Hello everyone. First of all I would like to thank everyone who has reviewed this story. It's been a wild and fun ride and I wouldn't want it any other way. I hope you enjoy.

Disclaimer: I STILL don't own either Fruits Basket or Ouran Highschool Host Club.

"Miss. Fujikoa?" A sweet smiling nurse stood in the doorway of Haruhi's hospital room. Her sleek blonde hair was pulled into a no nonsense bun and her blue eyes shone with a joy no one in this wing of the hospital should have processed. "You have a visitor."

Haruhi didn't have to ask the nurse who was visiting her today in her last day in the hospital. She already knew. "Let him in."

The kind nurse stepped away and in her place stood a tall man with a shock of dark hair that fell over one eye completely, though it didn't matter much considering he couldn't see out of it anyway. She remembered the first time she'd seen him when she woke up in the nurse's office of her high school. Hatori Sohma.

"I'll just leave you two alone," The chipper nurse continued, shooting a meaningful glance at the visitors back. In any other situation, one where Haruhi didn't know the man before her, she would think he was handsome in that mysterious way a man can be. But not in this moment, where that man would take away all her memories of the Sohma family that she had and she would let him. Would she still think him handsome then?

The door shut and Haruhi and Hatori just stood facing each other in an awkward silence each knowing what was about to proceed but neither knowing exactly how to start it. Some part of Haruhi wished she could just get over it and return back home and to her normal life. The Sohma before her had convinced the other doctors at the hospital that she wasn't insane and just sustained an early head injury causing delusions that Haruhi explained mixed with a sort of intimidation that Tohru had for Akito. The words had made her head hurt, but the end result that she would return home later today. Haruhi supposed she should have thanked Hatori, but she couldn't.

After an uncomfortable beat of silence, Hatori moved. He walked towards the bed where Haruhi Fujikoa sat, her brown hair falling around her pretty face and her bright eyes brimming with an emotion that the doctor couldn't identify.

It was almost funny that this little girl and her cousin could cause all this trouble. "You know what is going to happen in just a few minutes."

"I do." She knew she should have been afraid or at least a little bit defeated but she wasn't. She wasn't resentful either, she was just patient.

"Your friends," Hatori stated. "They have all agreed to have their memories erased and have done so willingly. Can I assume you will let yours be erased willingly as well?"

She nodded, remembering the hard conversation she had with the other Host Club members who ruefully agreed. "We won't be sad," Honey had told her in a serious tone. "Because we won't even remember the people we'll miss."

Despite that, Haruhi hoped that she would feel sad. She had grown to like the Sohmas and the way they made her laugh. And since she would forget them, she still hoped they would at remember her. "Yes."

"Is there anything you would like answered before I do this?" This wasn't the normal policy when people had their memories erased but Shigure of all people had suggested it. "At least let her know everything for a little bit," He suggested with a somber expression. "It couldn't hurt, could it?"

Haruhi looked away from Hatori, turning her entire body away and refusing to meet his serious gaze as she asked in a small voice. "Is he going to be okay?"

Those six words were the last thing that he had expected to come from the Fujioka girl's mouth, but he promised that he could be truthful no matter what. "He's weak but he will be alright." As alright as he can be, Hatori thought sternly. "Is that all you'd like to know?"

She nodded quickly, and then suddenly twisted her head back to look at the daughter determinedly. "You have to promise me something."

This was another first for the Sohma doctor. "What?"

"You can't let her get hurt," Haruhi's voice didn't shake when she spoke, though she felt an incredible sadness that she couldn't protect her own family and was trusting this man to do so.

"Tohru," The doctor replied flatly.

She nodded. "You can't take her memory away, no matter what happens. To take away her memories of the Sohmas...it would destroy her."

Suddenly, Hatori was reminded of a girl he'd known not too long ago. A girl whose life had been destroyed by her love of the Sohma family. A girl who begged for her memories to be taken away, who believed the pain overwhelmed the good. "In some cases it helps. It would be better than remembering certain ordeals."

"You don't understand, do you?" Haruhi wondered, her face growing softer with remorse. "Tohru has always looked for the light when things were at its darkest. When her mother died, she found a light in the Sohmas. They became the new family for the one she'd lost. Without them, I don't know what she would do. She wouldn't be able to find the light in being alone with her grandfather and his family, because the light was taken away." Tears had started to run down Haruhi's cheeks but she made no move to stop wipe them away. "Tohru's been through so much, both good and bad. If you took away the bad memories and the good ones she would feel even worse than she did before. If I lost all the bad memories I had with my mother, I wouldn't be able to enjoy the good ones as much as I do now. It's because of all the hardships that we faced that makes them so good.

"You can take away my memories, but you can't take away hers." Haruhi swore, her eyes bright. "You have to promise me that. Even when I don't remember you or your family, you have to promise me that you'll take care of her. Always. They're her family as much as I am. And I will always be there to protect my family."

Now Hatori could identify the emotion that he saw in Haruhi Fujioka's eyes when he walked into the room. Hope. A last hope that no matter what happened to her, her cousin would be safe.

Another long awkward silence fell onto the two as they let Haruhi's words sink in. That last final plead that her cousin would be safe sticking in the doctor's mind and tangling in with his thoughts of Kana. If he'd explained it like that, would she be with him today? Could she have been as strong as Haruhi is right now?

Suddenly, his strong hand captured Haruhi's head and she looked up at him with wide eyes. The same pleading look that she'd given him. The same hope that maybe, one day things would be alright again mirroring in her the two women's eyes. The same wish, the same fate, but very different as well.

And then in just a whisper he said. "I will,"

Haruhi nodded, a silent understanding mixed with gratitude and shut her eyes. She didn't want to see him as he took away the images of her friends and Tohru away forever. Meeting Kyo and Yuki, Renge appearing from the floor wearing a strange and wonderful outfit designed by Ayame, Shigure making her laugh. She thought about each one hard, desperate to hold onto them even though they would disappear.

She waited.

And they stayed. None of her memories disappeared, and she went through them again to make sure none were missing and was grateful that none had. After another long pause, the weight of Hatori's hand left her head and her eyes opened, revealing she was alone.

Three things were certain between Hatori Sohma and Haruhi Fujioka. First, they shared a secret that they would never tell another living soul, it would only stay forever between them.

Secondly, Haruhi would always protect the Sohma family secret, because they too were as much her family as they were to Tohru.

And most importantly, Hatori and Haruhi saw each other in a new light and had gained a respect for one another that neither would soon forget, even if they never saw each other again. She saw a compassion that no one had seen in him for a long time, and Hatori saw a bravery in Haruhi that had been there all along, but was too blind to really see.
