This is just a short one-shot set in 2x08 of the vampire diaries. After Stefan and Damon save Elena and kill Elijah, Elena hugs one of them, but instead of Stefan its Damon.

He'd done it, he'd saved her again and now Elijah hung staked to the wall by a hat stand. He really didn't expect it to be that easy, he smirked. He turned quickly when movement caught his eye and he saw the vampire Rose make her escape, he was about to take off after her, when a sweet voice called to him "Just let her go", it was Elena stood at the top of the stairs, looking down at him in relief and gratitude. Hope bloomed in his heart as he saw her rush down the stairs towards him, but then the hope disappeared and pain shot through him as he saw who she was really headed for, his brother Saint Stefan was stepping forward ready to catch her in his arms. Of course he thought and nodded his head slightly as he remembered her words "it's always gonna be Stefan." But then his cerulean eyes widened in shock when he saw her push Stefan away and launch herself at him.

Elena knew that Stefan was there, knew that he had expected her to run to him, but all she had been able to think about, when she realized that she had been kidnapped, was that Damon would save her.

It was Damon's name that stood out on the message from Bonnie. That was why when she hurried down the steps she pushed passed Stefan and barrelled into Damon's arms. She whispered his name and sobbed into his chest as his arms circled her waist. Damon closed his eyes in relief as the pain ebbed away and he pulled Elena close so he could feel her safe and secure in his arms, she was wounded but alive and that's all that matted, he smiled slightly as he whispered soothing words in her ear, but his smile dropped when he opened his eyes to look straight into the hurt and confused eyes of his brother.
