Author's Notes: I know that I haven't written in a long while but am now back in my full writing compacity as long as I make more time to do so and my health continues to improve. Thank you for your patience. Yes, I changed a few things about the second chapter but hope this is even better.
Chapter 2: Eventful first day at School
The morning had seemed to come very early for the couple that had indeed survived the island with their research having been saved within their own lab. It was now a few years since the explosion with Anton Mercer's death. Tommy Oliver had continued his work despite the setback upon learning what his old mentor had been doing at the time or rather had tried to do. It wasn't just that he had once again been betrayed or seemed like he was with his research being stolen by the older man, but to create such creatures?
This had of course drawn Jason and Tommy to create the necessary defenses within their lab and for the safety of Earth itself. Tommy had created special guards within the lab as well as created something special for those that were meant to protect mankind from such creatures. These would become the new power rangers and defend all from the forces of darkness. Tommy had just finished the final touches on his work when he heard someone behind him slowly closing in. The alarms hadn't been set and were still being worked on, so he was only made aware by the soft footfalls behind him. His short dark hair stood on end and before he knew it, the former ranger knocked the person down to the ground.
The soft grunt and thud to the floor was what alarmed both Jason and their good friend Hayley. One being on the ground under the startled former ranger and the other holding a cup of coffee with a seemingly bemused expression.
"Really, if I known you were like this before coffee, I would have knocked Oliver." The lovely red-haired woman said with a smirk before letting out a slight pained grunt while removing herself from the cold floor. Dusting herself off, the lovely tech watched them both for a moment. The shocked expression on Tommy's face and the amused one of his husband. Seeing the steamy cup of coffee in Jason's hand, she moved closer to snag it from him, sipping on it while sitting on the cold hard surface of on of the cave's platforms. "Thanks, you shouldn't have Jason."
"Uh, well that was for Tommy but yeah sure I can get him some more as long as he gets himself ready to go."
Dusting himself off, the dark-haired man's eyes drifted to that of his husband and former power ranger. "Ready for what?" He then wondered what he had forgotten this time, only to quickly grab his notes with a groan. "Oh no, don't tell me I'm going to be late for school."
Jason chuckled following Tommy as he ran up the stairs towards the main part of the house before handing him a new cup of coffee. "Yeah, like old times huh?"
'Not the best way to meet your new boss, you know Tommy." Hayley smirked sipping her own coffee that she had stolen from Jason's hands earlier. "Mmm, needs some sugar you know."
Tommy just gave her a look that would tame anyone save for a select few while he grabbed his briefcase, put the coffee in a travel mug and running out to the car but not before getting a morning kiss. "I'll get there in time and keep an eye on her will you Jase?"
Jason waved while Tommy went off to work and knew that this was going to be a whole new beginning but not how much of a beginning it would be. "Don't I always?"
Hayley walked towards the front door before walking outside to stand by Jason still sipping her coffee, having had the brilliant idea of putting the missing sugar in the brown liquid she adored so much in the morning. "You know you don't have to babysit me, the morphers are done and besides, how can anyone find the cave anyway?"
"Stranger things had happened Hayles."
Tommy looked around the campus of the new high school and wondered if he truly was ready for this considering, he was not used to teaching students but rather digging up fossils and rocks. This was a new challenge, but it was also a great cover since he and Jason knew that the rocks had been found near this town in the desert for some reason. He had been drawn to them and wanted to be certain that if trouble came, that he and Jason could get it rather quickly. There had to be a reason why he had been drawn to those dino-gems and why Jason was now someone with the power to heal from touching the very first one they had found years ago.
The school bell rang just as he adjusted his glasses and headed towards the main office to meet with the new principal. Walking down the white hallways, made him feel almost a sense of dread and foreboding knowing that as a teenager, he had been forced to take that long walk before but why did this still bother him even as an adult? He should have such reservations about his new boss, should he? Heading towards the office, a young woman with dark hair and red glasses, stopped his progress and lured him past the office towards the classrooms. This was going to be quite the meeting as this woman looked just about his age and Tommy began to wonder if this wasn't going to be as bad as he thought meeting her.
"Doctor Oliver, I'm principal Randall. " The woman's voice seemed to ooze with cold authority as she spoke while they walked towards his classroom.
Wanting to be friendly to the woman, even with the goosebumps flowing on his skin under his jacket, Tommy turned to look at her while he politely said hello to the students returning after the long hot summer break. "It's nice to meet you. This is your first day too isn't it?" He extended his hand towards her in greeting, but she didn't take it in kind. Instead he watched her open a large black blinder looking down at what he discovered was he application towards becoming a member of her faculty.
