74) Abandoned

Three year old Death the Kid was running around the house, trying to find his stuffed teddy. The teddy was given to him by his mother, his adopted mother. Kid was to young to be told about how his mom wasn't biologically related to him, how he was just a part of Lord Death's soul since shinigami's can't reproduce like humans do. Kid looked under the couch for the fifth time in ten minutes and sat down, giving up on his search. Kid sniffed and started crying, tears and snot ran down his face as he let out loud screams.

"Kid? Kiddo, honey, are you okay?" A young and beautiful woman walked into the room where Kid was at. The woman knelt down in front of her adoptive son and pulled a tissue from her pocket, wiping the young shinigami's face. Kid stopped screaming when he looked into his mother's green eyes and was now hiccuping from crying so hard. "Now what's got you all upset for?" Kid's mother asked, running a hand through Kid's short hair.

"Teddy. I can't find him." Kid explained after several hiccups.

"I know where Teddy is at, come here." The woman picked up Kid and carried him to the bedroom her and Lord Death shared. Kid's mother sat him on the bed and then reached into her closet, pulling out Teddy.

"Teddy!" Kid cried out and held out his hands, asking his mother to hand him the bear.

"Teddy had a couple boo-boos I needed to fix up." Kid's mother explained and handed her son Teddy.

"Thanks, mommy!" Kid giggled and hugged his toy, feeling the newly stitched thread rub against his cheek.

"See, there's nothing the almighty mom-anator can't do!" Kid's mother cheered and scooped Kid back up, spinning the young boy around the room. "Is it a bird?"

"No!" Kid giggled.

"Is it a plane?"

"No!"

"It's super mom!" Kid giggled the whole ride to the kitchen and let out a loud laugh when he was swooped down and lightly tossed into the air.

"Again! Again!" Kid demanded after being caught.

"Alrighty!" Kid's mother tossed him in the air again, a little higher this time. Kid begged for more and was not disappointed as his head almost touched the ceiling.

"Now, what did I just walk into?" Lord Death asked as he entered his home, seeing his son being tossed in the air dangerously close to the ceiling fan.

"I'm a superhero!" Kid said. "Watch me fly!" Kid started to flap his arms, gesturing for his mother to toss him again.

"I think that's enough superhero for today." Lord Death said. "Isn't it past your bed time anyways?" Lord Death rubbed the top of Kid's head with his large cartoon-ish hand.

"That's not cool, man." Kid's mother laughed. "Superhero's don't have bed times." She said in a silly voice and bounced her son in her arms, making him laugh some more. "There's no need to be a hard-ass."

"No hard-ass!" Kid giggled.

"Oh lord!" Lord Death cried while Kid's mother started to laugh.

"Honey, don't say that. That's an adult word." Kid's mother said while still laughing.

"Let's go put Kiddo to bed." Lord Death sighed and followed his wife to Kid's bedroom.

"I'm not tired." Kid pouted as he was tucked in by his father. "I wanna play."

"We'll play in the morning, I promise." Lord Death said.

"How about I sing you a little song." Kid's mother sat down on the edge of Kid's bed. "Lullaby, and good night, in the skies stars are bright." Lord Death stepped back ad watched his wife sing. "May the moon's silvery beams bring you sweet dreams." Kid's mother lightly rubbed her thumb against Kid's cheek, making the young shinigami's golden eyes start to close. "Close your eyes now and rest, may these hours be blessed." Kid's eyes were now shut and his breathing was beginning to slow down. "'Til the sky's bright with dawn, when you wake with a yawn." Kid's mother smiled when she saw that Kid was already out, happy that he could fall asleep so easily. "Night, honey." She kissed the top of Kid's head before leaving the room with Lord Death, shutting the light off and almost closing the door all the way.

"Mommy?" Kid opened his eyes and found that he was alone. "Mommy?" Kid grabbed his bear and crawled out of his bed, opening his door and finding all of the lights off except for his parent's bedroom. "Mommy? Daddy?" Kid rubbed one eye with a fist and neared the room, flinching in shock when he heard his mother yell.

