Grace's P.O.V
I was walking down at the pier, trying to kill time before I had to head in and work. I know Kim was spending her time trying to find Logan a different place to work. I thought our first day at work was bad, let's just say Logan was much worse. I was passing one person's boat when an old woman came out of it. She was dressed in tasteful blue pants and a white flowy shirt, a shawl wrapped around her. When she saw me, she smiled.
"Not swimming today, Grace?"
How did she know my name? I ranked by brain to figure out where I knew her from but came up empty.
"Chatham!" I turned to see a heavyset Hispanic man storming over. I saw Jerry running behind him, looking worried. "You old hag! Your stupid boat scraped my jet ski!" the man pointed out to where a jet ski sat in the water, scuff marks on the side of it. "Your boat wasn't tied because of those old ropes of yours. I want you out!"
"Uncle," Jerry cut in, "Ms. Chatham didn't mean it obviously. At least the jet ski wasn't damaged."
'This old man was Jerry's uncle? I've never felt sorrier for him.'
"Shut up boy. You," the man said pointing at the woman, Ms. Chatham as I know knew her, "your stupid boat is a menace and I'm getting you out of here."
"I highly doubt that." She said, in an aloof tone
The man glared before barrelling past Jerry, who shot us both an apologetic look before taking off after his uncle.
Shaking her head, the lady, Ms. Chatham, said, "Ignore him. I've learned quite early that he's all talk. Why don't you come aboard?"
I nodded and took her hand, taking the invitation to walk on board.
I looked around the room area of the bed area as Ms. Chatham poured us ice tea. I sat on the bed as she joined me.
"You must be her huh?"
"Her? Well that's cryptic."
"The woman Kim told us about. The one who warned her about the siren thing and the ring? She didn't say you lived on a boat."
"Yes, well I didn't tell her I was a Leo either, but that's another tale." She started to giggle but I guess she saw my slightly uncomfortable face. The threat of anyone finding out still scares me, and I guess she immediately felt sorry. "I've made you uncomfortable. I'm so sorry. I'm not a very good host, even if no one's been on the Lorelai for the past 23 years."
I gave her a small smile. Before I could tell her it was ok, we heard someone call her from the pier. She gave an exasperated look as she looked out the window to see the harbour master. I followed the woman as she greeted the man
"Ms. Chatham, I've gotten another complaint about you." I could see Jerry looked uncomfortable as he stood behind his uncle
"I don't think them as complaints. I see them as vies for my attention."
"Are you going to evict her or what?" the man snapped, causing Jerry to look worse and Ms. Chatham to look surprised.
Ignoring the man, the harbour master continued, "you also have unpaid mooring fees that go back five years and you don't keep your vessel up to code."
"You're getting evicted hag! You're out."
"Uncle, stop."
"Be quite. You hurry this up!"
I got off this ship and approached the harbour master, "please why are you doing this?"
"Look, I don't want to do this but Ms. Chatham's presence is causing more of a ruckus than it's ever done. I'm afraid I have to act."
"By throwing her out? You can't she lives here."
We heard a groan and a thud, causing all of us to turn to Ms. Chatham, who was passes out on the deck.
After what seemed like years, Ms. Chatham was on a stretcher heading to the ambulance. The harbour master looked so conflicted while Jerry looked like he wanted to burst into tears.
"Ms. Chatham, you're going to be okay," I told her, tightening my grip on her hand, "do you want me to come with you to the hospital?"
"They want my treasure," she rasped, "don't let them take my treasure."
"Ma'am, I'm afraid you can't go with her. I can make sure that you're informed about what happens."
I told the ME to call the hotel before letting them go. Jerry's uncle looked slightly put off.
"Didn't mean to give the old biddy a heart attack."
Glaring at the man, I snapped, "Well maybe you should tell her that." Without thinking much, I grabbed Jerry's hand and dragged him away from the man. When we were far enough I turned to him, "who is that, that guy?"
