Snow Days

He was only seen in the corner of Norman's eye.

Other kids were running around in the winter cold, making the most of the first snow. Alvin and his Meatheads were doing their best to hit someone once in a while. Courtney, after she told Mom that she despised the cold for screwing with her hair, was seen not far off making a matching purse for her snowgirl. Neil, who could barely put his arms down in his red winter coat, was busy shielding his brother Mitch and best friend Salma so they could finish 'Base Gamma'. Norman even spotted the General and his war horse trying to teach tactics to the other children, who, naturally, didn't listen.

Norman chuckled, shifting his snow shovel to one side so he could wave at his friends. They were all too engrossed in their play to mind him. It didn't matter. Winter in Blithe Hollow had just started, there were plenty more snow days to join them in.

Besides, he had a job right now. He continued on the frozen sidewalk, just glancing back to catch another look. A shiver ran through the air as he saw someone go by.

It was a teenager skating past, barefoot in the icy street, with white hair an wielding a staff. He ran by like a cold wind that steals the breath from a person's lungs. Norman wasn't sure if he was a ghost or not, but he never knew the answer. A flurry of activity followed the teen's appearance. The kids from across the street had finally made enough snowballs while Alvin had ran out of his. Mitch and Salma finished their fort and generously squeezed Neil in it right before the attack began. The teen was gone.

Norman smiled into his scarf, shivered, and kept walking.
