Breakaway

AN: I really do love that Korra is pretty much the opposite of Aang. Like, while Aang ran away from his destiny, Korra ran to it. The creators really do spoil us with little things like that.

So, this story is pretty much about Korra's escape to Republic City. I had a muse one day, and I never got to posting this! Hope you enjoy, and please review!

Disclaimer: I don't own LoK or the song Breakaway.

I'll spread my wings

And I'll learn how to fly

I'll do what it takes

'Til I touch the sky

And I'll make a wish

Take a chance

Make a change

And break away

If there was one thing that Korra had felt for the majority of her life, it was trapped.

Since the tender age of four, she had been forced to live in the White Lotus headquarters, and had only been allowed out every so often. Yes, the rules loosened by a fraction as she grew older, but only to the point where she could go out and ride Naga whenever she wanted, so long as she let one of the sentries know. (It was normally Howl, because all the other men and women who guarded her were stuffy and uptight.)

"Air is the element of freedom." She had often heard that mantra repeated over and over again, and she'd seen it way too many times in the old books and scrolls to number. From what Korra knew, she was a prodigy at Waterbending, Firebending, and Earthbending, even when she was barely walking. It took her little time to become a master at those three elements.

Meanwhile, in Airbending, she still had yet to produce a measly puff of air.

Here she was, at seventeen years old, a master of three of the four elements, and she didn't have any clue how to Airbend. She had studied the ancient forms like she had done with the others prior to training, but unlike the others, Airbending hadn't come naturally to her.

"Air is the element of freedom."

Tenzin was supposed to teach her. He was supposed to come to the South Pole, and train with her there until she had finally mastered the element. But instead, he had left with his family, claiming that he had things to take care of in Republic City. That he had a duty to Republic City. But wasn't his duty first to the Avatar? It wasn't like anyone else could teach Korra Airbending, and when she suggested coming with Tenzin and his family, she was automatically shot down.

And there went her chances at freedom.

But as she sat in her bedroom, staring at the snowy tundra through her foggy window, something in Korra steeled, and she stood up abruptly. She grabbed her parka, some spare clothes, and ran out to where Naga was.

Often times had Katara told her that she had to fulfill her destiny as the Avatar. And now, Korra was finally going to—with or without anyone's help.

She ran into Katara in Naga's stable. The elderly master agreed with her; it was now Korra's time to live up to Aang's legacy. She visited her parents at her hometown; they too agreed that Korra should leave. Following her goodbyes, she hitched a ride with a cargo ship heading straight for Republic City.

She couldn't turn back now.

And as she sat in the ship with Naga and the cargo, Korra couldn't think of a reason why she would want to.