"Yes, and I'm still trying to figure out why a doctor of paleontology, would come all the way to Reefside to teach science to teenagers."
Tommy tried to continue to remain as friendly as possible to the woman but had the feeling that she may give him some trouble and watched her cold smile once again appear knowing that this was going to be quite a year. The former ranger could still smell trouble on anyone, and she was sending off alarm bells in his head at that moment. "Guess, I'm looking for some peace and quiet."
"So, you became a high school teacher. This doesn't really make a whole lot of sense now, does it Dr. Oliver?" Principal Randall walked closer to her newest teacher and Tommy remained calm wanting to at least get along with the woman before class. This was his first day and to make a bad first impression wasn't on his mind that would follow him for the coming year.
"You, know, I was thinking maybe we should get together over coffee sometime and then you can fill me in on what you expect from me."
The woman almost laughed and shook her head. "I expect nothing but for you make it hard for them. Painful if at possible. You know what I'm getting at Doctor Oliver? If they smile, you know you are doing something wrong. And besides I don't have time to have coffee and coddle my staff. If you'll excuse me, I'm off to find my first little truant. We can talk later, oh and Doctor?"
Tommy paused and felt the cold wind blowing in his direction once again when she spoke on how to teach in her school, he turned before entering his class when she spoke before leaving him alone. This was one way to feel winter approaching whenever he was near this woman. "Yes?"
"I don't think coffee with a teacher would be appropriate since it says here, you're married but do me a favor, make them squirm." The woman left the hallway smirking, clearing determined to make Reefside High a living hell if she could.
"No, I was only trying to be friendly." Tommy spoke under his breath heading into his classroom, his ears ringing at the noise of the children all speaking at once. They were talking about their summer activities, friends, and other things that he knew teenagers loved about summer and hated about school.
The class seemed to settle down once he had entered the room and called for some sense of order but it was clear that his youth was in question or so it seemed to one girl and yet it seemed as he called role call that someone was indeed missing. Today was going to be a long day and he knew it. It was only the first period and already he was already having a long day.
The bell had already rung but that didn't stop two of the teenagers from missing their first period with one quivering with the large net with the far edge of the field to another boy with dark hair watching him. The other teenager watched his friend and sighed while he slowly moved a smooth red ball with his foot. "Aw come on stop quivering already. It's going to be fine."
"Aren't you scared of getting caught? Come on let's go." Connor smirked and lifted his foot, sending the red ball towards the net at a good speed and after spinning into the air rocketing it towards the net. The boy just quivered in the net and let out a squeak with the ball sailing past his head. "Dude, you're supposed to try and stop it."
"You sure we're not gonna get in trouble for this? I mean the bell already rang and it's the first day besides I heard the new principal is crazy."
Connor watched his friend with a smirk and shot a second ball at the net watching his friend cowering within the framed structure. He was so focused on his kicking that he never noticed the dark-haired woman coming towards him until it seemed too late to think before he spoke. "She's a woman. And remember women are just grown up girls. Need I say more?"
Principal Randall smirked coldly walking closer to the soccer field, the smooth crisp grass tickling her legs as she walked towards them opening her black book thrilled to have found her first detention. It was exciting and gave a delightful shiver down her spine. "I think you've said enough, Mr. McKnight."
"Principal Randall, uh hi, I've heard some great things about you." Connor had been more than confident but now he knew what he was more than likely in trouble and on the first day of school. "I can explain you know."
"Very well, explain yourself and tell me why I shouldn't give you detention for skipping first period?"
Connor looked down at the ball and then had watched his friend run or rather hobble in fear wearing the heavy padding. "Thanks, bud for leaving." He muttered under his breath but managed to keep his composure. "Well I have to practice. I mean I am the star of the soccer team."
"And that is supposed to mean what exactly? Extra curricular activities don't excuse you from class. Now move." When Connor just stood there, she let out a loud bellow that would make even the most hardened criminal jump. "I said move it!"
The walk back towards the office wasn't without event it seemed while the classes were no longer in cession, lunch was a time for the students to unwind but with the new principal, everything was in her radar. She continued to torment her first detention with a sound lecture while they walked towards the main building when she heard what sounded like singing. It wasn't long before she had found her next victim in the form of a teenaged girl singing on her school grounds. No this wouldn't do. She was here to break their spirits and music just wasn't going to work with this plan at all. "Miss Ford, I'm afraid you need written permission to perform on school grounds. Now let's go."
