Chapter 4: The Unlikely Hero

"You'll what?"

"You're a witch. You're life is usually in danger, as are your friend's lives. I will remain with you until I have saved a life. I pay my debts Ms Bennet."

"About as well as you keep your promises I'm sure!" she quipped.

Elijah sighed. "I have explained why I broke my promise to kill Niklaus. My family comes before everything Ms Bennet. I will not apologise for that." He then changed the subject back to why he was there. "So, will you allow me to accompany you to Vermont?"

Bonnie rolled her eyes and glared at the original vampire. "I don't want or need your help! You can however, repay your debt to me by going back to that vapid whore of yours and leaving me alone!"

A delighted grin appeared upon her face. "Tell me, has she hit on Kol yet? You do know she has a thing for brother's right?" She giggled purposefully. "Then again, maybe that's what you're into? You are a family man after all."

The vampire's eyes went dark at the crude implication but before he could respond the witch turned on her heel, crossed the road and got into her car.

The journey to the Brattleboro's farmer's market in Vermont was uneventful. Bonnie wondered if the original a-hole would follow her but she had a feeling that she had put him in his place and that he had given up.

She arrived at the market at about 12.30pm. She didn't know exactly where she was supposed to meet Lucy but she wasn't worried. She just knew they would find each other.

As she wandered through the market she felt a sense of peace pass over her. Life was so simple here. She stopped at every stall to admire the produce. There were fresh fruits and vegetables, plants, pottery, pickles, soaps, candles, handmade jewellery and delicious smelling food at the food stalls. Her stomach rumbled and she decided to buy the fresh strawberry crepes from the crepe vendor.

She sat at a wooden table and devoured her meal, enjoying every burst of natural sweetness and the creaminess of the ice cream that came with the crepes. When she finished her lunch she watched a mother and daughter at a table nearby admiring the jewellery they had bought. She felt a sting of jealously and wondered if circumstances were different, if that could have been her and her own mother.

She suddenly felt a presence behind her and whipped around. Her instincts had told her they were a threat and she expected to see the original vampire. It was Lucy. She was dressed in dark jeans and an aqua top that revealed her shoulders.

"Hey cuz! I told you you'd see me again."

Bonnie's face split into a wide grin.

"Lucy!" Clearly her instincts were off, she thought as she practically leapt in her cousin's direction.

They embraced. Bonnie was so happy to see the witch that she ignored the fact that she didn't have the same feeling she had had the last time when she had met Lucy. Then she had felt like she was with family. This time it was different but she barely noticed. They sat down at the table where Bonnie had eaten and Bonnie explained how she thought she was in danger and how Klaus' brother had followed her. Lucy had assured her that she was most welcome to stay with her and her coven until Bonnie regained her powers.

Bonnie hopped in her car and watched Lucy get into hers across the parking lot and she began to follow her back to her house.

Fifteen minutes later she found herself following Lucy onto a dusty unmade road that led to a forest area. She briefly thought it was odd and then thought the coven she lived with might live deep in the woods away from suburbia. It made sense since witches felt most at peace amongst nature. Lucy suddenly stopped the car and got out, so Bonnie did the same. She looked around but there wasn't a house in sight.

Bonnie heard the gravel crunch under her feet as she walked up to her cousin who had a very serious expression on her face.

"Lucy what's wrong?" she asked, concerned. The tall brunette swallowed nervously.

"Bonnie I'm so sorry," she apologised.

"Why? What - "

Bonnie was cut off by a sharp blow to the head and suddenly everything was dark.

When she came to Bonnie was lying flat and all she could feel was the throbbing pain on the right side of her head. She tried to lift her hand to feel whether it was bleeding but she couldn't. Her eyes shot open in panic. There were three figures hovering over her, one of them was Lucy.

She noticed that Bonnie was awake.

"Don't worry cuz. It'll all be over soon." She stated simply.

"I don't understand, what are you doing? Why can't I move?"

Lucy lifted Bonnie's arm up. "We've spelled this bracelet so that you can't move your limbs so there's no point in trying." Bonnie could see the bracelet and feel her cousin's touch as she held her arm up but she couldn't do anything about it. The bracelet was a simple silver band that held a rectangular ruby stone across the middle. She would have thought it beautiful if it wasn't binding her ability to move.

