That's what friends are for

They say two things undo the greatest of men: women (he had gotten his bitter share from that)

and a friend who gets closer than should be.

He never believed the second, not until Stefan's hands were onto his chest stopping his heart.

Guess what? It hurt more than women do.

They used to say friends look after each other, hold each other's backs.

They used to say the earth was flat.

All fibs.

Friends stab you in the back,

That's what friends are for.

He remembers their time together, he remembers vividly how they used to hang out and indulge in fun, and he remembers a whole lot of things they shared together. He remembers that glint of understanding in Stefan's eyes, the one that told him I am here; I am your brother, the one that vowed I will always stick by your side.

But with the echo of his own slowing heart, the voice of his heart beats that now fills his ears, that voice that becomes sharp and clear by each dragging second, an echo of their laughter together fades away from his memory, flies off like dandelions in the wind until all the laughter is gone far beyond retrieve.

All gone.

He once had a friend, now he is gone.

It was real traumatic; he sure had pushed Klaus as far as could be, yet there was that tiny part in him that really liked the persistent thousand year old vampire.

The vampire who was so hauntingly and obsessively loyal, the one who wanted to keep all the vampires he loved together, there was that tiny part that appreciated the friend who never left him, the guy who didn't give up on him –unlike his own brother-.

Sure as hell he was a psychotic sadistic killer, yet still he could relate to him, he could see him as his a really tormented being.

He could see him as his friend.

They say friends help each other through troubles, they say friends keep each other sane, they say friends save each other from the deadliest of dangers.

So when he puts his hands onto his chest, he believes he is saving him, from himself.

He once had a friend, now he is dead.
