Memories

Dimitri glanced at the Rose Gold Rolex and rubbed his eyes. It was late and he was the only person in the building. He hadn't noticed the time flying by but the house didn't seem the same now that Rose wasn't there anymore.

He sighed and ran a hand through his dark hair. Dimitri turned off the computer screen and gathered his things, glanced around the room one last time before hitting the lights.

The entire floor was in total darkness and looked almost eerie as Dimitri pressed the button and waited for the doors of the lift to open. He checked his watch as he stepped into the lift making him remember a time when he had been the happiest he could have ever been….

Rose bit her bottom lip as she read the recipe. She hated baking but wanted to do something nice for her husband on his birthday. Olena had been so kind as to write down the recipe for her.

She grabbed a spatula, bowls and all the ingredients and placed them on the kitchen counter. Then she measured the flour with the scales before sieving it into a bowl.

She felt something push her from behind and looked down to see the puppy looking up at her. The dog had her ball in her mouth wanting some attention.

"Oh Lola not now!" She said tossing the dogs half chewed ball out into the foyer.

Rose turned her attention back to what she was doing and Lola raced out of the kitchen to fetch the ball as if her life depended on it! Seconds later she was back looking for her owner to throw the ball again.

Lola dropped the ball at Rose's feet, barked loudly and wagged her tail. But Rose was busy cracking eggs and trying not to get any shell into the cake mix. Once she had the cake in the oven and the door firmly closed she turned her attention back to Lola.

Rose checked the time before grabbing Lola's lead.

"Let's go for a walk."

Lola barked loudly and circled around and around, making Rose laugh loudly. Once outside they took off in the direction of the park. Rose had to run to keep up with the little puppy that was happy to be outside again.

Once they were through the parks red gates, Rose knew it was safe to untied Lola's lead from her collar.

"Ok, go play!" Rose said.

The puppy barked loudly and raced down the little path towards the pond. Rose chuckled as she followed Lola. She sat on a nearby bench and watched as the dog darted in and around people.

She drifted off into her own little world listening to the birds singing in the trees and keeping an eye on that crazy puppy of hers. After awhile she pulled out her phone and remembered that the cake was in the oven.

Rose let out a loud whistle and as soon as Lola heard it she was right back at her owners feet.

"Time to head back."

"Awwww, don't give me does sad eyes!"

Lola whined as Rose attached the lead to her collar. She patted the dog on the head.

"We'll come back tomorrow."

Rose pulled up her hood as she felt a drop of rain. The weather had begun to change as they headed home.

She turned the key in the front door but before she stepped inside the house Rose heard the fire alarm going off!

"Noooo!" she cried.

Rose coughed as she opened the oven door. The cake was ruined. She felt like crying but it was no use. She dumped the cake in the bin and opened all the windows.

"Oh why won't you shut up!"She muttered as she hit the alarm.

"Excuse me?"

"Lissa? Oh boy you have no idea how glad I am to see you."

Rose hugged her best friend tightly as she stepped down from the ladder. Lissa peered into the kitchen, "I can see that! What happened in here?" Lissa asked.

"Don't ask." Rose replied.

"What time is Dimitri home at?"

"In an hour."

"You go have a shower, I'll take care of this….mess!" Lissa said with a chuckle as she pushed her best friend in the direction of the stairs.

"What would I do without you?"

"I have no idea!" She replied.

Rose could hear more voice as she headed back downstairs again. She pushed open the kitchen door to see not just her best friend Lissa but also Dimitri's mother, Olena, who was busy cracking eggs, smiled when she saw her daughter-in-law.

"Oh you guys! You didn't have to do this!" Rose cried.

"Глупая девчонка, всегда делают беспорядок" Yeva said.

Rose turned and faced Dimitri's grandmother, "What did you say?"

"Rose can you help me in the living room?" Viktoria asked as she pulled her away from her grandmother.

"Yeah, sure."

Viktoria started to blow up some balloons with Rose as Karolina, Sonja and Lissa hung the banner that read "Happy Birthday Dimka!" After all the room was decorated Rose showed them the present that she had bought for her husband.

"I hope he likes it!"

"Well if he doesn't…I'll take it.." Christian said.

"Don't listen to him, he'll love it" Lissa said, playfully slapping Christian on the head.

"Thanks Lissa."

She placed the beautiful Rose gold Rolex back into the small black and gold box and tied a deep gold ribbon around the box.

"I think I heard Dimitri's car in the driveway." Sonja said.

" Oh Christ everybody hide!" Rose cried.

"Quick! Someone turn off the lights!"

Viktoria hit the lights and everyone hid waiting to surprise Dimitri. Rose ducked behind the sofa just before Dimitri's key turned in the front door.

"Roza?"

Dimitri switched on the light in the living room and everyone jumped up and cried Surprise!

"Happy Birthday Comrade" Rose said as she stood on her tiptoes and kissed her husband on the cheek.

"Were you very sirpiesed Uncle Dimka?" Zoya asked.

Dimitri laughed and lifted his niece up into his arms. There were tears of laughter as people told funny stories about when Dimitri was younger. Rose smiled at the guests as she lifted the empty plates and headed into the kitchen to refill them. She didn't notice Yeva follow after as she was too busy opening the fridge and taking out the birthday cake that Olena had made. When she turned around the old woman was standing right behind her.

"What do you want now old woman?" Rose asked Dimitri's grandmother.

"упрямый ребенок"

"Why must it always be in Russian?" Rose said throwing her arms up in the air.

"Я вижу много боли, но радость вытекает боль." Yeva said and grabbed Rose's arm. She was strong for such an old lady.

"Семя займет время, чтобы вырасти в большого дерева"

"What are you on about?" Rose asked.

Yeva's grip loosened and Rose stepped back. She was a little frightened of the old woman though she would never admit this to anyone.

"I don't understand you're cryptic messages"

"Вы будете достаточно скоро." Yeva said before heading back into the other room.

The old woman was loosing it Rose thought to herself. She stood there leaning against the kitchen counter.

"You look puzzled, Roza." Dimitri said.

"It's that old woman!"

"My Grandmother?"

"Yes! I think she is plotting to kill me in my sleep.."

"Roza, she's harmless." He replied with a chuckle.

Dimitri kissed his wife on the forehead before taking the clean glasses from her and headed into the living room with them.

Rose looked up and saw her best friend's husband standing in the doorway.

"Candles?" Christian asked.

"Second drawer from the left."

"Got them."

Rose double-checked the living room to make sure Dimitri was still in there before grabbing the lighter and lighting the candles. She heard a buzzing noise and saw Dimitri's phone flashing on the kitchen counter. She picked it up and saw private number appear on the screen.

She pressed the green call button to answer,"Hello?"

"Hello?" Rose frowned as she heard the caller hang up.

Rose placed the phone back onto the counter where she found it and picked up the birthday cake.

"Who was that?" Christian asked.

Rose frowned again, "I have no idea."

Christian held the door open as Rose walked into the living room. The room grew silent as she began to sing "Happy Birthday" to Dimitri. Soon everyone was singing along too.

"Make a wish!" Someone cried out.

Dimitri laughed and blew out the candles.

"Speech!...Speech!"

Everybody laughed and Dimitri smiled and grew serious for a moment.

"I'd like to thank my family, my friends and lastly to my darling wife for arranging this fantastic party….I never suspected it! Either that or Roza is getting better at keeping secrets!"

"Are you gonna open your presents now Uncle Dimka?" Zoya asked, tugging on his trouser leg.

"Zoya!"
