Title: Perfect.
Characters: Artemis and Wally
Pairings: Spitfire aka Wally/Artemis
Summary: How do you deal with expecting a marriage proposal all throughout a wonderful dinner, only to not have it happen? Well then.
Notes: Done for the 30 Day Drabble Challenge; Day 11. Okay, I know I'm late but tbh, I finished at 12mn on the dot so I consider it a success. Yay! Besides, this is one of the longer stories I've written.
Prompt: Prepared. (I thought of food, really.)
Everything was perfect.
The view was breath-taking. Wally had taken her to have dinner in a pavilion surrounded by a beautiful flowery garden. There was a small man-made pond just a few feet away from the back of said pavilion. The lights were dim, but bright enough so they wouldn't strain their eyes and still set a light romantic mood. As cheesy as it was, the pavilion itself was intertwined with pink roses everywhere. On the roof, along the banister, and some even littered the floor.
The food was magnificent. Artemis was surprised to find out that the small dinner was prepared entirely by Wally. Wallace Rudolph West cooked for her. The thought tugged at her heart lightly, imagining her wonderful boyfriend slaving in the kitchen, for once. It was always her that cooked for him and, although she enjoys it, this was a wonderful role reversal.
Wally was beyond words. Usually, even on their special anniversaries, their bickering was always there. Light or heavy, they always had something to argue about. Tonight though, he was so sweet and let every remark she made slide. Although it was weird to not have their usual arguments, it was undeniably nice.
Honestly, Artemis was expecting a marriage proposal at the end of dinner. How couldn't she? Wally was acting weird! Nice, but weird. She'd seen enough movies and read enough books to know where this was going. Although she was expecting it, she still couldn't help feeling a bit jittery all throughout dinner.
Expecting something to happen doesn't mean you'd be ready for it, after all.
However, it didn't happen.
She was even extra careful while eating her cheesecake but she didn't feel any hard solid in her mouth while she savoured it. She double-checked the neck of the wine bottle in front of her, but no glistening band of silver. When Wally stood up from his seat, she froze. She felt her heart skip a beat and thought this was it. To her disappointment, he only put his coat back on and even asked if she was going to stay there all night.
Pissed off was a huge understatement.
As they walked back to their house, Artemis kept quiet. Inwardly, she berated herself for getting her hopes so high. She knew she shouldn't be angry with Wally- she wasn't. She was upset with herself.
Artemis sighed in defeat, self-hatred and disappointment all bottled up inside her, and reached out to open the door. She stopped when she felt familiar hands grip her wrist at her sides and turned to face her boyfriend.
Wally had this dead serious look on his face and Artemis briefly wondered if she did anything wrong. Did he want to be the one to open the door or something?
Before she could open her mouth to deliver her snarky comment, the redhead got down on one knee and held her hand in his hands. Artemis's couldn't help but jump with surprise, earning a chuckle from the boy in front of her. Her wide gray eyes stared down at him in complete shock.
After the perfect dinner and everything, he ended up proposing to her on the porch? Well then.
Needless to say, the blonde tackled her boyfriend- fiancé to the ground and peppered his freckled face his light kisses with every 'yes' she said.
