Kurt's reaction to finding out about the shooting at McKinley.

Rachel comes rushing into the open living room to where Kurt and Adam sit together watching TV. Santana trails behind her, looking slightly concerned. Kurt ignores the girls when they sit on the small chair beside the couch and look expectantly at him. Rachel picks up the remote and mutes the TV. "Kurt." The muting of the television in pairing with the tone of the small girl's voice brings the boy to attention, "I have—there's been an incident at McKinley."

"What do you—"

"A shooting."

"Like...with a gun?" Kurt sits up straight, looking shocked. Adam looks between the two girls and Kurt. The British boy moves to put his arm around Kurt, the other boy ignores him.

"Yes."

"Blaine." This is not a question. Kurt's eyes look panicked.

"He's okay. He's shaken, but he's fine." Rachel watches as Adam removes his arm from around the brunette boy and closes in on himself. Rachel sighs, knowing that Blaine will always come first for the boy.

Kurt stands up, grabs his phone, and exits onto the fire exit; ignoring the voices behind him.

The phone only rings twice before it is picked up on the other side, "Kurt?"

"Blaine."

"Rachel must have told you then?" Blaine's voice sounds tired.

"Are you okay?" Kurt doesn't bother wish an answer to Blaine's question.

"I'm shaken, but I'm okay. The rest of Glee club and I were locked in the choir room while it happened. Sue did it, you know, by accident or something."

"She what?!" Kurt sits down on the metal stairs.

"Yeah, she was fired afterwards. I just...it's all so surreal. You never think that something like this could happen in your school. You live in blissful oblivion until it actually does happen." Kurt hears Blaine sniffle across the line. "The entire time I kept thinking 'I'm never going to get to see my family again, or talk to my brother, or tell you—" Blaine clears his throat.

"I know, Blaine. As soon as Rachel told me my mind went straight to you whether or not you were okay. She said you were, but I had to hear your voice. I had to know."

"I'm okay. I just—I never thought I was going to get to talk to you again. I was so tempted to text you, but I—I knew that I couldn't put you through that. I still love you, Kurt. Being in that situation made me realize that I don't want anything, or anyone but you."

Kurt smiles, "I love you too, Blaine. I miss you. I'm coming home in a few weeks for dad's appointment, can we have this discussion in person?"

"Yes, of course."

"I'm glad you're okay, Blaine. I don't know what I would have—" Kurt blocks that thought before it can manifest and consume him. It didn't happen Kurt thinks, "I love you, Blaine. I'll see you in a few weeks."

"I love you too, Kurt."

The boys bid each other fare well and hang up. The brunette sits on the fire escape for a few moments to collect his thoughts before going back inside to face his friends.

When he re-enters the apartment Kurt sits back down on the couch beside Adam, leaving a fair amount of space between them. Rachel notices and sighs, knowing something happened between Kurt and Blaine on the phone.

Maybe it's for the best.
