Epilogue
*Bella*
She sits at home, trying not to think about the fact that her loved ones, her family are fighting for their lives while she sits at home helpless. Her Dad had gone out ages ago, leaving her pacing the rooms, waiting for a sign that everyone was okay; it was over- anything.
*Billy*
He taps his fingers against the table in a quick rhythm. He needs somewhere to put all his nervous energy. Charlie is here, watching the match. Every now and then, something would happen on the screen, causing the officer to react, but as much as he tried, Billy couldn't bring himself to join in. A couple of times Charlie would ask if there was something up, but Billy would just shake his head. How could he explain that he was waiting, waiting for the news of his son who had only just stepped into the role of Alpha? He couldn't ruin Charlie's obliviousness, it would be wrong.
*Charlie*
He wasn't stupid. First Bella this morning, all edgy and stressed out, and now Billy too. He could only guess that it had something to do with Jacob. He pushed away the thought- he didn't really want to know. Every now and then there would be a howl from the woods, not far off. Every time the sound reached their ears, Billy would flinch and look up in the direction, as if he was expecting a wolf to run through the front door or something.
*Edward*
He saw Jacob fall down hurt, and for a moment the thought occurred to him that he should help but he shrugged it off. Instantly he regretted it and ran over to his side. But Sage had reached him first. She was howling in agony and Edward could feel the pain through her thoughts. Jacob was dying. He felt as if he should be doing something to help, but deep down he knew there was nothing he- or anyone else- could do.
*Billy*
An ear-splitting howl pierced the air and even Charlie jumped. Billy's heart instantly dropped. The howl was full of pain and loneliness… he could only guess that one of their own had…died. He could barely bring himself to think it. He could no longer go on pretending everything was okay. He picked up the phone and rang the Elders.
*Sage*
She was vaguely aware of Adam speaking to her, Seth and Edward beside him. But she couldn't focus on any of it; everything had gone blurry with tears. She was being dragged away from Jacob's lifeless body. She let them take her away, she no longer cared. All she could think was that he was only just Alpha, only just becoming himself. That same thought swirled around in her head over and over.
*Adam*
"Alpha…. He only just became Alpha….It can't be right….." Sage was sobbing in his arms. His little sister, completely broken. She repeats herself over and over. He says nothing just holds her tightly in his arms, staring sympathetically at anyone who looked at them. Edward stayed with her, oddly enough. Edwards pale fingers gripping her hand fiercely. The whole time, the vampire had said not a word, but Adam felt for some reason he could trust him. He quickly sent a thought to Edward, who nodded. Adam squeezed his sister before passing her over to Edward to hold. It didn't feel right, but it didn't seem completely wrong either.
*Charlie*
Billy punched someone's number into the phone. "Quill, who is it?" He demanded. His body crumpled in his chair. "Oh God… Quill…" His voice broke and tears started to run down his face. Charlie stood and joined his friend. "It's Jacob, he's … gone." Billy choked out. Charlie frowns in confusing. "Where, Billy?" he asks him softly. His friend shakes his head. "He's dead, Charlie…" Charlie was never one for the emotional moments or anything, but still, he grabbed Billy into a hug, and they stayed like that for God knows how long.
*Edward*
After ages of just holding Sage's burning hot body and murmuring soft, kind words in her ear she stirred and pulled away. She looked down at her lap and whispers a thank you to him. He squeezes her hand which is still in his. "I know what I have to do." She tells him.
*Sage*
Sage knew what she needed to do. It felt right, and she knew that everyone would support her in this. Sam would be fine with it, he would understand. She knew that even though it was the end of something huge, it was the beginning of something even bigger. Something that would make Jake proud, it would serve his memory well; show him that she will never stop loving him. She feels it start to own her, she stands a little taller, feels just that little better. She looks Edward in the eyes and he stares knowingly back at her. They both know that now when she speaks, her voice won't break. So she says it, fully completing the transition. "I'm the Alpha now."
