Just focus on putting one foot in front of the other, I told myself. I could hear the footsteps of my parents, and the babbling and complaining from Ikki and Meelo behind me. I heard the small whimpers of baby Rohan coming from my mothers arms.
My family and I were in the mountains that surround Republic City. Shortly after Lin Beifong had sacrificed herself, and the Equalist airships were off our trail, Daddy had decided that Oogi was too noticeable to make our escape on. He concluded instead that we had to walk over the mountains, and meet Oogi and the other sky bison on the other side. We couldn't use our gliders, either, as Mommy, Meelo, and Rohan didn't have ones, and it wasn't safe for Rohan anyway, since he was so little.
It had been a long long day, and all of us were very tired, especially Mommy. It was only the thought of my family, and how I was escaping to protect them, that kept me going. I was so tired. I hoped we were almost going to stop for the night.
Just then a valley appeared in front of us. I could see it from the top of the mountain we were on. A big river ran through the valley.
"On the other side of that river, that's where we'll stop for the night." Daddy said wearily. I heard Mommy groan quietly in relief. Even Ikki wasn't talking, and Meelo looked like he was ready to collapse, his seemingly endless energy gone.
I was walking ahead, wanting desperately to get across the river so we could rest. I stepped onto the bridge. It was long, and I couldn't quite see the end of it. When I got to the end, however, it was not the blissful resting place I'd imagined.
Out of the gloom stepped a man, with a big mask covering his face, and a red dot in the center of where his forehead should've been. Next to him was a man with big sticks that sizzled dangerously, and many people with masks and glowing green eyes. I knew these people from pictures in the papers. Equalists.
"Daddy, Mommy! Ikki, Meelo, Rohan! Go back! It's a trap!" I shouted back to my family.
"Jinora!" I heard Daddy's voice yell. In an instant, he was at my side. He sent out an airbending blast that knocked several of the green-eyed-mask people off their feet. I saw a couple other people run over to Daddy, and hit him with some quick jabs on his back. He immediately fell to the ground.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw more green-eyed-mask people, who I realized now were chi blockers, run over to Ikki and Meelo, and knock them to the ground as well.
"Take the woman carefully. Don't harm the baby. They're non-benders." I heard the masked man grunt. More chi blockers ran to Mommy, and tied her up as well. I just stood there, frozen with fear.
"Take the oldest girl, too" the masked man muttered. I realized who he was at that moment. Amon.
I felt a zap of electricity coursing thorough my body. I could hear myself screaming involuntarily. Fuzzily, I felt the pain lift, and the man with the two sticks step back from me. I fervently wished to myself that this would be like one of my books, that Korra would come save us, that all would be okay in the end.
Then everything went black.