"He's my uncle and yeah I know, he's horrible. My family isn't the richest, the only reason we can afford living in the house we're at is because of my uncle. My dad might be getting a promotion that can give us a better life, without my uncle but until then, he practically rules our life. I just try to make sure the hate he brings doesn't cause any bad effects but I guess I'm a little late on that." He looked so guilty that I had to hold his face so he could focus on me.
"Hey, listen. Forget what your uncle said. You're an amazing person and Ms. Chatham is lucky to have you in her corner. How about we go to Shack and I'll get you anything you want."
"Anything?"
Seeing the familiar mischievous look on his face, I said, "anything I can buy, Jerry. Let's just go there kay?"
He shrugged, muttering something about having to try and lead the way to the Surf Shack. I decided to ignore the fact that he hadn't let go of my hand.
Surf Shack
Third Person's P.O.V
Kim walked in the Surf Shack, dragging Logan behind her. The boy's head turned trying to take in everything. She pulled him up to the bar where jack handed off a tray of drinks to another worker.
"Hey Jack."
"Hi Kim. Who's this?"
"Jack, I'd like you to meet my brother, Logan. My mom thought it would be better if we both were in the same place, so he moved down here when we came back."
"So you're Jack," Logan said as he went to shake Jack's hand, "Kim's told me a lot about you."
"good things I hope. You starting senior year with us?"
"No, I'm taking a year off before college."
"Cool."
"Yeah, great," Kim cut in, "um, Jack you know how you love me and I never ask you for anything?"
Not looking impressed, Jack retorted, "what did you do and do I need to hide the body?"
"Ha ha, very funny. I need you to give Logan a job. Hear me out," she said before Jack could open his mouth, "he almost destroyed the hotel and he has to work somewhere when we're at school. I was thinking you could give him a trial job. If he does ok here, will you hire him, please?"
Jack tried to resist the puppy dog eyes Kim flashed at him, but he was beginning to see it was hard to refuse anything the girl wanted. Sighing he said, "one week. If it doesn't work out, he has work somewhere else."
Giving a gleeful giggle, she hugged Jack over the bar, "thank you. I swear he'll be ok here. Just teach him the ropes and he'll be perfect."
"Yeah, yeah. Come on Logan, you start now."
Giving his sister a wave, Logan followed Jack behind the counter just as Grace and Jerry came in.
"Kim. Kim, guess what? That woman you told us about? I found her."
"What really? Where is she?"
"Ok well slight problem. Jerry's jerk of an uncle caused her to have a heart attack. Don't be mad at Jerry, he tried to stop him."
"Did you know Ms. Chatham?" Jerry asked Kim.
"Kinda. I think she knew who last owned my ring." Kim explained, showing off the sliver ring.
"She's a nice person from what I've seen but my uncle likes to make trouble for everyone, including her. Look, I have to go. Thanks Grace."
Kim stared at Grace, who waved at Jerry before noticing that she was being stared at, "what?"
"Nothing. What did you tell Jerry?"
"None of your business. Does that idiot of your brother have a job?"
"Temporary but yes. And now he's Jack's problem."
"How long do you give him before he breaks something?" Grace asked
The two heard a crash and Jack yelling before Kim said, "I never gave him very long."
Sea Shell Hotel
"Wait, so your saying Jerry's uncle could of killed Ms. Chatham?" Milton asked. It was later in the day and he had come over to hear about the woman who had things to say about the girls' secret. "I've never liked the guy. He's horrible and I really hope that Jerry's dad gets that promotion so he can finally leave."
"You and me both. The hospital called and said she's ok but she hadn't been taking her medicine." Grace explained
"I know she's been a little strange and withholding with info sometimes, but I kinda want to do something for her." Kim said
"You know, some people said she's a witch. I mean, lives on the leaky wreck, no friends or family and all alone." Milton commented
"If they said she was an Easter bunny, would you believe them?" Kelsey snipped
"Well there was a time, I thought mermaids, let alone Pure Mermaids, were real." Milton shot back, leaving the girls to agree.