"Why are you doing this?" Bonnie whispered as tears of betrayal sprung to her eyes. Lucy was her family, they were supposed to take care of each other.

"You need to add more sage for a cleansing ritual like this," she heard a male voice from her left say. Then she heard leaves rustling and she realised someone was preparing the ingredients for ritual involving her. Was she going to be some sort of sacrifice? She felt her stomach lurch in panic.

"I know you don't understand this cuz but I'm doing this for your own good. We know about the expression triangle and what you did to complete it."

"Lucy," she begged weakly. "Please - "

"Twelve witches Bonnie!" came her cousin's sharp response. "All dead because of you!"

"You don't understand - "

"No! It's you who doesn't understand! This kind of magic – It's pure evil! I know I'm doing the right thing. Shelia would have wanted me to take care of you." She looked directly down into Bonnie's eyes ignoring her tear stained cheeks. "She would have wanted me to cleanse your soul even if it meant you didn't come out alive."

Bonnie's eyes grew wider. "Lucy, no!" she cried. "Please!"

"We're ready," said a calm voice to her right. Lucy then stood up and moved to where Bonnie's head was and placed her hands on her younger cousin's temples. Bonnie then felt two sets of hands at her ankles.

"Don't do this!" she begged. "PLEASE!" she screamed in desperation.

She smelt the familiar scent of burning stage and Lucy and the other two witches began to chant.

The spell did not come upon her slowly, it hit her forcefully and she screamed in agony as she felt the sting of hot needles poking into the surface of her skin all over her body. A sound she didn't even realise she was capable of making escaped her lips, a deep guttural cry of pure pain.

To Elijah, who had tracked Bonnie's car to the forest, it sounded like an innocent animal being tortured in the most brutal of ways. He knew it was her and he sped as fast as his vampire abilities would take him to get to her.

Bonnie's vision was blurred so when Elijah arrived to save her she heard him swiftly knock out the three witches including her cousin, rather than saw him. The pain instantly stopped and she knew she was safe.

She felt him gather her gently in his arms as if she weighed no more than a feather. She looked up at him, blinking away her tears but not being able to see him.

"Miss Bennet?" he asked alarmed. Her face was streaked in tears and sweat and her body was limp.

"The bracelet, I- I can't move," she stuttered and then passed out.

The original vampire ripped the bracelet off her wrist and crushed it to dust in his palm.

Bonnie lay in the queen size bed of the hotel room Elijah had purchased for them. He had driven her car, with her laying in the backseat, as far away from Vermont as he could. They were now in a hotel in New Haven, Connecticut. She had woken up while he was driving, he had pulled over to check her vitals again. She had been breathing normally when she had first passed out but he was paranoid that the ritual the witches had done had caused some serious damage. She had mumbled that he had fulfilled his duty and then had fallen asleep.

When the sun had set he pulled into the closest hotel and compelled the staff to not to notice that he was carrying a sleeping girl. Once he had settled her into the bed he sat in an armchair nearby and watched her sleep. He decided that she was wrong and that his duty wasn't yet fulfilled and that it would be, only once he took her home and ensured that she was safe.

His musings were interrupted by a call from the woman he was…dating? He wasn't sure how to classify what Katerina was to him. He felt irritated by her call but he couldn't figure out why. He had never felt like that before when she had called. Nevertheless he told her where he was and she had appeared at the hotel room door a few hours later.

"You're following her around like a little lost puppy," snarled Katherine.

"Don't be ridiculous Katerina. I have told you, I owe her a life. It is nothing more than that."

Katherine watched as Elijah's eyes softened as he watched the witch's sleeping form.

"Then why can't you take your eyes of her?"

Elijah's eyes snapped back to Katherine. "Don't be jealous Katerina. I told you what happened. What they did to her. I am simply monitoring her breathing from here to make sure she is alright. Once I get her back to Mystic Falls she will no longer be my responsibility."

Katherine didn't believe him but she left not letting the original vampire know the extent of her anger. If Elijah had known, he would have realised that Bonnie Bennet was in danger - again.

"It's her or me Elijah. You have to choose." Katherine gave her ultimatum calmly as she held the knife to Bonnie's throat.
