Opening Up

His hand trailed across the glass before him. As he peered through the window into a small room, his eyes softened at the sight he came across.

He could see her clearly, standing before a few smeets in one of the rooms within the largest and main smeet Hatchery, one of many. She was smiling, and though her lips were moving, he couldn't hear exactly what she was saying from behind the glass. The little smeets surrounding her had wide smiles on their faces as they listened inventively to whatever it was she was telling them. All smeets loved and adored Miyuki, who, when she wasn't busy aboard the Massive or in meetings with important political and military leaders, would spend most of her free time going down into the Hatcheries, giving the newborn smeets company and telling them stories, playing with them and helping them learn. Red only smiled.

Miyuki was so lost in her story that she didn't hear the door open nor the footsteps approaching behind her The story was interrupted when she was startled by the arms that suddenly wrapped around her from behind. "What the...?" She turned, seeing that it was in fact Red who was holding onto her. And she noticed his rather mischievous smirk. "Red!"

"Did I interrupt something?" He asked, giving a small chuckle at her slight annoyance of his surprising arrival. But nonetheless she allowed him to hold her.

"Yes as a matter-of-fact, you did," Miyuki stated, pretending to sound annoyed and frustrated, "I was in the middle of their favorite story."

The smeets however had forgotten the story and instead stared up at Red in amazement. Noticing his choice of clothing, they had a slight idea of Red's rank in the Irken Empire. "Are you an Elite?" one of them asked.

Despite his odd demeanor around smeets, he nodded, giving a small smile. "Yes I am."

"He's going to be Tallest one day," Miyuki added, smiling.

"Cool!" The little smeets breathed out in astonishment.

"You're so lucky!" one of them piped up.

"I hope I get to be Tallest!" Another one chimed in.

Red couldn't help but chuckle at the enthusiastic and eager smeets before him. "Well, it all takes hard work and courage. And if you have faith in our Empire and great loyalty, you'll surely make it far in life."

"Are you Miyuki's boyfriend?" Another smeet asked, titling her head in curiosity at the entwined pair.

Now however, Red and Miyuki were taken aback and hesitated with the smeet's question. No one knew that they were together. Not even Purple, Red's best friend knew of their secret. But a group of tiny smeets knowing their secret couldn't hurt. Right?

Despite his hesitation to answer and his rather awkward nature toward smeets (he never was much of a caring, nurturing figure), Red put a finger to his lips. "Shhhh... Don't tell anyone." He gave them a smile.

The smeets giggled at his comment, quickly nodding.

Miyuki's eyes lit up at Red's ability to open up and show his hidden soft side around the most innocent of beings; the future generation of Irk. If it were possible, the idea itself sounding impossible all on it's own, Miyuki was certain that Red would make a great father. Even if he denied it, which he surely would, Miyuki could look into his ruby-red eyes and know the truth.

And that was all that mattered.