"You know," Julie started, "what if we housed her here when she gets discharged from the hospital? I mean, what if she knows about those things because she was a changed mermaid?"
"The first Pure Mermaids couldn't tell us a lot but she said she's been around for 50 years. She could tell us some more things." Kim said
Kelsey said a thought that had been on everyone's mind, "what about Nicole? I mean the only reason we were able to come back was because Kim's mom thought that Jack had a huge impact on her singing voice. What are we going to do if she says no?"
"We don't tell her. They say she can be released tomorrow. I'll get her and deal with the consequences after," Grace said, "she seemed so happy to be noticed. I'm not taking that away from her."
Next day
Logan sat at one of the tables eating breakfast. He was wearing a Surf Shack uniform, Kim was happy to notice.
"Hey, so how was work?" Kim asked
"Well I broke fewer things there than I did here, so pretty good. Oh and Jack told me to tell you he's gonna kill you, for some reason."
"Don't worry, I know why." Kim said as Nicole came over
"Hey, where's Grace? She has the front desk this morning and she isn't here."
Kim shrugged as she heard the front doors open and Grace's voice call over.
"Nicole, we have a house guest!" she came into the dining room, leading Ms. Chatham in. "this is Ms. Chatham. She was just released from the hospital and she needs a place to rest and take her medicine. She's gonna do that here." Grace sat Ms. Chatham down at the table Logan was eating at. Seeing as he had the closest seat, Logan got up and let Grace sit Ms. Chatham in his seat.
Nicole, thrown off slightly, said, "of course she can stay here. Hello, I'm Nicole, owner and head chief here."
Ms. Chatham took Nicole's outstretched, "I really don't want to be a bother but Grace was so incisive. She can be very strong willed."
"Oh yes, I know. Grace, Kim, a word?"
Shooting a smile at Ms. Chatham who began to speak to Logan, the girls followed the black haired girl to the kitchen. Nicole turned and said, "You should have asked."
"You would have said no. look, because of Jerry's uncle, she got evicted from her boat house. We couldn't leave her alone." Kim quickly explained
"Jerry's uncle? Mean, rude, makes you want to bodily harm?" Nicole asked. At the girls' nod, Nicole sighed, "she can stay here until I can find an organization that would be a good fit for her. Ms. Chatham always seemed to know a bit more about me and Petra than she let on. As long as she doesn't say anything to the costumers, she can stay."
With smiles on their faces, Kim and Grace walked out to see Kelsey and Julie introducing themselves to Ms. Chatham. Nicole took the woman to the spare extra room they had while they tried to explain to Logan who the woman was.
"Why is she staying here though?" he asked
"The harbourmaster wants to move her boat out from harbour. He says she can't stay there. I thought when we didn't have work, maybe we could fix it up. I found she owes about $2000 in mooring fees. Think a gig could help us earn money?" Grace asked Kim
"Maybe. It could take a while."
"Doesn't matter. We're gonna help her, no matter what."
Almost hours later, Ms. Chatham was talking to Logan, who had just gotten back from working at the Shack.
"The boat I live on, the Lorelai, my husband and I bought it many years ago. He died almost 15 years ago now."
"You must be ancient." Logan said. A blow to the back of his head, given by his sister, greeted him a few seconds later
"Do you have any manners? I swear, I've never heard Jack yell so loud. Could you be anymore clumsy?" Kim ranted
Laughing, Ms. Chatham continued her conversation with Logan, "I couldn't get rid of the Lorelai though. She served me so well for so long. I'm sure that if I need to, the motor would start."
"And if it doesn't?" Logan asked, genuinely curious
"Well you have to make the water work for you. Right Kim?" Kim tensed at the knowing smile. She wanted to help Ms. Chatham but the thought of her telling Nicole or Logan she knew about their secret scared her more than it probably should of.