Kira had been playing her music when she new warden as some were already beginning to call her had approached but just because this woman pretty much had told her stop wasn't going to shut her up. "Seriously? Are you aware that kids that can play an instrument have a better chance at getting into college?"
"Well, you're hardly college material then now are you Miss Ford? Now come on and what the hell?!" Just as she finished addressing one student did, she need to discipline a third once the cold spray of water shot up into her face while she was speaking letting out a loud shriek. It wasn't long before all third of the students were caught in her ice-cold web and now sitting in her office, all completely drenched say for one student.
Ethan James had been successful in his endeavors but getting caught wasn't in his plans for that day. It had been on poor timing but as one had said, you couldn't succeed without the effort. The sprinkler system had been pure genius only problem was he had gotten caught. Next time, he would be more careful with his execution of all experiments. "Principal Randall, I'd just like to mention the fact that there's absolutely no hard evidence linking me to that unfortunate sprinkler incident."
"Save it for Judge Judy, Mr. James. The three of you have detention for one week starting today. Now if there are no further questions?"
Tommy had just begun to wrap up his day when he had texted Jason letting him know that he was going to be a little late on his way home hoping to check out the museum on the way home. There was something not right there plus who didn't love museums? Once he left his classroom, he heard the protesting voices ahead of him to be lured into the main office. There were three teenagers and a very wet principal arguing. Well rather, two wet teenagers, one dry one and a very wet principal. "Uh hi what happened her?"
"Oh, nothing but a sprinkler accident. How was your first day Doctor Oliver?"
Tommy felt a smile coming to his face and was already back into believing that this whole teaching thing wasn't so bad and began to think perhaps the sprinklers were what the ice queen needed to warm her up. He also tried to hide his amusement knowing that this is something Billy would have done back when they were in school if they hadn't become rangers of course. "The kids are great. Not a single problem."
"Good, you will be seeing more of them in detention."
Tommy felt that dread he had felt when he was younger with their school principal, especially when he had brought back corporal punishment in detention feeling like a deer caught in the headlights. "Um ah do you mind telling me what I did?"
Randall watched her new teacher squirm and smirked despite the shiver she now felt from the wet clothes on her skin. "No, you're in charge of it today."
"No, uh actually I have plans to go to the museum out of town."
"Perfect, bring the little monsters with you. That should be enough torture for them. You've all met, I trust? Well, enjoy you little outing.
Tommy watched her head back into her office clearly to change and watched the kids. "Um so do you guys like museums?" Yeah today was just getting better already.
The drive out of town seemed almost excruciatingly quiet but as they got closer to the museum and further away from the school, did the kids begin to show their personalities with Tommy smirking a little. The museum was a large white building but really seemed to excite Ethan had been the life side Tyrannosaurus Rex standing at the entrance and if Tommy hadn't known better, he'd think it was almost real since he had help create it. Well that and the fact that it did still look plastic but hey it was still impressive. He had given the museum some input on the statue along with Jason, so it was at least cool looking. The one other thing that had caught his attention was the fact that museum was closed, and he had been told that it would be open by now weeks ago.
Tommy was only watching and hearing the kids for a moment when he noticed that the museum was closed. "That's weird."
"Great no museum for us. "Perked up Kira and grinned. "Let's go home."
"Tell you what, why don't you guys go and look around the grounds. If any of you find anything prehistoric, I'll cancel detention for the rest of the week."
"Sweet, but what are you gonna do?"
Tommy looked at the ominous building and headed towards the gravel path. "I'm going to take a look around." The children wandered off and it seemed just as well to the former ranger. Something was going on and with them out of the line of fire if there was any danger, the better. Taking out his cell phone just in case when he walked closer to the building seeing a sign that made his blood run cold.
UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT
IN CASE OF EMERGENCY CALL ANTON MERCER INDUSTRIES
He immediately grabbed his phone and gulped a bit quickly dialing Jason. "Jase, you won't believe this, but I am at the museum and it is closed but the weird part is it's run Anton Mercer Industries."
"Wait what? That impossible. Well come home and we can check it out later. I don't think it's best to check on your own."
"Yeah I'll get the kids and get out of her…what happened to the dinosaur?" Tommy noticed that something was missing before he heard the loud roar and licked his lips nervously. "Uh Jase, I'll call you back. I have a T-Rex after me." He hung up and ran to his car starting the engine wondering how the hell this day could get any worse.
