Disclaimer: I do not own Glee.
A/N: I just wondered. Title taken from Kurt's speech to Burt.
I have something that I wanna say …
01: Stairs
"I'm gay."
Burt is not surprised.
Burt is not angry.
Burt is afraid - afraid to do, afraid to say, the wrong thing.
And even though it would have taken him only two and a half seconds to respond, it is too late.
Kurt is quicker, after one second already rushing past him - head hanging, eyes turned away, trailing on the floor.
Burt is still staring at the space Kurt just left when he hears Kurt take the first steps up the stairs.
He turns just in time to see Kurt trip, unable to coordinate his feet anymore with his whole body shaking.
Kurt, on his hands and knees now, still shaking violently, does not dare turn back to look at his father.
And so Burt has to watch his son drag himself up one more step onto the small landing and cower on it - upper body hunched over on the next set of stairs, right side pressed into the whitewashed wall, whole frame wracked by sobs breaking from his throat now in wet gasps, and words jumbled in a way that prevents Burt from drawing any sense from them.
Burt in the next second runs over to Kurt, unable, unwilling to watch on as his son suffers under the weight of misconceptions and hate he so clearly fears his father might have committed to together with most of the rest of Kurt's world.
It is here and now that Burt for the first time begins to comprehend how scared his son has been to lose the one parent left. As he settles down next to Kurt on the landing, he wishes more than anything he had known how to let Kurt know, a long time ago, that loving is never anything to be ashamed of.
Burt's eyes press shut in shame and pain for his own behavior when his hand gently settling on Kurt's heaving back has his son tangibly tense and stop breathing altogether for a moment before bloodshot eyes peak out from where Kurt had had his face buried in his own arms only a second earlier, heaving helplessly.
"I know. And I love you just as much."
Kurt just stares at his father disbelieving, slowly sitting up a little on the stairs, his face one big question, and tears stopped dead in their tracks: How?
And Burt can see in Kurt's face that he had really not been expecting this, anything this open, this affirming.
"How?"
"Heels."
Kurt is still frowning at his dad's answer as he tries to wipe away the tears still clinging to his skin.
"All you wanted for your third birthday,… a sensible pair of heels," Burt replies attempting a careful smile.
"All this time …?"
Burt nods trying to keep his smile soft and reassuring.
Kurt within a split second is crying tears if anything thicker than before.
Burt does not fully understand the reaction until he hears Kurt whisper, "And you still love me?" knows then his son needs the reassurance he did not make any of this just up in his own mind.
"I love you," Burt repeats nodding, "Just as much."
They spent another two minutes on that staircase, Burt's arms protectively, lovingly embracing his son, Kurt's arms slung tight around his father's middle, his face buried in his father's shirt, leaving stains of tears on it Burt is so so glad he is here to catch, to prevent from going unnoticed.
He aches with the thought of how often Kurt must have cried himself to sleep, all alone, fearing this conversation to go a very, very different way. And Burt cannot help but wonder if Kurt thought '… I might ever, I would ever hit ….'
Burt decides here and now that there has been enough silence in these walls. Holding on to each other tight both of them hope this is the end to it.
This is a new beginning.
A/N: So this is one possible version of what else might have happened. I have ideas for others – some so including Blaine.
You would like to read them? Great, leave a review, let me know.
Prompts would be interesting too, I am sure you have some great ideas yourself what might have happened next after "I'm gay."
Only thing for the prompts, I want the characters to stay in character, so Burt to react positive to Kurt's declaration. So it is more up to Kurt what happens next. Of course you can prompt whatever you like and watch me sweat trying to make it work. I have been watching so much old Project Runway lately *make it work* :) LOVE Tim Gunn. And I had never seen the first season before, but how much of a Kurt is Austin Scarlett. I LOOOOVE him alsmost as much as Tim Gunn. But Tim is hard to beat. Seriously if you haven't seen it go check out Season 1 of Project Runway Austin Scarlett is the epitome of a unicorn.
Preggers will always stay one of my all time favorite episodes, because of Kurt and Sue, and Tina is just so hot dancing Single Ladies *wink*