Before she could answer though, Nicole came in, the cordless phone in her hand. "Ms. Chatham, it's for you. It's the harbourmaster. Kim, your shift starts soon. Logan, you're helping."
As Logan began to sputter in protest, Ms. Chatham began to speak to the harbourmaster. All other conversation stopped when her voice began to get hysterical. As the conversation seemed to of ended, Ms. Chatham was left with an almost blank look on her face
"Ms. Chatham, what is it? What's wrong?"
"Th-they're taking my boat from me. They say i-it doesn't meet with their silly regulations. It's one of the last things I have left and they're taking it away from me."
The Pure Mermaid stood on the dock in front of the Lorelai, looking at the rusted boat. The paint was faded and now that she had a much better look at it, Grace began to wonder how Ms. Chatham had lived on it for so long.
"This is not going to work." Kelsey said, nudging the supplies they had to paint the boat.
"It could. Come on. A bit of paint and a talk with the harbourmaster and everything's fixed." Grace said, trying to stay positive
"Not to be a downer, but I think Ms. Chatham needs a completely new boat." Julie pointed out
"And you'd be right." The girls turned to the harbourmaster. "There's rust throughout the whole frame. My opinion, she's better off without it."
"And like you said, it's your opinion." The girls spun again to see Ms. Chatham walking past to get to her boat. The harbourmaster quickly stopped her. "Why are you trying to stop me? This is my home, I live here."
"Ms. Chatham, I know but the boat isn't sea worthy and has been impounded by the water police. Girls, I'm gonna have to ask you to take Ms. Chatham away from here."
"But my things. What about my treasure?" The conversation continued as they lead her out, past Jerry's uncle who wondered out loud about the treasure.
Thankfully after calming her down and having her help Nicole with dinner, Ms. Chatham seemed more intact.
"That was so good." Petra said
"Oh well, this was Ms. Chatham's recipe. Girls, why don't you go get Ms. Chatham comfortable in the living room while I get dessert. And don't forget your medicine."
The girls led Ms. Chatham to their person living room while Petra helped clean the table.
"Nicole, how long do you think Ms. Chatham will be here? I don't mind her here but this can't be permeant?" Petra asked
"No. the girls just care too much. They know this won't be forever. I've called around a bit and hopefully in a few days she can be somewhere where she can be happy."
Seaford Harbour
Ms. Chatham, with her bag on her shoulder, stopped at the entrance to the pier to see that the Lorelai still sat in its place, yellow caution tape surrounding it.
"Hello girl. Did you miss me?" she quickly got on the ship, after pulling the tape off and stood at the wheel. With a hopeful breath, Ms. Chatham turned the engine over. It sputtered but after it turned again, the engine turned on. Letting out a thankfully sound Ms. Chatham said, "It's been 20 years since I heard that sound." She pulled out and headed to open water, but not after accidently hitting Jerry's uncle's ski jet. "Oh, well he's not going to like that."
Next day
Logan was raiding the fridge before he had to go to work when Kim came running in, a fearful look on her face
"Logan, stop stuffing your face for 5 seconds. Have you seen Ms. Chatham? Her things aren't in her room and her medicine was sorted out for each day but the one for yesterday is still there."
Logan shrugged before continuing to stuff his face
Starting to get annoyed, Kim aimed every liquid in the fridge at Logan, who let out a scream, before being covered in bubbles and turning into a merman. "Maybe this hasn't sunken in, but Ms. Chatham is sick and being targeted. If I didn't have practise and have to drag you with me, I'd be out there looking for her. So please do me a favour and stop being so selfish."
Grace headed for the docks, hoping to find Ms. Chatham or even the Lorelai but couldn't help but not be surprised at the sight of them both gone. However she did see the damaged Jet Ski, that had was half sunken in the water. Feeling someone next to her, she turned to see Jerry's uncle seething at the sight of his destroyed jet ski.
