Chapter 10: Twilight Parasite

Forest Temple...

"On guard, ye hairy bastard!" Zelda crowed as she followed the baboon's movement with her eyes. It jumped from pillar to pillar, stopping once in a while to taunt her and wiggled its buttocks. Screeching shrilly, it threw the boomerang from its hand. Zelda quickly rolled out of the way, watching the baboon jumping from one end to another.

What do you think you're doing? Playing tag? We don't have time for that! Midna scolded as she vaporized out of Zelda's shadow.

"If you have any ideas of beating a mutated baboon, I'd love to hear it!" Zelda responded angrily. "Fuck, I swear I'm gonna have a neck cramp at this rate."

You have to change strategy if you don't want to walk around with a displaced head. Somehow you have to knock that monkey off its perch.

"You mean I have to roll?" Zelda stop to look at Midna. "I thought that I wouldn't have to use that anymore."

Look here Sweet cakes, I can't think about anything else at this moment. Rolling is your best bet! Look, that baboon is waiting for you. I suggest you wrap this up quick. With that, Midna disappeared.

I have to roll? Zelda looked up to see the monkey staring at her with its beady eyes.

"How nice of you to wait for me." She called up to it, drawing her sword. "Now play time is over." The baboon screeched in reply and resumed to jump from pillar to pillar. Using the advice that Midna gave her, she rolled right into one and the baboon fell down.

"HIYAAA!" She started hacking away at the body before the animal hopped up and climbed back, shaking its fist at her. Whipping out the Gale Boomerang and flicking its wrist, it attacked once more.

It's going to take more than just one single attack to take that thing down. Keep up this pattern of attack and you'll be able to defeat it. Midna commented. Dodge, Roll, Attack, Repeat. Zelda was sure her body was on autopilot as she thrust the sword one final time into the baboon's body. By a miracle chance, the animal avoided a critical blow but was still severely wounded. Sitting up slowly, it cradled its broken arm and with one last cry, disappeared from the room. Tucking the sword back into its sheath, Zelda looked up in wonder as the Gale Boomerang glowed brightly.

"I am the Fairy of Winds who resides in this boomerang." A voice spoke from within, "You have freed me from evil, and I now have my true power back. Please...take it with you, use it to aid your quest, and may both my power and my blessing go with you." The boomerang spun around some more before landing in her open arms.

Oh lookie. Midna popped up with excitement. With this weapon, you can cut those loose vines that we encountered before and climb to the other side. Another added bonus, you can also retrieve items that are too far away for you to reach. Now chop, chop, we have a long ways away and I'm pretty sure those monkeys are satisfied.

What a slave driver. Zelda grimaced as she strapped the boomerang to her back. Grabbing a nearby torch, she quickly made her wayto the gated door. With the boomerang in hand she unlocked it and appeared back to where she started. Noticing a large cage that held a captured monkey she hurried over and rescued it. Chattering it's thanks, it jumped over the wind bridges and disappeared back into the Forest Temple.

Well. I guess there are still some monkeys you haven't freed yet. Midna commented dryly. At this point you should just save them all and see what you can get for it! Nodding in agreement, Zelda continued exploring the temple for the rest of the captured monkeys or places where the Gale boomerang came in handy. She found another piece of the Heart, some Rupees, a big key and a compass.

Fiiiinally! Midna said, taking a look at the item. Using this we'll be able to locate the rest of the monkeys that are still locked around. It was definitely how Midna predicted the compass helped them locate the rest of the monkeys and as she herded them to another chamber, they all climbed a tree and linked together. They swung back and forth, the bottom monkey clapping his hand and awaited Zelda to jump. Swallowing her nervousness she leaped and held onto the monkey's hands. Swinging back and forth the monkey let her go and she rolled to a stop on the other side. The door was covered with a chain but after she used the key she found in one of the chests, the chain fell off.

"Here we go." She took a deep a breath and opened the door. She soon found herself in a giant room...well a giant marsh swamp thing. The water looked eerily calm before it turned purple and two monstrous plants rose up from the depths with their tongues hanging out of their mouths in excitement.

"What...the...hell...are those?" She said as she stared at the two monsters that resembles a man-eating plant in disgust.

That is the Twilight Parasite named Diababa. Midna replied. I think these are its arms so you shouldn't waste too much of your energy with them. See those bomb bugs on the lily pads? I think you know what to do.

"Yeah I know the perfect attack!" Zelda whipped out the boomerang and targeted the plants separately, sending bombs down their throats. She watched as they sank beneath the purple water before they reamerged along with the main body. It opened its mouth and revealed a single eye-ball, the weakest spot and probably the most difficult to hit. "So two ugly plants made a giant ugly flower with teeth and an eyeball...that makes LOGICAL sense!" She stomped her feet in annoyance. "God I hate this!"

"GROARRR!" Diababa roared angrily and reared back to strike.

"Ahahahah! Can't catch me!" Zelda laughed as she dodged the first round of attacks, rolling out of the way from the hungry mouths that wanted to rip her to shreds. "Something as big as you can never catch someone as small as I!"

Stop foolin' around! Midna snapped angrily. This is not the time to be monkeying around or do you want to stay in this dreadful place any longer than necessary?

"You got any suggestions? Because so far all I've gotten from you are opinions and complaints, nothing about killing a giant ugly parasitic man-plant!" The princess retorted as she raised her shield in time to deflect an attack from the right.

You see this? Midna growled as her hair turned into a giant hand. I'm gonna fucking slap you with it if you don't figure out how to destroy that thing.

"Well aren't you an aggressive and sassy creature." Zelda commented dryly and jabbed at the plant coming in from the left. A sudden movement from above signaled the arrival of the baboon she defeated earlier, in its feet it held up a bomb bug. Figuring out a way to defeat her opponent, she took turns alternating between defense and attack but kept her eyes on the target and allowed the Gale boomerang to do its thing.

"ZAAYYAAAAAA!" Zelda twisted her body 360 degrees, the sword held tightly in her hand when the plant came at her. It shook its head in rage as it deflected the sword and retreated a bit before attacking with vigor.

It should be weakened by now. One more attack will finish it off for sure. She thought and the baboon came back with another bomb in its feet, zip-lining from above. Unleashing the boomerang she watched as the bomb exploded and the plant collapsed in front of her, the eye-ball out to where she could make the perfect move."HAIIIYA!" Delivering a final strike Zelda drove her sword straight through the eye, grimacing at the purple ooze that came out of it. The creature thrashed around in pain before dying, its body shriveled up and the eyeball turned into the last piece of the Heart container. The body exploded into tiny black particles before coming together to create this object. It floated down and Zelda held out her hands to hold it.

Eee hee hee. Well done. Midna praised her, smiling at the object. That's...what I'm looking for. She snatched it away and held it in her grasp. This is a Fused Shadow. It's what the light spirit called dark power...Do you remember what that spirit said? About how you had to match the power of the king of shadows? Zelda's mind flew back to when she was talking to the light spirit Ordona and nodded her head. Could it really be so easy? Is this all there is to it? Eee hee hee. There's a total of three Fused Shadows. I think the other light spirits have the rest...If you want to know exactly what Fused Shadows are...Well, maybe I'll tell you if you find the other two. I guess you'd better do your best to find them. Floating over to a vacant spot on the ground, she opened up a portal for escape. Let's not waste anymore time when we could be off on our search.

"Damn it Link, why did you have to be kidnapped?!" Zelda groaned loudly as she retrieved the Heart container. After making sure nothing else was left for her to do she stepped in Midna's portal and escaped the Forest Temple.
