A/N: I am so sorry for the break.
I told you about Shannon. Shannon is currently still healthy. But everyone is waiting for the other shoe to drop. As soon as the cancer returns, there is nothing that can be done.
Unfortunately, I have another sad story to deliver.
My sister's old dancing friend, Chloe, just turned 14. Chloe has also just been diagnosed with medullablastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. She was having severe headaches, and doctors discovered a tumour on her brain. They removed 99 percent of it, meaning she has a good chance of survival. She's had chemo and radiation therapies, and just went into remission last week.
I am affected by cancer everywhere I turn. I just graduated high school, and the girl who is taking over my prefect position survived leukemia when she was just a little girl.
These people are the reason this story is so important to me. Cancer can tear families apart or it can bring them closer. And it affects everyone.
Please pray for Chloe and Shannon. They're both beautiful girls who deserve their chance at life.
Disclaimer: I don't own CM.
Standing in the round table room, with the eyes of the team upon her, Henry clutching her hand, JJ was beginning to feel like she couldn't breathe. It was a big thing she was about to share.
Hotch noticed her face paling as she struggled to find her words. Moving swiftly towards her, he pulled out a chair, placing a hand on her back as he looked at her with concern.
"JJ, sit down. You look like you're about to faint," he said gently. JJ looked at him gratefully, swallowing thickly as she took the seat he was offering, lifting Henry into her lap.
Morgan watched her closely. She looked much better than the last time he'd seen her. He knew her mom was staying with them; he also knew that was the only reason JJ was still sane.
"JJ, would it be easier to just say it?" Rossi suggested softly, his kindness apparent in his eyes.
JJ took another deep breath, trying to contain herself. Her voice barely above a whisper, she muttered the two words that would reveal what had been going on with her for the past three months.
"I'm pregnant"
Morgan opened his mouth to speak, but subsequently closed it, his eyes falling closed as well. Could this woman not catch a break?
Everything clicked into place in Reid's mind. He knew Will's death had taken a huge toll on JJ, but even then, her self-harm hadn't quite made sense to him. Now it did. Now, he fully understood the inner turmoil she was going through.
"JJ...," Rossi started, not sure what to say. He watched as Henry slipped off his mother's lap, running to his godmother whom he had spotted walking towards the conference room through the open door. "It's Will's?"
The flash of anger that appeared momentarily in her eyes made it quite apparent that Rossi had opened his mouth at the wrong time.
"What the hell is that supposed to mean?" she spat, rising up from her chair. Morgan rose as well, stepping in between his two colleagues; JJ could inflict some serious damage on the older man if she wanted to.
"Nothing, JJ, that's not what I meant to say-," Rossi said hastily, backing away from the angry blonde.
"You think that because my husband's dead, I'm shallow enough to go find some other guy to fuck?" JJ said angrily, her voice rising. Reid winced, almost running out of the room towards Garcia, ushering her and Henry out into the bullpen.
"JJ, I don't think that's what he meant," Alex said calmly, staying slightly behind Hotch as she spoke with her voice of reason.
"No, that's not what I meant JJ, I just...your husband's dead...I can't understand how...JJ, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Rossi said carefully, moving towards JJ.
JJ let out a choked sob, falling back into her chair and covering her face with her hands. "I'm sorry"
Morgan stepped forward, kneeling down in front of JJ and wrapping his arms around her. She clutched at him, ever appreciative of the never ending support he seemed to have for her.
"JJ, how long have you known?" Morgan asked softly.
JJ looked up, wiping her eyes with a tissue Hotch had handed her. "Since about a month after Will died"
There was a silence in the room as Morgan comforted their friend and colleague.
There was a unanimous thought throughout the room.
No matter what it took, no matter what lengths they had to go to to support her, JJ was not going through this alone.
Brushing her hair back off of her face, JJ secured it in a neat ponytail. Setting the brush down on the counter, she stood for a moment and looked in the mirror.
She didn't look so thin anymore. Her mother's cooking had helped her gain the weight she'd lost in her worst moments. She didn't look as tired as she used to. The dark circles under her eyes had faded, and her electric blues shone once more.
Turning side on, JJ had to smile. She was nearing four months and was definitely starting to show.
"Please let me know you're in there sometime soon, baby," she said softly, her hand tracing soft circles on her bump. "I'm starting to worry"
"Mooooooommmyyy!" came Henry's playful shriek as he ran down the hallway. Giggling hysterically, he ran into JJ's room as JJ exited the bathroom, Chris hot on his tail.