"That old bag. That's it, if that's how she wants to play it, she'll get it." He stormed off to a nearby Zodiac boat when Jerry came rushing after him. He quickly stopped by grace, "get someone with a boat and come after us. I'll try and stop him as much as I can."
"What if he doesn't find her?"
"Everyone knows how much she talked about Mako Island. She's bound to be there."
"Of course she is," Grace said under her breath before turning back to Jerry, "make sure he doesn't do anything bad please. Go, hurry!"
The blue mermaid watched as Jerry quickly climbed on the boat and took off with his uncle before going to one of the only person she could think of.
Wasabi Surf Shack
Jack monitored Logan from the stage where the Surf Warriors were starting sound check. They were still waiting Jerry to arrive. Milton was taking advantage of resting when Grace came running in, quickly getting Kim's attention.
"Milton, I need you. Well more like your boat and I need you to drive it." She quickly explained before pulling him out after her.
"Wh-? Hey we have sound check." Jack complained, "Kim, what's she doing?"
"Uh…" Trying to scramble for an answer, Kim did the only thing she could think of. Every liquid in the café exploded, making Logan dive under the bar in hope not to get wet and completely pulling Jack's attention away
'Come on Grace. You better get Ms. Chatham quick. I don't have a good feeling about this.'
The Lorelai approached the Mako Mangroves when she heard the roaring engine from the Zodiac. Seeing that they were catching up, she tried to increase the speed when the engine stalled and brought the boat to a shuttering halt. Tense minutes passed until Jerry's uncle stood in front of Ms. Chatham seething.
"No one wrecks my jet ski. I want compensation, now."
"I don't have any money."
"Liar! You have treasure here don't you?"
"Uncle," Jerry started but was quickly interrupted
"Be quite boy! You keep trying to help the old hag, but you seem to be forgetting that its cause of me your family is even in a good place. Your father is never gonna get that promotion and that means you will be under my thumb for a long time. Now you, tell me where there treasure is, now!"
Jerry shoved his uncle aside when Ms. Chatham seized up, having another heart attack and began to fall. Jerry caught her and laid her on the bed and tried to take her pluses.
"Hey uncle, we might be under your thumb, but you might be going to jail if anything's happened to her." Jerry called over his shoulder. They heard another engine coming closer and looking through the window saw it was Grace and Milton. They slowed as they approached, but the older man jumped back into his boat before driving back to Seaford. "Why do feel surprised?" Jerry muttered under his breath. Grace and Milton quickly got on board and crowded Jerry.
"Is she ok?" Grace asked
"I think she has a pulse. We need to call the water police and the ambulance so they can get her." Jerry explained, getting up and going below deck. After looking around for a while, he found a bottle of pills and gave them to Grace
"This is the same prescription the doctors gave her at the hospital. Come on, we have to get her onto the boat."
Soon, Ms. Chatham was laid on towels on the floor of Milton's boat and Grace just got off the phone as Jerry was helping her onto the boat.
"Jerry, come on. You can explain what that jerk of a family member did to the police."
"You go ahead. I want to see if I can find Ms. Chatham's treasure. Something tells me it isn't gold and jewels like my uncle thinks. It has to be something she values more than that. It's the least I can do for her."
"But Jerry-" Milton tried to plead
"Look, she may not have a lot of time. When you get there, the water police will most likely be waiting for you before coming to get the boat. Tell them I'm waiting here to make sure it doesn't go off track. Just go."
The ginger and blue mermaid exchanged glances before nodding. Jerry gave a nod of his own before going back into the boat as the others took off. He went back under deck and looked around. He didn't notice he knocked a kerosene lamp that began to leak out oil that seeped to where the engine was. He opened a cupboard where another cupboard hid.
"Here we go." He opened it and was greeted to a mess of things. He picked up a random jewellery box and opened it. In it was a silver dew drop shaped locket with a birthstone on the top. Next to it was a silver ring with a blue ring.
