You're a damsel, and this is certainly distress, so you wait around in a tower and perfect your makeup and hair. But Prince Charming is taking too long, and you get a bit bitter. But that's alright, because the distress justifies it. And then you start snapping at your ladies-in-waiting, but it's okay because you have a distressful back story and a bitch with a back story is a justified bitch. But years pass and Prince Charming still hasn't shown up and the ladies-in-waiting stop coming and you tell yourself you don't care, that the prince will come and he will understand and everything will be perfect. But then a brandshinynew princess shows up and you're thrown into the cellar and you scratchclaw the stone door but it doesn't budge until one day, one of your old ladies-not-waiting-anymore opens it and you crawl out. And you hair is a mess and your mascara is running and your lip gloss has faded but you swear you will destroy the brandshinynew princess brat that did this to you. But the princess is now a queen. You refuse to let it stop you. And once you topple her throne, all your subjects hate you and still no prince comes to marry you even though you are now a queen and who doesn't want a gorgeous-damsel-in-distress-queen? And (perhaps) one day you will look in the mirror and ask the reflection when you went from damsel-in-distress to villain.