"Don't you dare tell me that I'm not careful with my son!" Kid whimpered and stayed where he was, too scared to move.

"I wasn't saying that, Amelia. All I was saying was that it was dangerous to be tossing Kid in the air so close to a ceiling fan." Lord Death said in a softer tone, his goofy voice gone.

"I knew what I was doing!"

"I know! I was just making a suggestion!" Lord Death raised his voice and it made Kid fall back, never having heard his father's voice so loud before.

"You're always just 'making a suggestion' and I'm sick of it!" Kid hugged Teddy tightly when he heard a loud crash.

"Don't throw things, you'll wake Kid!"

"Will you just listen to me!? You've been such a hard-ass since that one mission went a-stray and you lost all of those members!"

"Well, excuse me for not wanting to lose me son!"

"I'm not going to hurt him! I am not one of your members, I am no solider! I am your wife! Or...at least, right now I am."

"Amelia? What are you saying?"

"My mother was right. Never marry a man who has too much power for his small head to handle." Kid started crying at this point, scared and confused about what was happening right now.

"Wait, honey, let's talk about this."

"We always try talking about it, but you're too hard-headed to hear me! You're mind is too focused on Death City and I can't stand here knowing I'm just another part of your job! I don't want to be in the way of you protecting everyone!"

"Wait!"

"No. I'm done waiting. I'm done being second to everything in your life. Me and Kid should come first, but we don't. Maybe if I just left, you'd be better."

"Don't say that!" Kid heard his father's voice crack.

"You know it's true. I love you and I love Kid. But I can't be in a house where I feel like I'm not important enough or that everything I do will be criticized."

"I can-"

"You can't do anything, Lord Death." Kid could feel the harshness in his mother's voice. "It's who you are and it's how you have to be. I'm sorry. I'll call for my things."

"Amelia!" Kid's mother opened the door and saw Kid crying on the floor right outside of their room.

"Kid!"

"Mommy!" Kid scrambled to his feet and hugged his mother's legs. "Why were you and daddy screaming?" He sobbed.

"It's nothing you need to worry about, go back to bed."

"But..."

"I'll come back, okay?" Kid's mother hugged him before getting out and walking out the front door.

She never came back

Kid, now seventeen, was staring into his strange green drink that tasted of several different fruits that weren't green. He snapped out of his memory when he was nudged lightly.

"Hey Kiddo, you alright?" Black-Star asked, his arm around Kid's shoulder.

"Yeah...yeah." Kid took the straw of his drink and stirred it.

"You sure? You've been staring at your slushie for a while." Maka said.

"Yeah, man. You need to talk about it?" Soul asked.

"Do I need to hit a bitch?" Black-Star asked with a laugh.

"My mother." Kid said softly. The table was silent for a moment.

"I..." Black-Star looked at Tsubaki for some help.

"I'm sorry guys. I was just thinking about the last time I saw my mother...before she abandoned me." Kid said, taking a sip of his drink.

"Well, don't think about that." Patty said bluntly.

"Yeah, don't worry about her when you've got the almighty Black-Star's here." Black-Star kissed Kid's cheek and the shinigami put his hand on the star's face, pushing him away.

"Don't remind me." Kid said.

"You know you love me!" Black-Star ducked under Kid's hand and hugged him.

"Liz, help!" Kid called.

"Sorry, can't hear you over my slushie." Liz chuckled.

"Thanks." Kid rolled his eyes. He tried to pry Black-Star off ff him and ended up falling out of the bench he was sitting on, thankfully he had put his drink down.

"Need help up?" Black-Star grabbed Kid's arm and lifted him up, his feet leaving the ground for a second before landing. "Kiddo?" Black-Star asked when Kid started laughing. "Did I hurt ya?"

"Dumb-ass." Kid said before kissing Black-Star.

"Gross!" Soul called while the others laughed.

Not as sad as I thought it was going to be, but it's sooooo cute!