"I think she knew who last owned my ring." Kim explained, showing off the sliver ring." The memory came to his head
"This must be it." Jerry closed the box and put it in his pocket and began to look for anything else, when the engine exploded and shook the whole boat, causing his to hit his head.
Water rushed in from the hole and quickly filled the boat. Dazed, Jerry pushed himself up and tried to get to the door. While swimming for a long time wasn't pleasant, it beat drowning in a houseboat. He tried to pull the door open but it was jammed. Water was rising higher and higher and Jerry looked for other ways out. Soon he was threading water, trying to keep his head above it and starting to panic slightly. He took his last big breath before the water completely covered the boat. He tried to door again but with the added fact of water pressure, the door wouldn't budge. Soon the lack of oxygen went to his head and Jerry soon saw only black.
Back with Milton and Grace, they were halfway back to Seaford, when they heard the explosion of the engine.
"Where's Jerry?" Grace asked, her fear evident in her voice
"I don't know. You don't think he's still in there?"
"I have to go and get him." Grace said
"But he could see you. Forget dyed ends and eye colour, it's not going to take him long to put it together."
"She doesn't have a choice," the two looked down to Ms. Chatham, who was finally awake, "do you Grace?"
"Make sure they find out what happens and make sure she gets to the hospital." Grace ordered before jumping into the water and super swam to the ship. She finally reached and looked through the window to see Jerry floating lifelessly. She tried to open the door but it wouldn't budge. Pulling away, Grace slammed her tail against the door twice, jolting Jerry awake enough to see the blue tail before he blacked out again
The next time he woke up, coughing up water and soaking wet, he was on the sore of Mako Island, Grace sitting next to him.
"Are you ok? You're an idiot, you know that? You could have died."
"The mermaid…she saved me." Jerry said, his voice hoarse
"I think the words your looking for is, 'thanks for helping me Grace. I'm sorry I worried you. I'll be careful from now on."
"You know, that mermaid is always around when I need her help. I need to know who she is."
Grace decided not to comment. All she knew was that things were going to get difficult from now on, even more than they already were.
Ms. Chatham was sent back to the Sea Shell Hotel after she was released and Nicole had found a home that could take her. While she was on the phone, Jerry visited.
He handed her a bouquet of flowers and a jewellery box. "Here, I know that it's not a lot, especially after what my uncle did, but it's the least I can do."
"Oh, thank you my dear boy. You didn't have to."
"Trust me; I think you'll like it." The Hispanic boy said with a knowing smile on his face. She opened it and gasped at the sight of her necklace and ring.
"M-my treasure. You found it."
"I knew that treasure for you wasn't gold or jewels. I had a feeling you were a more sentimental person. Plus after Kim mentioned you knew the owner of her ring, I had a feeling that was really important to you. I'm just sorry I couldn't find anything else."
Taking his hand, Ms. Chatham said, "No, this is more than enough. You could have died but you kept this safe. Thank you."
The girls came into the room, with smiles on their face. Seeing the questioning looks they were getting, Julie held up a copy of the newspaper
Nico Martinez arrested for destruction of property and other charges. His brother inherits his fortune
"Did you know that the police chief was at the Surf Shack during the incident? While Jack dealt with the sudden explosion of drinks, I told him what your uncle was doing and he was more than eager to arrest him. Apparently, Ms. Chatham always treated him with kindest respect and gave him such good advice when he felt like he had nowhere to go." Kim said
"Looks like you don't have to worry about that jerk of a family member anymore. Plus your family should be good till that promotion comes around." Grace said, smiling at them both.
Nicole poked her head in, "Ms. Chatham, the retirement village can pick you up tomorrow in the afternoon."
"Awesome. That means you can come see us perform tonight." Kim said
Jerry looked slightly hopeful at Ms. Chatham who sighed, "Well, why not one more night of excitement?"
