Gracious

He can't hold Dominique down. He can't lock her up in a cage and stop her from flying away from him – he can't keep her forever, it's useless trying. Holding onto Dominique is like trying to hold onto air – he can't do it, she keeps slipping through his fingers, dancing in the sky, just out of grasp. One day she's going to slip and fall and shatter into a million pieces. They both know that he'll be there to put her back together again.

She leans back onto the sand, tracing the sky with her fingertips. He watches her, almost afraid that she'll disappear if he takes his eyes away from her. He knows that he's losing her.

"Why are we pretending?" he asks, and his tone's harsher than he intended.

Dominique doesn't look at him – her face remains unchanged as she strokes the clouds above her head.

"I don't know what you mean," her voice is far too innocent. She still doesn't look at him, either. She knows that, if she does, she'll give in again.

"You're really leaving this time – you're really leaving me," Lorcan says. He tries to hide his anger, his hurt, but he can't. His voice cracks. He knows that he's ruining the moment, and that maybe all she wants is too forget about it for a while. God knows, he wants to forget, but something's stopping him.

"I'm not leaving you, Lorcan, I'm leaving this place. I'm unhappy here. I don't want to spend the rest of my life tied down to this town, to my family and to my friends and - "

"To me," Lorcan finishes – there's a finality in his voice, acceptance, almost.

Dominique doesn't deny it. She just stares out across the horizon, even now, there's a longing in her eyes.

"I love you," she says simply, and the words hurt Lorcan rather than heal him, because he knows how little this means anymore.

"I love you," she repeats, "But this isn't me. I want to travel, I want wake up one morning and catch a train to the middle of nowhere. I want to get lost and I want to make mistakes. I want to be able to make my own decisions and I want to pay the consequences for them. I don't want to think about anyone else, or anything else. I want to be selfish, Lorcan. I can't put myself first when you're around." She still hasn't looked at him.

"You're being pretty selfish now," Lorcan snaps, throwing a large stone out into the ocean before him. On contact it makes a thud, and sinks almost immediately to the bed below.

Dominique can't help it. Silent tears trickle down her face, and now it's Lorcan's turn not to look at her. He's ashamed.

Dominique swallows and gets to her feet.

"Tomorrow, I'm leaving. This will be the last time I'll ever see you for quite a while. I'm not going to keep in contact. I'm not going to think about you. I'm going to try very hard not to miss you. I want you to do the same. Just promise me one thing," Dominique says slowly, as if she's only just starting to process all of this.

Lorcan looks up, and they meet eyes for the first time in what feels like forever.

"Don't forget me," she whispers, pressing her lips against his for one short, bittersweet second.

"Never," he promises.

Note: The title and lyrics at the beginning belong to the fabulous Ben Howard – if you don't know who he is, I would strongly advise you to check him out. He is an amazing musician. Harry Potter, obviously, belongs to J.K Rowling.
