to stay in the most unlikely way. While the five of them ate dinner some of the servants prepared three rooms for them. When they were shown to them Vanitas refused to leave Ventus alone. He still did not trust them. For all he knew while Sora and he were sleeping they could take Ventus away.

A week passed and they still had yet to send out a letter to their parents. Vanitas wanted nothing to do with them anymore so it was up to Sora to write the letter. But what was he to write? How do you write a goodbye letter to your parents? Sora was glad that they were safe but he knew he would miss his parents. Even if they had made choices he did not like. He still loved them. He also wanted to know what had become of Terra and those servants who had helped them escape and what happened to the monster that still haunted his friend. It gave him chills every time the face of Xehenort ran through his mind. So it was that Sora finally made up his mind about what he was going to write. A few weeks later he got a reply.

It read:

Dear Sora,

I have received your letter. Your father and I were worried sick about you and your brother. We are saddened that things have ended up this way.

We still love you son. You and your brother.

Terra is doing well. His life is not in danger but we had to let him go due to his irresponsibility and endangerment of you two. Xehenort as we have heard from second hand sources is now a permanent resident at the hospital and is paralyzed from the chest down. Because of your actions if you were to return they would throw you in jail. I hope that you will both find happiness and we wish you the best of luck. Even though this is goodbye we still love you both and we wish that you were still here. We realize now that it was a huge mistake to have let that boy come into our home. He is the reason things have ended up the way they have. He has taken you both from us. We will miss you both terribly.

Love your mother

Sora didn't know how to feel about the letter but at least Xehenort could no longer hurt them anymore. He showed Vanitas the letter and for the rest of that day Vanitas was in a foul mood. Over the next month Ventus recovered nicely. He was now closer to a healthy weight and all of his wounds were healed. Sora's wound on his cheek was also healed. All that remained was a scar. Serah and Noel had become like parents to the three boys and loved them as such.

It was now mid July and the warmth of summer was in full blast. Vanitas sat on the porch of his new home. Yes that is what he wanted to call it. Not a house, not a place to live but, a home. It felt different or rather he felt different. There had been a significant change within himself that he had noticed. If it weren't for Ventus he would have still been that empty shell of a person. Empty and filled with darkness. Ventus was his light. The one person who was able to reach into his soul and find what Vanitas had lost so long ago.

Vanitas heard the front door open and then close. "What are you doing out here?" Ventus asked as he sat beside Vanitas.

"I was just thinking." He replied.

"About what?" Ventus asked.

"Many things but..., mostly about you." He answered.

"Me?"

"Yes you idiot." Vanitas said and smiled.

Vanitas pulled Ventus close to him and then leaned his head on the blonde's shoulder. The front door opened again but this time quickly and the door almost slammed shut.

"Vani! Ven! Come inside! It's almost time for Riku to come and we don't want to be unprepared." Sora said excitedly.

That very day Riku who was Sora's long time best friend was going to visit. Sora hadn't seen him since the Christmas party of the past year. Sora grabbed a hold of Ven's hand and started pulling him up. Vanitas by this time was completely annoyed that Sora had interrupted Ventus and his conversation. But then he smiled as he watched a surprised Ventus get dragged in by his over excited brother. Vanitas had found what he had been looking for. He didn't know it but he had been searching and now he had finally found the place where he belonged. He had finally found a place to call home.
