I sat at the breakfast table with Tris and Will. "Pass the butter?" I asked. Tris handed me the condiments and I spread it over my toast. "Four!" Will said waving. Tobias came and sat down next to Tris.
Will and I exchanged a glance. We both knew Four was positively smitten with Tris but he didn't have the courage to ask her out. Honestly he called himself dauntless.
Will had asked me out during training almost two years before hand. We had begun to adjust to life under the factionless rule. We weren't miserable but we did all miss jumping off of trains. Four muttered something in Tris's ear and they stood up.
"I'll see you guys later." Tris said.
Will and I waved goodbye and finished eating. "Can I talk to you?" He asked me.
"Of course." I said. We walked through the various tunnels and passage ways that used to make the dauntless headquarters.
"Do you remember you told me you had a dog before our choosing day?"
"Yeah… Although killing that dog in the simulation didn't make me want one then… But at the same time… I don't know when I'm alone in my apartment I kind of wish I could get one sometimes…" I thought about it. I had wanted a dog for about a month now.
"I see…" He said. "I asked because my sister wants to get a cat. When we were raised in Erudite we were taught that pets were illogical…are they worth it?"
"I think so…" I said. "… It's kind of nice to know a living thing loves you no matter what… Then again, I have you for that."
He grinned and kissed me quickly. I realized we were outside of his apartment. "Want to come in?" He asked.
"Yes." I said. He opened the door and led me in. We turned on the television and sat on his bed for a while just watching. The seemingly meaningless conversation from before drifted from my mind as he held me.
I was leaning back on his chest when I felt a trail of kisses start at my ear and work their way down my neck. I looked up at him and he grinned at me. "I got something for you." He said.
I gave him a questioning look as he stood up and walked over to his bathroom. I sat up and slid to the edge of the bed. "Close your eyes!" He called. I squeezed them shut and waited. I heard his footsteps come across the room. He took my right hand and I held both out. Something soft and warm was placed against my palms. My eyes flashed open and a wiggly brown puppy was looking back at me.
"OH MY GOD WILL!" I cried. I took the dog the rest of the way out of his hands and hugged it. "Where did you find him!"
"A friend of Zeke's." He said. Then his cheeks flushed and he looked at the floor somewhat sheepishly. "Do you like her?"
I grinned at him and put a hand on his cheek. "Of course! How did you know I was thinking about getting a dog!"
"The other night when you were here… you were talking in your sleep." He said pressing his forehead against mine. I smiled and kissed him closing my eyes. For a moment I felt like everything was perfect.
When I opened my eyes a few tears slipped over my cheeks. I was staring at the roof of my apartment. There was no dog in my arms and Will wasn't there. I started to cry a little bit harder. Will would never be there. A sob escaped my throat and I buried my face in the pillow.
Will would never be there. I would never be held by him or kiss him again. I would never lay my eyes on Will again because Will was dead and he had been for almost two years.
I liked Will. It's too bad he's dead. I just finished Insurgent AND THE NEXT BOOK NEEDS TO COME OUT! If it is out and somebody knows will they please tell me the title so I can buy it?
