Lucy cries a lot. She cries when she is happy, she cried when she found out her father died (but Natsu supposes that's a given, he's cried for Igneel a thousand times) and she cries whenever she just feels like it. That's it feels like. Her crying face is pretty like the rest of her faces, except for her angry face. Her angry face frightens even him and Gray and her angry face has beaten Erza to the ground.

He's not really surprised to see her crying when he creeps into her apartment. He slips into the living room quietly, where she is seated facing away from him, her bare knees on the hardwood. Her shoulders are shaking a little, and in front of her is a piece of paper. He peeks over her shoulder and sees long scribbles of hand-writing that he can barely read.

"Lucy?"

At the sound of either her name or Natsu's voice, she jumps a metre into the air and scrambles to cover the paper up. It's not really like he's seen anything, but he looks away guiltily anyways.

She looks up at him when the paper is folded and tucked away and he thinks that she really is pretty. It's weird, how nice she can look even when her eyes are rimmed with red, and her make-up and her nose are both running. Her nose and cheeks are red and she looks like a disaster. A nice disaster? His eyebrows come together. Is that even possible? Weird.

He crashes down next to her on the floor and settles against her old couch. She looks back down at the floor and she wipes her tears with the back of her hand.

Another thing about Lucy is that he never knows what to say when she's upset. Then again it might just apply to any and every crying girl, but with Lucy he actually wants to know what to say to make her stop crying. They sit in silence for another few minutes and finally, unconsciously, his arm comes up and pulls Lucy's shoulder into his side. Her head knocks against his shoulder and she makes a protesting squeaky sound, but doesn't move nonetheless.

He doesn't look back down to her face until she stops crying and her upset has been reduced to hiccups and hitched breath and occasional quiet sniffles. They don't say anything for a long time after that and when he finally looks back down, Lucy smiles at him.

Maybe he doesn't need to know what to say after all.