"I'm gonna get you!" Chris laughed, scooping Henry up and throwing him over his shoulder. JJ had to laugh as Henry squealed.
"Uncle Chris! Put me down!" Henry giggled. Chris began to walk back out of the room, JJ right behind him.
"Not until you say the magic word," Chris teased.
"PLEEEEEAASE!" Henry exclaimed.
"No, it's actually 'pineapples' but you were close," Chris teased, setting Henry back down on his feet. JJ laughed as Henry giggled.
"Uncle Chris, you're silly," the little boy said matter-of-factly as he ran off ahead of his mom and his uncle.
"So...how are we today?" Chris asked softly, turning to look at his sister as they walked back down the hallway towards the front of the house.
JJ smiled, looking up at her brother. "Today is one of the better days"
"And the baby?" Chris continued gently.
Placing a hand on her bump, JJ looked up at Chris. "I just want her to move. So I know she's ok"
"You think it's a girl?"
"I have a pretty good feeling"
"Well, it'll all be fine. Don't worry too much. You're stronger than you think you are," Chris said warmly, putting an arm around his sister and giving her a squeeze as they reached the main living area.
"Mommy, Nana said we can watch movies and eat ice-cream!" Henry yelled excitedly, running back to meet his mom and his Uncle Chris.
"Did she now?" JJ replied, an amused smile on her face as she looked up at her mother, who was standing behind him.
"You can pick the first movie, Momma, I don't mind," Henry chimed in, smiling sweetly up at his mom.
"Sounds like a deal to me," JJ laughed, ruffling Henry's hair. Henry giggled, grabbing Chris and JJ's hands and pulling them into the lounge room to join Sandy.
Stacking the ice-cream bowls in the dishwasher, JJ straightened up and turned around, leaning back against the counter. She could hear Chris talking to Henry, along with Henry's laughter at whatever his uncle was saying.
It reminded her of all those times when she would be cleaning up after dinner, and she'd hear Will and Henry laughing about something in the lounge room.
"You ok?" came her mother's voice, breaking her from her reverie.
JJ half smiled, nodding. "Yeah...I think so"
"Care to share what's on your mind?" Sandy asked softly, leaning back against the kitchen table.
JJ sighed. "Will. He's always on my mind...whether I like it or not. I just keep thinking about...we lost him so quickly. I mean...seven months and he was gone"
"Cancer is an awful thing, hon, you know that. It rips families apart, and turns even the strongest people into frail beings that can't even get out of bed," Sandy said softly, taking a step towards her daughter. "I watched it happen to your father...it killed me to stand by and see it happen to Will, and to see what it did to you"
JJ took a deep breath. "It was around a year ago that he found out he was sick. And he was so healthy. We never saw it coming"
"No-one does," Sandy sighed. "It comes at you like a freight train, and once it's knocked you down, you never get up again"
Looking through the arch into the lounge room, JJ watched as Henry sat on Chris' lap, animatedly telling his uncle a story.
"I keep thinking about Henry. I mean, he's really smart, but as much as it appears he does, I don't think he really understands what happened to his dad"
Sandy shook her head. "Cancer is a hard enough concept for adults to understand. You're right in saying that Henry is smart, he is a clever little boy...but I don't think he really understands either"
"I worry about him...how's he going to cope growing up without his dad? How do I handle it when he starts puberty, when he really needs his father-"
"Jen," Sandy cut in, placing her hands on JJ's shoulders. "He's five. You have at least eight years before you really need to worry about it. And Henry may grow up without his dad, but he's not going to grow up without male presence. You can still turn to Spencer, Aaron, David, and Derek. You know that they would be there for Henry in a heartbeat"
JJ nodded slowly. "I know"
A silence fell between them as they stood there. Sandy ran her hands over JJ's upper arms in a comforting manner, all the while watching her daughter's eyes.
Looking down at the floor, JJ squeezed her eyes shut, before giving in and opening them as she looked back up at her mother. Tears spilled over, running down her pale cheeks.
Without a single word, Sandy pulled her into a hug, pressing a kiss to her daughter's cheek.
"I miss him so much," came JJ's slightly muffled voice from her shoulder.
"I know you do," Sandy said softly. "You'll never stop missing him"
