Light screamed, a horrific, raw one, with L's rapidly cooling body in his lap.

The task force around him was completely shocked at what had just transpired, and Matsuda reached in an attempt to comfort Light, and failed. Light slapped his hand away harshly, hunching over L protectively. Light's breath was erratic and uneven, sepia eyes glinting internal conflict.

"I was his only friend! He was mine! I loved him!" Light screeched hysterically, not thinking. There was a malicious black pit in his stomach, sinking lower and lower. It hurt. L's being just crumpling to the floor with a thud, like something worthless. It haunted him now repeating over and over and over again, and felt as though it would forever.

The others' jaws dropped, and Matsuda, with tears burning in his eyes ushered them all out, allowing Light some alone time. A seething hiss of terror at what he caused ripped from his throat.

It had only been a plan at first to throw suspicion off him. To seduce the invincible L, to meet and overthrow that challenge of actually trying to get something without someone handing it to him, and Light knew he could do it. He was so confident, arrogant, full of unwavering pride.

Stroking the detective's surprisingly soft raven hair now with an agonizing ache in his chest, he realized what an utterly stupid plan it was. He'd never thought he'd set himself a trap to fall in love.

Light smiles so sweetly, makes him treats, presses his body against L's trying to peer at the computer screen, since he knows no one could possibly resist him. After a few months, he noticed L's obsessive stares become less and less cold and more and more confused and conflicted.

So Light finally murmured those three sacred words to the other, thrilled that his plan was working. Light said them every single chance he got, and L, unfailingly cautious, would never believe them.

"L?"

"Yes, Light-kun?"

"I love you."

L simply gave him a dark look and turned around.

Always saying them, somewhere along the line, they became genuine and Light's desperation did too.

It was impossible! That he of all people would find himself stuck with no way to get out, with the person that would eventually destroy him, no less! But it happened, and Kira would give a nasty grin in his mind every time L looked away, and offered Light that One Solution, whispered it so very persuasively that he was left to believe that it was the only answer.

His mind had been so clouded with hurt and tears that he decided he would do it. Kill L, because it was the only way to get what he really wanted, besides the love that he knew would never come.

Light didn't realize until that thud off the chair he was a moron, that Kira had tricked him, and Light lost against Kira.

Light rocked the corpse gently in his arms, his mind broken and in pieces. His breathing hitched faster and faster with his wet sobs, head throbbing intensely, so, so, so hard. In that instant, something in him irreversibly snapped.

All of a sudden a maniacal flash of teeth came, and Light dissipated, Kira taking over, claiming.

It was fitting, for Light to die along with his loved one.

Kira smiled gently, lips curling up, insanity swirling in his eyes, and bent over the detective to get what Light had desired so badly.

"Sorry L, but-"

A chaste, sweet kiss on lips.

"Dead boys don't say no."
